Reclaimed water and food production: Cautionary tales from consumer research Полный текст

Reclaimed water has been identified as a viable and cost-effective solution to water shortages impacting agricultural production. However, lack of consumer acceptance for foods irrigated with reclaimed and treated water remains one of the greatest hurdles for widespread farm-level adoption. Using survey data from 760 participants in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., this paper examines consumer preferences for six sources of reclaimed irrigation water and identifies statistically significant relationships between consumers’ demographic characteristics and their preferences for each type of reclaimed water. Key findings suggest that adult consumers prefer rain water to all other sources of reclaimed water. Women are less likely than men to prefer reclaimed irrigation water sources and are particularly concerned about the use of black and brackish water. Consumers who had heard about reclaimed water before are more likely to accept its use. Drawing on evidence from survey and experimental research, this paper also identifies disgust, neophobia and safety concerns as the key issues that lead consumers to accept or reject foods produced with reclaimed water. Finally, we identify avenues for future research into public acceptance of reclaimed water based on our analysis and evidence from prior research.

OBJECTIVE: High water consumption has been proposed as an aid to weight control and as a means of reducing the energy density of the diet. This study examines the relationship between water consumption and other drinking and eating patterns. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999 to 2001, with responses from 4755 individuals [>/=]18 years of age, provides the data for this cross-sectional analysis. A cluster analysis was performed using z-scores of specific food and beverage consumption to examine patterns. A multinomial logit analysis was used to examine sociodemographic characteristics of each dietary pattern and to examine the effects of water consumption on the likelihood of consuming a non-dairy caloric beverage. All results were weighted to be nationally representative and controlled for design effects. RESULTS: Within the sample, 87% consumed water, with an average daily consumption of 51.9 oz (1.53 liters) per consumer. Water consumers drank fewer soft/fruit drinks and consumed 194 fewer calories per day. Water consumers (potentially a self-selected sample) consumed more fruits, vegetables, and low- and medium-fat dairy products. Four distinct unhealthy dietary patterns were found that included little or no water consumption. Older and more educated persons used healthier food patterns. Mexican dietary patterns were much healthier than dietary patterns of blacks. DISCUSSION: Water consumption potentially is a dietary component to be promoted, but much more must be understood about its role in a healthy diet. Because high water consumption is linked with healthier eating patterns--patterns more likely to be followed by higher-educated, older adults--the target of water promotion and healthy diet options should focus on younger and less educated adults.

Food and water consumption by adult female German cockroaches has been examined in relation to the reproductive cycle. Daily consumption was recorded for individual insects and was related to certain landmark events in each of four egg-case production cycles. It was shown that peaks of feeding and drinking occur during the egg maturation period, but are abruptly terminated at the appearance of each egg case. During the period when females carry the egg case, they feed and drink sparingly. The possible role played by feeding and especially drinking in the regulation of reproduction in this important pest species is discussed.

The increasing costs of energy and water, fossil fuel depletion, and food shortages caused by climate change challenge long-term sustainability of food, energy, and water (FEW) systems. In working toward sustainable development, a fundamental question for deciding on whether and how to invest in FEW systems is “how sustainable FEW systems are?”. In order to measure sustainability across the FEW systems, an integrated sustainability index (SI) is developed. The SI is comprised of three components; food, energy, and water. These components each consist of different sub-components (e.g. transportation fuel for energy component) that make up integrated FEW systems. The sustainability of an FEW system can be calculated using the integrated FEW SI, but a more thought provoking question is to understand how each sub-component affects overall sustainability of the system. This cannot be achieved without formulating the interconnections associated with FEW components. This study formulates interconnections associated with FEW components. In an effort to increase the degree to which the results would generalize to FEW systems with different scales, the calculations of the study are performed for a sustainable FEW system that can consistently yield food for a family of four (two adults and two children) and supply its own water and energy needs from sustainable sources. Also, the sustainability is measured for two systems located in two different climates; one is relatively cloudy and humid and the other is sunny and arid. The results show that the highest sustainability improvement in both climates is associated with irrigation sub-component. Not only a sustainable water supply for irrigation sub-component improves the sustainability of water component, it also improves food sustainability and consequently energy sustainability. This finding can be explained by the fact that the irrigation sub-component is a resource supplier for grain sub-component, and that is a resource supplier for transportation fuel sub-component.

