Many studies examine the correlation between the use of resources such as water, energy and land, and the production of food. These nexus studies focus predominantly on large scale systems, often considering the social dimensions only in terms of access to resources and participation in the decision-making process, rather than individual attitudes and behaviours with respect to resource use. Such a concept of the nexus is relevant to urban agriculture (UA), but it requires customisation to the particular characteristics of growing food in cities, which is practiced mainly at a small scale and produces not only food but also considerable social, economic, and environmental co-benefits. To this end, this paper proposes a new conceptual basis for a UA Nexus, together with an assessment methodology that explicitly includes social dimensions in addition to food, energy and water. The conceptual basis introduces People, together with Food, Energy and Water, as a fundamental factor of the UA Nexus. On this basis, a methodology is developed measuring not only resource efficiency and food production but also motivations and health benefits. It comprises a combination of methods such as diaries of everyday UA practices, a database of UA activities, life cycle assessment (LCA), and material flow analysis to connect investigations developed at a garden scale to the city scale. A case study shows an application of the methodology.

This article examines impacts of infrastructure development and climate variability on economic outcomes for the Amu Darya Basin in Central Asia. It aims to identify the most economically productive mix of expanded reservoir storage for economic benefit sharing to occur, in which economic welfare of all riparians is improved. Policies examined include four combinations of storage infrastructure for each of two climate futures. An empirical optimization model is developed and applied to identify opportunities for improving the welfare of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. The analysis 1) characterizes politically constrained and economically optimized water-use patterns for these combinations of expanded reservoir storage capacity, 2) describes Pareto-Improving packages of expanded storage capacity that could raise economic welfare for all four riparians, and accounts for impacts for each of two climate scenarios. Results indicate that a combination of targeted water storage infrastructure and efficient water allocation could produce outcomes for which the discounted net present value of benefits are favorable for each riparian. Results identify a framework to provide economic motivation for all riparians to cooperate through development of water storage infrastructure. Our findings illustrate the principle that development of water infrastructure can expand the negotiation space by which all communities can gain economic benefits in the face of limited water supply. Still, despite our optimistic findings, patient and deliberate negotiation will be required to transform potential improvements into actual gains.

Hunger and thirst have distinct goals but control similar ingestive behaviors, and little is known about neural processes that are shared between these behavioral states. We identify glutamatergic neurons in the peri-locus coeruleus (periLCⱽᴳᴸᵁᵀ² neurons) as a polysynaptic convergence node from separate energy-sensitive and hydration-sensitive cell populations. We develop methods for stable hindbrain calcium imaging in free-moving mice, which show that periLCⱽᴳᴸᵁᵀ² neurons are tuned to ingestive behaviors and respond similarly to food or water consumption. PeriLCⱽᴳᴸᵁᵀ² neurons are scalably inhibited by palatability and homeostatic need during consumption. Inhibition of periLCⱽᴳᴸᵁᵀ² neurons is rewarding and increases consumption by enhancing palatability and prolonging ingestion duration. These properties comprise a double-negative feedback relationship that sustains food or water consumption without affecting food- or water-seeking. PeriLCⱽᴳᴸᵁᵀ² neurons are a hub between hunger and thirst that specifically controls motivation for food and water ingestion, which is a factor that contributes to hedonic overeating and obesity.

Latent inhibition (LI), operationally defined as the reduced conditioned response to a stimulus that has been preexposed before conditioning, seems to be determined by the interaction of different processes that includes attentional, associative, memory, motivational, and emotional factors. In this paper we focused on the role of deprivation level on LI intensity using an auditory fear conditioning procedure with rats. LI was observed when the animals were non-deprived, but it was disrupted when the rats were water- or food-deprived. We propose that deprivation induced an increase in attention to the to-be-CS, and, as a result, LI was disrupted in deprived animals. The implications of the results for the current interpretations of LI are also discussed.

In operant conditioning experiments, two methods are commonly used to motivate laboratory rats to perform designated tasks. The first is restricting food so that rats are forced to lose 20% of body weight within one week, followed by maintenance at 80% of the baseline weight for the remainder of the experiment. The second is restricting access to water to 15 min in each 24 h period. These methods are effective in motivating the animals. There is, however, little information available on the effects on performance in tests of behaviour that are not related to operant conditioning. In addition, it is not clear if these commonly used methods of food and water restriction will lead to physiological stress as indicated by an elevation of serum corticosterone. Male rats were either food-restricted to reduce and maintain their weight at 80% of baseline weight, or were restricted to 15 min access to water every 24 h. Activity in the open field was significantly greater in food-restricted rats than in water-restricted or control rats, but freezing behaviour was similar in all experimental groups. Food-restricted rats had a higher mean serum corticosterone level than water-restricted and control rats 37 days after the start of the experimental period. These data suggested that chronically restricting food and maintenance of body weight at 80% of baseline body weight led to significant behavioural changes and physiological stress. In contrast, water restriction did not lead to changes in behaviour or corticosterone levels. A second experiment was conducted to compare the effects of food restriction to 80% of baseline body weight, as described above, with a less stringent protocol in which test rats were initially reduced to 80% of baseline weight, but were then maintained at 80% of an ad libitum fed control rat's weight. Serum corticosterone levels and adrenal gland weights were measured after the initial week of forced weight loss and after maintenance for 21 days. Forced loss of 20% of body weight in the first week led to significantly increased serum corticosterone levels and adrenal gland weights compared to ad libitum fed controls. Serum corticosterone levels and adrenal gland weights in rats maintained at 80% of their initial body weight for 21 days remained higher than ad libitum fed control rats. However, rats maintained at 80% of an ad libitum fed control rat's weight did not differ from control rats in serum corticosterone levels or adrenal gland weights at the end of the 21-day study period. Adjustment of the feeding regimen in this manner eliminated physiological evidence of chronic stress.
