Regulatory issues regarding the use of food and water restriction in laboratory animals Полный текст

While investigating certain aspects of animal physiology, neurology or behavior, research scientists sometimes must limit the amount of food or water provided to animals used in a study. Such limitations can negatively impact the health and welfare of laboratory animals by, for example, causing them to experience distress or pain. The author discusses the veterinary and regulatory concerns that laboratory personnel should consider when limiting food or water given to research animals. He concludes that by adequately addressing the needs of animals receiving less food or water than required by regulation, researchers will improve both animal care and scientific study results.

As the most populous country over the world, China has great pressure on food and resources security. In this study, we set the national economy of China as a whole system, and apply supply chains analysis based on the input-output structures, to identify the food-water linkage, food-energy linkage, and the energy-water linkage in the system. The results show that agriculture and animal husbandry contribute most use of resource in supply chains. Animal husbandry sector, agriculture, slaughtering and processing of meat contribute large amount of embodied water consumption. While agriculture, other food sector and animal husbandry sector consumes most embodied primary energy, although the direct primary energy use by animal husbandry sector is not significant. Meanwhile, by importing or exporting resources, international trade impacts on the resources flow through input-output structures. When making polices, the interactions of various resources and international trade should be considered by applying food energy water nexus (FEWN) approach.

A new electrochemical adsorptive stripping voltammetry method was developed for the determination of trace amounts of copper in food and water samples. The study of electrochemical behavior of Cu ion indicated that Cu(II) and Schiff base formed a complex in H3BO4-NaOH buffer solution (pH = 7.25). An accumulation potential of -100 mV (vs Ag/AgCl) was applied while the solution was stirred for 60 s. The response curve was recorded by scanning the potential, and the peak current of -0.31 V (vs Ag/AgCl) was recorded. The peak current and concentration of copper accorded with linear relationship in the range of 0.04-120 ng mL(-1). The relative standard deviation (for 12 ng mL(-1) of copper) was 1.73 %, and the detection limit was 0.007 ng mL(-1). The possible interference of some common ions was studied. The proposed method was applied to the determination of copper in water, rice, wheat, tea, milk, and tomato with satisfactory results.

This study uses Taiwan's WEF nexus as a case study to demonstrate how the resource flow and associated environmental impact of the WEF nexus can be assessed as basis for evaluating strategies for promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. In this study, material flow analysis (MFA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA), were combined. The MFA was used to examine the interdependence of the three natural resources, and the LCA was used to evaluate the environmental impacts of the WEF system. The WEF nexus analysis shows that tap water supply, oil refining, the cogeneration of steam and electricity, thermoelectric power plants, irrigation, animal husbandry, and aquaculture are the main interwoven nodes and have the most prominent impact on the three natural resources. When the unit products from the WEF system were determined, LCA was implemented for these products to identify 15 types of environmental impacts. The environmental impacts for the WEF system were then calculated based on the use of unit products. The results of LCA showed that the most prominent impacts are the impact of public electricity on climate change; oil products on ozone depletion and ionizing radiation; tap water on metal depletion; and animal husbandry on terrestrial ecotoxicity. Based on the assessment of the alternative resource management strategies, if both water and energy policies are modified simultaneously, the impact of the overall WEF system on most environmental impact categories could be reduced.
