Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a nutritionally demanding crop, and phosphorus (P) is a nutrient that exerts a large effect on tuber yield. However, as the availability of P is influenced by soil texture, there are doubts about how P supplementation affects the growth and yield of potato plants in different soil textures. Thus, here we aimed to evaluate the effect of P fertilization and soil texture on the nutrition, growth, tuber yield, and P use efficiency (PUE) of potato plants. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions in a randomized block design with a 4×2 factorial scheme and five replications. The treatments were represented by four P rates (10, 50, 100, and 200 mg dm-3 P) and two soil textures (clayey and sandy). The concentrations of P, Ca, and Mg in the leaves were higher in sandy soil, and P rates increased the concentrations of N, P, and Ca in the leaves of potato plants. Phosphorus fertilization increased plant growth, the amount of P accumulated in the shoot, and tuber yield in both soils; this trend was stronger in the potato cultivated in the clayey soil than in the sandy soil. The applied-PUE was not affected by soil texture. In the potato cultivated in the sandy soil, the taken up-PUE was reduced due to the decrease in dry matter production and an increase in P concentration in the organs of the plant with higher P fertilizer rates.

Porém, como a disponibilidade de P é influenciada pela textura do solo, existem dúvidas de como o fornecimento de P afeta o crescimento e a produtividade das plantas de batata em solos de texturas diferentes. Assim, objetivou-se com esta pesquisa avaliar o efeito da adubação fosfatada e da textura do solo na nutrição, crescimento, produtividade e eficiência de uso (EU) do P das plantas de batata. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4×2, com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram representados por quatro doses de P (10, 50, 100 e 200 mg dm-3 P) e duas texturas de solo (argiloso e arenoso). Os teores foliares de P, Ca e Mg foram maiores no solo arenoso e as doses de P aumentaram os teores de N, P e Ca nas folhas. A adubação fosfatada aumentou o crescimento das plantas, a quantidade de P acumulada na parte aérea e a produtividade de tubérculos em ambos os solos, porém, de forma mais expressiva e até maiores doses na batata cultivada no solo argiloso. A EU do P aplicado não foi afetada pela textura do solo. Na batata cultivada no solo arenoso, a EU do P absorvido foi reduzida em função da diminuição na produção de MS e aumento nos teores de P nos órgãos da planta com fornecimento de altas doses de P.

The cultivation of irrigated guava in semi-arid areas highlights the need for information regarding its responses to irrigation water quality and the fertilization management that enables its exploitation. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of water salinity and nitrogen (N) doses on the growth and physiology of the guava cv. ‘Paluma’. The experiments was conducted in drainage lysimeters under field conditions in an experimental area at the Center of Sciences and Agri-Food Technology of the Federal University of Campina Grande (CCTA/UFCG), Campus II, in Pombal, PB, Brazil. The experiment had a randomized block design, and treatments consisted of a 5 x 4 factorial arrangement corresponding to five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity, ECw (0.3, 1.1, 1.9, 2.7, and 3.5 dS m-1), and four N doses (70, 100, 130, and 160% of the recommended N dose). The 100% dose corresponded to 541.1 mg of N dm-3 of soil. Increments in irrigation water salinity from 0.3 dS m-1 led to a reduction in stomatal conductance, internal CO2 concentration, CO2 assimilation rate, transpiration, instantaneous water use efficiency, the number of leaves and branches, stem diameter, and absolute and relative growth rates. Nitrogen doses ranging from 378.7 to 865.7 mg of N dm-3 of soil did not affect gas exchange and plant growth. Although ‘Paluma’ guava growth was affected by increases in water salinity, these plants can be irrigated using water of up to 1.42 dS m-1 with an acceptable reduction of 10% in growth variables. The interaction between irrigation water salinity and N fertilization had no significant effect on any of the variables studied.