Food selection by adult red foxes Vulpes vulpes was studied in a mountainous environment characterised by fluctuating populations of water voles. According to optimal foraging theory, the diets of adults and cubs should be similar during vole highs, with voles as staple prey. On the other hand, a difference should occur when water voles become scarce. Adults should then bring larger alternative prey to their cubs, and consume smaller prey at the capture site. Adult and cub scats were collected around breeding dens during a 6‐year period, from the peak to a near‐extinction phase of the water vole population, and analysed. As predicted by the optimal foraging theory, no significant difference was found between the diets of cubs and adults when voles were abundant. Furthermore, cubs consumed a higher proportion of large alternative prey, i.e. lagomorphs, than adults in the first year of low vole density. Unexpectedly, this difference did not persist the following years despite the water vole scarcity. The consumption of large alternative prey at the den decreased significantly, whereas the consumption of small alternative prey, i.e. invertebrates, increased. Consequently, the composition of prey brought to the den was similar to that consumed at the capture site. Food selection was probably affected by the unpredictability of large prey availability and accessibility. It is suggested that if small alternative prey proves less profitable to the cubs than large prey, a long‐lasting shortage of water voles could possibly become a factor regulating fox numbers in the area studied.

We manipulated the amount of food and water (soil moisture) available to natural populations of larval tiger beetles in Arizona. Supplemental food increased survivorship of first instars to the second instar in all species in at least one of two years. Supplemental soil moisture usually increased, but sometimes decreased, survival of first instars. Interaction of food and water treatments was significant in a few cases, but the nature of the interaction varied greatly among species and years. Significant mortality of first instars from natural enemies occurred, and may explain the anomalous cases of first—instar survival with food exclusion (since enemies were also excluded by this treatment). Food supplementation increased first—instar—to—adult survivorship for all species and third—instar—to—adult survivorship for most species; in contrast, water supplementation had no effect on most species. Food manipulation, but not water manipulation, also affected development time or size of adults (usually both) for all seven species tested. Supplemental food produced larger adults and resulted in more rapid maturation. Reduced food resulted in delayed development, and this usually resulted in death. The results of this study provide one of the few cases in which simultaneous effects of two major ecological factors have been analyzed for a large set of similar species in an array of habitats. The prevalence of food limitation and the frequent lack of a detectable consistent interaction between food availability and water availability in this system indicate that food limitation and resource competition may be the dominant factors controlling these organisms.

PURPOSE: Consuming 375–500 ml of water 30 min before a meal has been shown to reduce energy intake in older, but not younger adults. This study investigated the effects of ingesting a water preload immediately pre-meal (<1 min before eating) on within-meal ad libitum energy intake in non-obese young males. METHODS: Fourteen healthy males [mean (SD) age 27 (3) years, height 1.83 (0.05) m, body weight 80.47 (9.89) kg, body fat 17.5 (4.0) %, body mass index 24.0 (2.5) kg/m²] completed a familiarisation trial and two experimental trials in randomised counterbalanced order. Subjects arrived at the laboratory overnight fasted and consumed an ad libitum porridge breakfast. Immediately prior to the meal, subjects consumed either a 568 ml (1 pint) water preload (preload trial) or no preload (control trial). Visual analogue scale questionnaires to assess hunger, fullness and satisfaction were completed before and after the meal in both trials, as well as after the water preload. RESULTS: Ad libitum energy intake was greater (P < 0.001) during control [2551 (562) kJ] than preload [1967 (454) kJ]. Ad libitum water intake was also greater (P < 0.001) during control [318 (226–975) ml] than preload [116 (0–581) ml]. The water preload increased fullness and satisfaction and decreased hunger compared to pre-trial (P < 0.001) and the control trial (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that consumption of a 568 ml water preload immediately before a meal reduces energy intake in non-obese young males. This might therefore be an effective strategy to suppress energy intake in this population and possibly assist with weight management.

