Food-deprivation, compensatory growth and hydro-mineral balance in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) post-smolts in sea water Полный текст

Groups of 0+ Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts were transferred to duplicate seawater tanks, and subjected to five different ration levels, 0% (starved), 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% (full fed). Waste feed was collected after each meal. After six weeks all groups were re-fed in excess. During the trial period body weight and length increased significantly in the 50, 75 and 100% groups, while no significant changes in body weight were observed in the 0% and 25% groups. A significant decrease in SGR was observed in the 0 and 25% groups during the first month in sea water. After re-feeding, SGR increased in all groups. All groups, except the previously starved group, showed peak SGR between weeks 6-8 and 8-12. Food restriction at 0% and 25% of full ration for a period of six weeks resulted in significant osmotic disturbances. After six weeks in sea water, plasma Cl⁻ levels were higher in the 0% group than in the other groups. Branchial Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase activity increased in all groups following exposure to seawater. Re-feeding caused a transient increase in branchial Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase activity after two weeks in the previously starved group, with a concurrent reduction in plasma Cl⁻ levels. Previous exposure to different ration levels significantly influenced growth rate and mean body size. Compensatory growth and partial size compensation was seen in the 0, 25 and 50% feed deprivation groups, whereas full size compensation was found in the 75% group.

Heavy metals and arsenic (As) are hazardous to the environment and human health. In concert with the problem of metallic contaminants, certain macrophytes in wetlands are harmful invasive alien plants (IAP). Nevertheless, there exists a knowledge gap, that whether all IAP are nuisance or possess certain beneficial role as bioresource in environmental amelioration. Present study conducted microcosm experiments to investigate the heavy metals and As phytoremediation potential of IAP (Phragmites karka (Retz.) Trin. ex Steud. and Arundo donax L.). The results revealed the significant but differential heavy metals remediation (31.0 to 73.3%; p ≤ 0.01) and anti-oxidative defence potential (in terms of enzymatic activity) of IAP. Highest translocation factor (TF-0.89) was noted in case of P. karaka for Zn. Rhizofiltration (TF < 1) was observed as main phytoremediation mechanism. In the present experimental design, P. karka was noted as better phytoremediation tool than A. donax. In future studies, phytoremediation potential of these IAP can be tested at field scale, in conjunction with ‘Water-energy food (W-E-F) nexus’ and ‘biorefinery’ co-benefits.

Evaluation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are of great importance for the clinical diagnosis of several serious diseases correlated with their variations in human blood serum. In this study, a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probe was innovatively fabricated for the evaluation of AChE activity and the determination of OPs in tap water and food on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) between nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). N-CDs were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method by using pancreatin and 1,2-ethanediamine as precursors. N-CDs showed excellent fluorescence properties and negligible cytotoxicity on human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells and human embryonic kidney 293T cells, suggesting their further biological applications. Upon the addition of AChE and choline oxidase, acetylcholine was catalyzed to produce choline that was further oxidized to produce H₂O₂. In the presence of horseradish peroxidase, o-phenylenediamine reacted with H₂O₂ to produce fluorescent DAP. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescent probing platform existed via IFE between N-CDs with a fluorescence signal at 450 nm and DAP with a fluorescence signal at 574 nm. OPs irreversibly impeded the catalytic activity of AChE, finally leading to the decrease of DAP amount and the variation of ratiometric fluorescent signal. Under optimal conditions, such a fluorescent probe showed relatively low detection limits of 0.38 U/L for AChE, 3.2 ppb for dichlorvos, and 13 ppb for methyl-parathion. Practical application of this ratiometric fluorescent probe to detect OPs was further verified in tap water and food samples with satisfying results that were highly consisted with the results obtained by GC–MS.

Effect of evaporative cooling of pregnant dairy cows under heat load conditions during the dry and close-up period, on mammary gland enzymatic activity and intake of food and water, BCS, and milk performance after calving were measured in two consequent experiments. In experiment 1, 18 dry cows held in tie-stalls in a closed aerated barn under heat load conditions were used to measure the effect of evaporative cooling on the respiratory rate and body temperature, individual intake of food and water, enzymes expression level in mammary gland and adipose tissues, and BCS changes until calving. In experiment 2, two groups of 36 dry cows each, held in a commercial loose housing barn, were used to measure the effects of evaporative cooling under heat load conditions on calves' birth weight, colostrum quality and quantity, BCS changes and milk yield during 90 DIM. The non cooled (NC) cows responded to heat load by increasing their respiratory rate and daily water intake, while elevating their rectal temperature by 0.2-0.3 °C as compared with the cooled (C) cows. The external relief of heat load by the C cows in both experiments was expressed in increasing their voluntary DMI during the dry period as compared with the NC group. In experiment 2 the calves' birth weight of C cows was higher, and their colostrum quality and quantity were improved as compared with the NC group. Cooling also improved significantly BCS gain during the last 21 days until parturition, accompanied with higher cell proliferation process (based on enzymes expression at mRNA level) in the mammary gland of the C cows. Consequently, a significant increase in milk production by 5.3%, protein yield by 5.1%, ECM yield by 4.2% and FCM yield by 4.5%, was demonstrated in the C cows during 90 DIM as compared with the NC group.