Assim, objetivou-se estudar o efeito da salinidade da água combinada com doses de nitrogênio no crescimento e fisiologia da goiabeira cv. ‘Paluma’, em experimento conduzido em lisímetros de drenagem sob condições de campo em uma área experimental no Centro de Ciência e Tecnologia Agroalimentar da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (CCTA/UFCG), Campus II de Pombal, PB. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 5 x 4, relativos a cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,1; 1,9; 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1) e quatro doses de nitrogênio (70, 100, 130 e 160% de N recomendada), sendo a dose referente a 100% correspondeu a 541,1 mg de N dm-3 de solo. O aumento da salinidade da água de irrigação a partir de 0,3 dS m-1 promoveu redução na condutância estomática, concentração interna de CO2, taxa de assimilação de CO2, transpiração, eficiência instantânea no uso da água, número de folhas e ramos, diâmetro de caule, taxa de crescimento absoluto e relativo. Doses de nitrogênio variando de 378,7 a 865,7 mg de N dm-3 de solo não afetaram as trocas gasosas e o crescimento das plantas. Apesar do crescimento da goiabeira cv. Paluma ser afetado com o aumento da salinidade, é possível irrigar com água de até 1,42 dS m-1 ocorrendo redução aceitável de 10% nas variáveis de crescimento. Não houve efeito significativo da interação entre salinidade da água de irrigação e doses de adubação nitrogenada em nenhuma variável estudada.

Cowpea bean is a socioeconomically important legume that contribute to generate employment and income. This species presents great grain variability, and the commercial subclass black eye stands out as a very appreciated grain in Brazil and abroad, thus requiring the development of new cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate and select lineages of commercial black eye cowpea, based on simultaneous, and direct selection. First, 105 progenies and four controls were evaluated using the Federer's augmented block design. Seventy-seven progenies, selected from this evaluation-first selection cycle-and four controls were evaluated in three environments, using a simple 9×9 lattice design. Based on this evaluation, the second selection cycle was possible, resulting in 24 progenies. The gain by direct selection was lower than the predicted gain for grain yield in the first cycle, indicating that the selection was not effective. This result was probably due to the reduced genetic variability caused by the selection pressure. In the second cycle, the predicted and observed gains were similar, indicating that much of the expected gain was observed. The predicted and observed gains, with simultaneous selection based on the rank sum selection index, were similar in the first and second cycle. The simultaneous and direct selections resulted in genetic gains for grain yield in the two selection cycles, making it possible the selection of high grain yield lineages.

É uma espécie que apresenta grande variabilidade para o tipo de grão, sendo a subclasse comercial fradinho a que se destaca por ser um grão muito apreciado no Brasil e no exterior, demandando o desenvolvimento de novas cultivares. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar e selecionar linhagens de feijão-caupi tipo comercial fradinho, baseada na seleção simultânea e seleção direta. Inicialmente foram avaliadas 105 progênies e quatro testemunhas, utilizando o delineamento Blocos Aumentados de Federer. A partir desta avaliação foram selecionadas 77 progênies (primeiro ciclo de seleção), e quatro testemunhas que foram avaliadas em três ambientes, utilizando o delineamento látice simples 9x9. Fundamentado nessa avaliação, foi possível realizar o segundo ciclo de seleção, resultando em 24 progênies. Pela seleção direta, o ganho realizado foi inferior ao ganho predito para produtividade no primeiro ciclo, indicando que a seleção não foi efetiva, provavelmente devido à redução da variabilidade genética ocasionada pela pressão de seleção. No segundo ciclo, os ganhos realizado e predito foram bem próximos, indicando que grande parte do ganho esperado foi concretizado. Para os ganhos com a seleção simultânea baseados no Índice de Soma de Ranks, os valores de ganho predito e realizado foram semelhantes no primeiro e segundo ciclo. As seleções, simultânea e direta, possibilitaram a obtenção de ganhos genéticos para produtividade nos dois ciclos de seleção, possibilitando a seleção de linhagens de alta produtividade.