Plant water stress can affect selectivity by insect herbivores. Numerous studies have shown greater insect preference for water-stressed plants, but others have reported the opposite response. We evaluated leaf consumption by adults of Nyctelia circumundata (a chewing insect) in leaves of Larrea divaricata and Prosopis alpataco. Three bioassays (two-way choice tests) were performed: two intra-specific comparisons between well-watered (+W) and water-stressed (−W) leaves of each species and one inter-specific comparison between leaves of the two species. Leaf biomass was reduced by water stress in both species. Nitrogen concentration in leaves (N) was reduced by drought in P. alpataco. In contrast, total phenolics and specific leaf area (SLA) did not differ between treatments within species. Nyctelia circumundata did not show preference by any water supply regimes in intra-specific comparisons. In contrast, in inter-specific choice tests, it showed a marked preference for P. alpataco, which is the species with the highest nitrogen concentration and lowest total phenolics concentration. In intra-specific comparisons, maximum leaf consumption was inversely related to SLA in both species. Furthermore, in P. alpataco, N concentration was positively related to maximum leaf consumption and negatively related to leaf water content (LWC). In contrast, in inter-specific comparisons, total phenolics was negatively related to maximum leaf consumption, while N concentration exhibited the opposite trend. These results suggest that food selection is a hierarchical process where chemical attributes (i.e., total phenolics and N) are taken into account for species selection, and physical attributes (i.e., SLA and LWC) for choosing individuals inside species.

The sterile insect technique is used to manage or control fruit flies throughout the world. The technique relies on large scale production before delivery to release managers. As part of the mass production phase, there are many quality control tests to demonstrate and maintain high quality pupae and flies. One highly desirable characteristic is adults with a long life so that these adults can reach sexual maturity and sterile males mate with wild fertile flies in the field and thus produce no viable offspring. Originally longevity was assessed allowing adults to have unlimited access to food and water. As quality and longevity increased, this methodology added significantly to workload and space demands and many facilities moved to testing longevity under stress where no food or water was provided. Here we examined >27,000 Queensland fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) from 160 weekly production batches from July 2004 to October 2009 where flies were not provided food or water. The mean longevity was 54.4 ± SE hours. Longevity was significantly shorter from August to March, and the longevity was significantly longer in June. Longevity was not related to pupal weight, contrary to expectations. Weights were significantly lower in June and highest in summer.

Twenty-four adult Beagles were utilised to evaluate the partial replacement of wheat bran with corn gluten feed without steep water on digestibility and characteristics of faeces. The treatments were 0 (no substitution), 30, 60 or 90 g/kg of corn gluten without steep water. There was no effect (p > .05) on the digestibility coefficients (g/kg) of dry matter (0.771), organic matter (0.806), crude protein (0.813), ether extract (0.798), crude fibre (0.393), neutral detergent fibre (0.425), acid detergent fibre (0.286) and crude energy (0.812), whilst there was effect (p < .05) on the digestible and metabolisable energy. There were effects (p < .05) for dry matter and pH of faeces but no effect (p > .05) was found on the remaining faecal characteristics: excretion for 100 g of food (56.77 g), excretion (129.6 g/day and 49.0 g dry matter/day), score (3.90), dry matter excretion for 100 g of food (22.86 g), buffering capacity (BC) at pH 5 (57.81), ammonia nitrogen (1.46 g/kg of faecal dry matter) and water balance (333.25 mL/day), in vivo and in situ gas production (p > .05). Corn gluten feed without steep water can be utilised to replace up to 90 g/kg of wheat bran without causing negative effect on the digestibility and characteristics of faeces.
