Mealworms for Food: A Water Footprint Perspective Полный текст

In this paper, we have explored the possibility of substituting traditional meat products with an alternative source of protein (insects) in order to reduce human pressure on water. Insects, in fact, could represent a good alternative source of quality proteins and nutrients and they are already a very popular component of the diet of one third of the world’s population in approximately 80% of countries. In the study, we have taken into account only two species of edible insects (Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas morio mealworms), because they are already commercially produced even in Western countries, and for this reason it is possible to find specific data in literature about their diets. We have used the water footprint (WF) as a reliable indicator to calculate the volume of water required for production and to compare different products. The final aim of the work is, in fact, to evaluate the WF of the production of edible insects with a focus on water consumption associated with protein content, in order to make a comparison with other animal protein sources. We have demonstrated that, from a freshwater resource perspective, it is more efficient to obtain protein through mealworms rather than other traditional farmed animals.

Recent research has documented shifts in per capita trophic interactions and food webs in response to changes in environmental moisture, from the top-down (consumers to plants), rather than solely bottom-up (plants to consumers). These responses may be predictable from effects of physiological, behavioral, and ecological traits on animal water balance, although predictions could be modified by energy or nutrient requirements, the risk of predation, population-level responses, and bottom-up effects. Relatively little work has explicitly explored food web effects of changes in animal water balance, despite the likelihood of widespread relevance, including during periodic droughts in mesic locations, where taxa may lack adaptations for water conservation. More research is needed, particularly in light of climate change and hydrological alteration.

Food and water consumption during the reproductive cycle of female german cockroaches Полный текст

Food and water consumption by adult female German cockroaches has been examined in relation to the reproductive cycle. Daily consumption was recorded for individual insects and was related to certain landmark events in each of four egg-case production cycles. It was shown that peaks of feeding and drinking occur during the egg maturation period, but are abruptly terminated at the appearance of each egg case. During the period when females carry the egg case, they feed and drink sparingly. The possible role played by feeding and especially drinking in the regulation of reproduction in this important pest species is discussed.

Plant water stress can affect selectivity by insect herbivores. Numerous studies have shown greater insect preference for water-stressed plants, but others have reported the opposite response. We evaluated leaf consumption by adults of Nyctelia circumundata (a chewing insect) in leaves of Larrea divaricata and Prosopis alpataco. Three bioassays (two-way choice tests) were performed: two intra-specific comparisons between well-watered (+W) and water-stressed (−W) leaves of each species and one inter-specific comparison between leaves of the two species. Leaf biomass was reduced by water stress in both species. Nitrogen concentration in leaves (N) was reduced by drought in P. alpataco. In contrast, total phenolics and specific leaf area (SLA) did not differ between treatments within species. Nyctelia circumundata did not show preference by any water supply regimes in intra-specific comparisons. In contrast, in inter-specific choice tests, it showed a marked preference for P. alpataco, which is the species with the highest nitrogen concentration and lowest total phenolics concentration. In intra-specific comparisons, maximum leaf consumption was inversely related to SLA in both species. Furthermore, in P. alpataco, N concentration was positively related to maximum leaf consumption and negatively related to leaf water content (LWC). In contrast, in inter-specific comparisons, total phenolics was negatively related to maximum leaf consumption, while N concentration exhibited the opposite trend. These results suggest that food selection is a hierarchical process where chemical attributes (i.e., total phenolics and N) are taken into account for species selection, and physical attributes (i.e., SLA and LWC) for choosing individuals inside species.

Legumes, which include a great variety of seeds, are distinguished by their protein content. Legume seeds produce defensive compounds against fungi and insect predators, and these compounds can be extracted or isolated for antimicrobial use. Isolation and identification of legume proteins and peptides have been extensively studied as part of the search for antifungal compounds. Researchers have recently started to pay attention to the antimicrobial activities of legume proteins, lectins, and peptides; however, few overviews regarding their antifungal activity are available, particularly concerning food applications.This review summarizes the main legume proteins and peptides with antifungal activity and their principal antifungal mechanisms of action. Further, potential food applications of legume water extracts and legume crude protein extracts with antifungal activity are discussed.Most studies have focused on isolating and identifying proteins and peptides with antifungal activity. Antifungal mechanism of action has been established for legume defensins. In contrast, legume water extracts and legume crude protein extracts have been subjected to less investigation; however, these preparations have been explored for food applications, particularly in bread, with interesting results. Despite their antifungal activity, practical applications of legume proteins and peptides have yet to be found. This is due to their low yields, high costs, and poor safety regulatory status. Therefore, further research on legume water extracts is necessary before food applications can be broadly developed.