For climacteric fruits, such as mango, losses have been reported from harvest to fruit consumption. Thus, controlled refrigeration and passive modified atmosphere have been used in combination with edible and biodegradable coatings or plastic packaging to minimise these losses. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of carnauba wax and Xtend plastic packaging film, with and without refrigerated storage, on the post-harvest preservation of 'Tommy Atkins' mangoes. The fruits were coated with carnauba wax and/or wrapped in Xtend bags and then stored at 12 ± 1 and 25 ± 3 °C for 21 days. The weight loss, fruit firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, vitamin C content, and the CO2 concentration inside the package were determined at 7-day intervals. Cold storage was observed to slow down the rate of degradation and to reduce adverse degradation reactions. By coating the fruits with carnauba wax, packaging them with Xtend plastic and keeping them under refrigeration, it was possible to store the mangoes at 12 ± 1 °C for 21 days. In this way, the CO2 concentration was reduced, mass loss and acidity were decreased, and the fruit firmness was preserved.

RESUMO Em frutos climatéricos, como é o caso da manga, as perdas vão da colheita ao consumo. Tendo como controle a refrigeração e a modificação da atmosfera passivamente, com emprego de revestimentos comestíveis e biodegradáveis ou o acondicionamento em filmes plásticos. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência da cera de carnaúba e embalagem de filme plástico Xtend, utilizando ou não refrigeração na conservação pós-colheita de manga ‘Tommy Atkins’. Os frutos foram revestidos com solução de cera de carnaúba e/ou acondicionados nas embalagens Xtend e armazenados nas temperaturas de 25 ± 3 ºC e 12 ± 1 ºC, por 21 dias. A cada sete dias foram realizadas avaliações quanto à perda de massa, firmeza do fruto, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez total titulável e vitamina C dos frutos e concentração de CO2 nas embalagens. Verificou-se que o armazenamento refrigerado retardou a velocidade das reações de degradação, auxiliando na conservação de mangas ‘Tommy Atkins’. O revestimento dos frutos com cera de carnaúba e embalagem Xtend, sob refrigeração, possibilitou o seu armazenamento por 21 dias a 12 ± 1 ºC, reduzindo a concentração de CO2, a perda de massa e a diminuição da acidez dos frutos e preservando a firmeza. | ABSTRACT For climacteric fruits, such as mango, losses have been reported from harvest to fruit consumption. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the relative effects of controlled atmosphere (CA) associated with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP; 1.0 μL L−1), induction of mass loss (IML; 2%), and low ethylene (LE; <0.04 μL L−1 of C2H4) on the quality preservation of ‘Laetitia’ plums. In experiment 1 (2010), the treatments evaluated were cold storage (CS; 21.0 kPa O2 + <0.03 kPa CO2), CA1 (1 kPa O2 + 1 kPa CO2), CA1 + 1-MCP, CA1 + IML, and CA1 + LE. In experiment 2 (2011), the treatments evaluated were CS, CA2 (2 kPa O2 + 2 kPa CO2), CA2 + IML, and CA2 + 1-MCP. In both experiments, the fruit were stored at 0.5 ± 0.1°C and 96 ± 2% RH. CA storage delayed fruit ripening in both atmosphere conditions evaluated and reduced the internal browning of the ‘Laetitia’ plums, particularly in CA2. 1-MCP, LE, and IML had additional effects to CA1 on preserving flesh consistency. 1-MCP, irrespective of the CA condition, and IML, in CA1, reduced internal browning. CA1, regardless of the complementary technologies, reduced the incidence of decay and fruit cracking.

