SIZE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF FIELD CROP FARMS
2020
Dorota Komorowska
The aim of the study is the assessment of the management effectiveness of production resources on farms of various sizes focused on cultivating cereal, oil and protein crops against a background of total field-crop farms and total farms. The assessment covered farms encompassed by the FADN system in 2017 in the scope of production organization and intensity, production and economic results as well as the effective management of resources. The productivity and profitability of resources on cereal farms was found to be on a far lower level, however, as farm size increased, the productivity of land resources generally rose, too. There is a reverse tendency when compared to the tendencies observed in the total number of farms, including horticulture farms. Together with an increase in farm size, differences in profitability declined. The greatest differences were observed when it came to land resource profitability, while the least in the scope of labour profitability. Therefore, it can be assumed that by increasing the size of cereal farms, the effectiveness of managing land resources on such agricultural holdings will clearly improve.

The technological process of grass feed production is considered as a complex system. From a mathematical point of view, all agricultural processes of the system are classified as difficult to formalize. Previous studies have shown that an effective model for controlling the technological process of grass feed production is a synthesis of a semantic object-oriented network, in the nodes of which mathematical models are located. This approach is natural, since it takes into account all the links in the technological chain, as well as imposed controlled (for example, agrotechnical periods) and uncontrolled (weather and climate) impacts on the system as a whole. In such business conditions, instead of the traditional deterministic modelling methods, the expert knowledge of highly qualified specialists is usually used. The method of constructing fuzzy-probabilistic models developed and confirmed in practice is increasingly used in agricultural production. This is due, first of all, to the fact that the modelling process on the basis of explicit and implicit expert knowledge does not require knowledge of special mathematical methods from workers. The whole process of building models is conducted in the professional language of experts. Moreover, the expert is used as an “intelligent measuring and diagnostic system”. The previously obtained metamodel as a model of the first stage of the hierarchy included five variables: soil resources, feed production, technological resource, material and technical base, weather and climate conditions. Only the technological resource was considered in detail, for which at the second level of the hierarchy a model was constructed according to six variables and then the variable “preservative application” is also represented by six variables of the third stage of the hierarchical model. This study presents fuzzy-possible models representing the branch of the semantic network in the variable “soil resources” of the original metamodel for controlling the entire technological chain of feed production. It is shown that the obtained models adequately represent the knowledge of experts on the tasks to be solved of a common problem − the construction of a control model for the technological process of the production of feed from herbs.

2020
Marina Anokhina
Agricultural economic growth requires management due to poor structurization. The study aimed to determine the parameters of the management strategy for the economic growth of agriculture in Russia. The research methodology relies on cognitive technologies of modelling the strategic alternatives of the economic development of the industrial complex using fuzzy cognitive logic. Static and dynamic analysis of the fuzzy cognitive maps on structural and dynamic indicators of agricultural economic growth in Russia allowed the forecast of the industry trends, influenced by various management factors. The option of an integrated management strategy for the economic growth of agriculture in Russia is proposed together with strategic maps, justified as a tool for its implementation. The created strategic alternative will allow the Russian agricultural and industrial complex to use the existing agricultural potential to achieve the target growth indicators and ensure sustainability.

2020
Qiu, Tongwei | Boris Choy, S.T. | Li, Shangpu | Ho, Jean | Luo, Biliang
China’s grain security is an increasing global concern. Most researchers argue that land renting-in leads to the cultivation of non-grain products in rural China. We use household-level data collected in China to assess the relationship between land renting-in and grain production. Our results indicate that land renting-in positively affects rice acreage, especially when there is less labor available for agriculture. The channel of the effect is that lessees tend to increase the use of machinery in rice production, but not in the production of cash crops because the production of grain crops can be more easily mechanized in rural China. The Chinese government should still pay close attention to the cultivation of non-grain products caused by land renting-in because workers in the production of cash crops may also be easily replaced by new agricultural technologies.

Growing of plants in artificial lighting conditions require a certain irradiation spectrum. High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are the cheapest way to generate optical radiation. However, their light quality is not fully suitable for plants. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) allow for almost any light quality, but they are still more expensive than HPS lamps. The study objective was to identify the light quality of a LED spectrum corrector used to complement HPS lamps in artificial plant lighting and to prove the practical relevance of this solution in the laboratory and commercial greenhouse conditions. A comparative laboratory experiment was carried out on tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.) transplants, Blagovest F1 cultivar, in IEEP (Saint Petersburg, Russia). The use of the spectrum corrector improved the transplants biometrics: increased number of leaves and their fresh mass, higher chlorophyll and dry matter content. A greenhouse experiment was carried out in Mezhvidi (Latgalia, Latvia) on mature tomato plants of Encore cultivar in three variants: under HPS lamps, under Phillips LED irradiators, and under the irradiators combining HPS lamps and the spectrum corrector. The effect of the irradiator type on the plants was assessed by the plant developmental stability estimated by the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of the leaf bilateral traits. The least favourable light environment with the maximum fluctuating asymmetry was found under HPS lamps (FAavg = 0.1064 rel. units). LED irradiators created better conditions for plant development (FAavg = 0.0767 rel. units). The use of the spectrum corrector provided the best light environment (FAav = 0.0659 rel. units). Under the combined irradiation, a higher yield and improved taste of tomato fruits were recorded. The experiment results prove the hybrid irradiation to improve the artificial plant lighting efficiency.