Restoration of degraded freshwater ecosystems has gained considerable attention in the USA over the past decades. However, most projects focus almost entirely on the restoration of physical habitat or specific water quality parameters, while ignoring critical ecological processes related to food web re-establishment. In this study, we investigate the impact of riparian habitat in different stages of restoration on food availability for fish in four streams in Pennsylvania, USA. The riparian buffer habitats ranged from open meadow to mature forest and included new to long-term restoration sites. We quantified abundance and community composition of aquatic macroinvertebrates and riparian arthropods with aerial and ground-dwelling life history strategies. We found that riparian habitat and water temperature exert a strong influence over potential food resources for fish, with the open meadow habitat having highest abundance of terrestrial and aquatic insects, lowest taxa richness, and possible multivoltine aquatic insect life-history. Our results provide insight into the importance of riparian buffer habitat and water temperature on the composition of food availability for fish species of concern such as brook trout. The significant differences emphasize the need to include food web dynamics into riparian habitat restoration design to guide future rehabilitation projects focusing on fish conservation.

Many environmental stressors naturally covary, and the frequency and duration of stressors such as heat waves and droughts are increasing globally with climate change. Multiple stressors may have additive or non-additive effects on fitness-related traits, such as locomotion, reproduction, and somatic growth. Despite its importance to terrestrial animals, water availability is rarely incorporated into multiple-stressor frameworks. Water limitation often occurs concurrently with food limitation (e.g., droughts can trigger famines), and the acquisition of water and food can be linked because water is necessary for digestion and metabolism. Thus, we investigated the independent and interactive effects of water and food limitation on life-history traits using female crickets (Gryllus firmus), which exhibit a wing dimorphism mediating a life-history trade-off between flight and fecundity. Our results indicate that traits vary in their sensitivities to environmental factors and factor–factor interactions. For example, neither environmental factor affected flight musculature, only water limitation affected survival, and food and water availability non-additively (i.e., interactively) influenced body and ovary mass. Water availability had a larger effect on traits than food availability, affected more traits than food availability, and mediated the effects of food availability. Further, life-history strategy influenced the costs of multiple stressors because females investing in flight capacity exhibited greater reductions in body and ovary mass during stress relative to females lacking flight capacity. Therefore, water is important in the multiple-stressor framework, and understanding the dynamics of covarying environmental factors and life history may be critical in the context of climate change characterized by concurrent environmental stressors.

The aim of this study was to investigate antifungal and insecticidal activity of two microencapsulated antioxidants: 2(3)-tert-butyl-4 hydroxyanisole (BHA) and 2,6-di(tert-butyl)-p-cresol (BHT) against Aspergillus section Flavi and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), a vector carrier of aflatoxigenic fungi on stored peanuts. Susceptibility of Aspergillus section Flavi, insects, and aflatoxin B1 accumulation in sterile peanut kernels conditioned at two different water activities (aw) (0.83 aw and 0.95 aw) was determined with different doses of antioxidant formulations (10, 20 and 30 mM) during 45 days. Moreover, Aspergillus section Flavi isolation frequency from live and dead insects was evaluated. The BHA formulation completely inhibited Aspergillus section Flavi development regardless of aw and doses assayed. Antifungal effect of microencapsulated BHT was highly dependent on aw, with 86–100% fungal inhibition at 20 and 30 mM, at the lowest aw (0.83 aw) and at the end of the experiment. No aflatoxin accumulation was detected in samples treated with the BHA formulation. In general, low levels of Aspergillus section Flavi were detected in dead insects. Our results show efficacy for 45 days, in addition microencapsulated BHT could be an alternative to control peanut pests in dry kernels.