CA1, regardless of the complementary technologies, reduced the incidence of decay and fruit cracking. | RESUMO Foram conduzidos dois experimentos com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da atmosfera controlada (AC) associada ao 1-metilciclopropeno (1-MCP; 1,0 μL L-1), à indução de perda de massa (IPM; 2%) e ao baixo etileno (BE; <0,04 μL L-1 de C2H4) sobre a manutenção da qualidade de ameixas ‘Laetitia’. No experimento 1, em 2010, os tratamentos avaliados foram armazenamento refrigerado (AR; 21 kPa O2 + <0,03 kPa CO2), AC1 (1 kPa O2 + 1 kPa CO2), AC1+1-MCP, AC1+IPM e AC1+BE. No experimento 2, em 2011, os tratamentos foram AR, AC2 (2 kPa O2 + 2 kPa CO2), AC2+1-MCP e AC2+IPM. Em ambos os experimentos, os frutos foram armazenados a 0,5±0,1 ºC e 96±2% de umidade relativa. A AC retardou o amadurecimento, em ambas as atmosferas avaliadas, e reduziu o escurecimento de polpa de ameixas ‘Laetitia’, especialmente na AC2. O 1-MCP, o BE e a IPM apresentaram efeito adicional à AC1 na manutenção da consistência da polpa. O 1-MCP, independente da condição de AC, e a IPM, na condição de AC1, reduziram o escurecimento da polpa. A AC1, independente do uso de tecnologias complementares, reduziu a incidência de podridões e de rachaduras.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytomorphological parameters of soybean in a crop-livestock system inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense. The experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, Brazil, for two agricultural years (2 Paper extracted from the doctoral thesis of the first author. 012/2013 and 2013/2014) in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In the winter, the black oat and ryegrass pasture was managed with sheep under different grazing systems: (I) - a conventional grazing (CG) system, where the animals remained in the pasture throughout the experimental period without any pasture height control; (II, III, and IV) - systems with post-grazing pasture heights of 10, 20, and 30 cm, respectively; and (NG) - one control without grazing. All treatments received two nitrogen doses (50 and 100 kg ha-1) and inoculation or no inoculation (A. brasilense). The soybean cultivar BMX Potência RR was sown using no-tillage on 16 November 2012 and 1 December 2013. In each plot, seven rows of plants with spacing of 0.45 m were used, and in four rows, the seeds were inoculated with the bacterium A. brasilense. The phytomorphological variables and grain productivity were evaluated. In a croplivestock system, soybean has better productivity when established on black oat and ryegrass pasture managed with post-grazing pasture heights of between 20 and 30 cm. Areas under conventional grazing in the winter led to smaller soybean plants with lower first and last pod heights. Inoculation with A. brasilense should not be used alone in soybean cultivation.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os parâmetros fitomorfológicos da cultura da soja em um sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária e inoculados com Azospirillum brasilense. O experimento foi conduzido em Santa Maria, em dois agrícolas (2012/2013 e 2013/2014), num delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com três repetições. No período de inverno a pastagem de aveia preta e azevém foi manejada com ovinos em diferentes sistemas de pastejo: (I) - pastejo convencional (PC), onde os animais permaneciam na pastagem por todo o período experimental sem um controle da altura da pastagem, (II,III e IV) - altura da pastagem na saída dos animais de 10, 20 e 30 cm e uma testemunha sem pastejo (SP), três doses de nitrogênio (0, 50 e 100 kg ha-1) e com ou sem inoculação (Azospirillum brasilense). A semeadura da soja foi realizada em semeadura direta em 16 de novembro de 2012 e 01 de dezembro de 2013, utilizando-se a cultivar BMX Potência RR. Em cada parcela, se utilizou sete fileiras de plantas com espaçamento de 0,45 m, sendo que em quatro fileiras as sementes foram inoculadas com a bactéria Azospirillum brasilense. Foram avaliadas variáveis fitomorfológicas e a produtividade de grãos. Em sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária a cultura da soja possui melhores produtividades quando estabelecida sobre pastagem de aveia preta e azevém manejadas com alturas de pastejo entre 20 e 30 cm. As áreas sob pastejo convencional no inverno proporcionam plantas de soja menores, com menores inserções de primeira e última vagem. Irrigation with brackish water is common in the semiarid region of the Brazilian Northeast, potentiating the process of salinization of the soil in these areas. The hydroponic system stands out as an important strategy for crop management in semiarid regions, since crops show greater tolerance to the salt stress under hydroponic conditions, which minimize the effects of soil salinization. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of salt stress on the growth, fruit yield and mineral nutrition of sweet pepper in hydroponic system, using brackish water and coconut fiber substrate. The experiment was conducted in Recife, State of Pernambuco, Brazil (8°3'15''S, 34°52'53''W). A randomized block experimental design in a 5x2 factorial arrangement with five replications was used, consisting of five water salinity levels of the nutrient solution (2.0; 3.5; 4.5; 5.5 and 6.5 dS m-1) and two sweet pepper cultivars (Bruno and Rubia). The increasing salinity level of the nutrient solution decreased the fruit yield of the cultivars evaluated, reduced the potassium, phosphorus and sulfur, and increased the sodium and chlorine contents in the leaf tissues. The Ca contents of the cultivar Bruno decreased with increasing salinity, and increased in the cultivar Rubia. The cultivar Rubia stood out with the highest fruit yield and ionic selectivity, accumulating high amounts of potassium and calcium and maintaining low Na and Cl contents. The fruit yield of the cultivar Rubia (39.9 t ha-1) grown under solution with electrical conductivity of up to 3.5 dS m-1, denotes the potential viability of growing this cultivar under hydroponic conditions.

Nitisols are livelihood sources of agricultural and socio-economic development in several underdeveloped countries worldwide, including Brazil. Brazilian Nitisols are usually associated with basaltic rocks found in the Southern and Southeastern regions of the country. However, Nitisols derived from basalt also occur on the southern coast of Pernambuco state, a region under full urban, agricultural, and industrial development. Aiming to understand the relationship between climate and attributes of Nitisols from the southern coast of Pernambuco, we performed morphological descriptions, physical and chemical analyzes, iron selective extraction, and soil mineralogy (sand, silt, and clay) for three basaltic soil profiles along a land slope. The results suggest a strong weathering of the profiles due to climate conditions, besides a great loss of basic cations and xanthization process, resulting in the natural genesis of acric Nitisols with yellowish coloration, which has not been yet cataloged for this soil order in the Brazilian taxonomic system. In addition, there is a variation for physical attributes of Nitisols along the slope.

Os Nitossolos brasileiros estão geralmente associados às rochas basálticas das regiões Sul e Sudeste. Entretanto, Nitossolos derivado de basalto também ocorrem na costa sul de Pernambuco, uma região em pleno desenvolvimento urbano, agrícola e industrial. Objetivando compreender as relações entre o clima e os atributos dos Nitossolos da costa sul de Pernambuco, foram realizadas descrições morfológicas, análises físicas e químicas, extrações seletivas de ferro e a determinação da mineralogia das frações areia, silte e argila de três perfis derivados de basalto ao longo de uma vertente. Os resultados demonstram que o clima da região implica em forte intemperização dos perfis, em grande perda de bases e favorece o processo de xantização, resultando na singular gênese de Nitossolos com matizes amarelados e caráter ácrico, fato que até o momento ainda não foi catalogado para esta ordem no sistema taxonômico brasileiro. Os resultados também demonstram a variação dos atributos físicos dos Nitossolos ao longo da vertente.

The production of vegetables in communities of family farmers in semiarid regions is limited due to rudimentary cultivation practices and systems, water scarcity, and excess salts in the water and soil. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the production of rocket (Eruca sativa L. cv. Folha Larga) in a low cost hydroponic system, considering strategies for the use of brackish water in the nutrient solution. The experiments were conducted in complete randomized designs, in 6×2 factorial arrangements, with five replications, using rocket plants grown in different nutrient solutions, consisting of six salinity levels (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5, and 9.0 dS m -1) and two circulation frequencies of the nutrient solution (twice a day, at 8:00h, and 16:00h; and three times a day, at 8:00h, 12:00h, and 16:00h). In Experiment I, the nutrient solution lost by evapotranspiration was replenished with the respective brackish water used in its preparation; and in Experiment II it was replenished with public water (0.12 dS m -1). The shoot and root fresh and dry biomass of the plants and their respective dry weight proportions, and biometric variables were evaluated. Replenishing of the nutrient solution with public water resulted in lower losses in biomass and plant growth. The increases in circulation frequency of the nutrient solution did not affect the biometric variables, however, the plants prioritized shoot biomass development to the detriment of the root when using high circulation frequencies.

Neste sentido, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar a produção de rúcula, cv. Folha larga, em sistema de hidroponia de baixo custo, adotando-se estratégias de uso da água salina no preparo e reposição da solução nutritiva evapotranspirada. Em dois experimentos, plantas de rúcula foram expostas a seis níveis de salinidade da solução nutritiva (1,5; 3,0; 4,5; 6,0; 7,5 e 9,0 dS m -1) aplicadas em duas frequências de circulação (duas vezes ao dia - às 8 e 16 horas; três vezes ao dia - às 8, 12 e 16 horas). O delineamento experimental adotado foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 6 x 2, com cinco repetições, sendo que, no Experimento I a reposição da solução nutritiva foi efetuada com a respectiva água salina utilizada no preparo da solução e, no Experimento II, com água de abastecimento (0,12 dS m -1). Analisou-se a fitomassa fresca e seca da planta, da parte aérea e da raiz, bem como as respectivas partições de matéria seca e variáveis biométricas. A reposição da lâmina evapotranspirada com água de abastecimento resultou em menores perdas de biomassa e no crescimento das plantas e que, o aumento da frequência de circulação não influenciou as variáveis biométricas, no entanto, sob maior frequência de circulação a planta priorizou o desenvolvimento da biomassa da parte aérea em detrimento da raiz.

This study aimed to establish an adequate tetrazolium test procedure to estimate okra seed viability. Initially, seeds from four okra lots were immersed in alcohol (98%) for 60 minutes, followed by an 18-h soak in distilled water at 25 °C. Then, the seeds were longitudinally sectioned, immersed in 0.025, 0.050 and 0.075% tetrazolium solutions for 60, 90 and 120 minutes and maintained in an oven at 35 and 40 °C. Subsequently, the seeds were evaluated for viability, based on tissue color (bright red, pink or dark Carmine red). Simultaneously, a germination test was conducted, and its results were used as a reference for the tetrazolium test. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 3 x 3 + 1 factorial scheme (three concentrations of tetrazolium salt x three immersion periods, plus the control) in four replicates of 50 seeds for each treatment. The tetrazolium test to estimate okra seed viability should be conducted in 0.075% tetrazolium solution, for 90 minutes, at 35 °C.

RESUMO Objetivou-se estabelecer o procedimento adequado do teste de tetrazólio para estimar a viabilidade em sementes de quiabo. Inicialmente, as sementes de quatro lotes de quiabo foram imersas em álcool (98%) por 60 minutos e seguida de 18 horas de embebição em água destilada a 25 ºC. Após este período, as sementes foram seccionadas longitudinalmente, imersas em soluções de tetrazólio de 0,025; 0,050 e 0,075% por 60, 90 e 120 minutos e mantidas em estufa a 35 e 40 °C. Posteriormente, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto à viabilidade, tendo como indicação a coloração dos tecidos (vermelho brilhante rosa ou vermelho carmim forte). Paralelamente, foi instalado o teste de germinação, cujos resultados serviram como referência para o teste de tetrazólio. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualisado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1, (três concentrações do sal de tetrazólio x três períodos de imersão e a testemunha) em quatro repetições de 50 sementes para cada tratamento.
