Natural occurrence of wheat streak mosaic virus on wheat in Syria

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) was isolated in Syria from naturally infected wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum) infested with wheat leaf curl mite (Aceria tulipae (Keifer)) and showing stunting, severe leaf rolling and yellow spotting. The virus was identified by host-range studies and serology. Antiserum against purified Syrian isolate of WSMV (SW1-93) was produced in a rabbit and used for WSMV detection. This is the first report of natural occurrence of WSMV affecting wheat in Syria

Demography of greenbug (Homoptera: Aphididae) on wheat

Laboratory studies on life table of greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) on Kohinoor, Mehran-89 and Sarsabz wheat varieties were conducted during winter 1991. Life parameters, history on reproduction, longevity, total offsprings, innate capacity of increase (r) and man generation time were compared. The results indicated that the number of days to reproduction, mean generation time of three wheat cultivars were different, whereas longevity, total offsprings and innate capacity of increase were significantly different. The adult longevity was the highest on Mehran (41 days) followed buy Kohinoor (31 days) and Sarsabz (22 days). Similarly the total number of offspring per female was the lowest in Sarsabz (2.37) and the highest in Mehran- 89 (23.49). The innate capacity of increase (r) values were lowest for Sarsabz and highest for Mehran-89. The mortality in all the cultivars were high initially but decreased later gradually.

Effect of fall infestations of Russian wheat aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) on winter wheat yield and quality on the Canadian prairies

The effect of fall infestations of Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), was investigated in winter wheat in southern Alberta, Canada. In 3 trials, yield losses ranging from 25 to 37% were prevented by insecticide treatment of the Russian wheat aphid. The highest yield loss was associated with aphid densities of 4.81 + 0.61 aphids per plant in the early seedling stage (Zadoks 13) on 11 September 1990: subsequently, aphid densities in the control plots increased to 90.68 +/- 7.68 per plant by the last sampling date on 19 November. In all 3 trials, aphids did not survive the winter, but the fall infestations resulted in stand reductions through winterkill ranging from 28 to 35%. On a per plant basis, those plants that survived the winter fully recovered from aphid damage during the growing season. Quality analyses indicated that the overall effects on breadmaking quality were minor. There were no significant relationships between aphid densities and yield. However, yield was significantly correlated with plant stand in the spring, which in turn was significantly correlated with aphid densities during the previous fall. These data support the conclusion that, in southern Alberta, Russian wheat aphid damage is expressed in stand reductions through winterkill and that yield reductions occur primarily when stand reductions become significant. Once they survive winter, previously infested plants recover from aphid damage and yield losses are minimal, provided plants are not reinfested in the spring.

Progress of cooperation with CIMMYT on wheat breeding

CIMMYT spring wheat lines from Mexico and winter and facultative wheats from CIMMYT / Turkey program were introduced and tested in Anyang. In general, they are poorly adapted to central China's environment, however, several lines from rust screening nursery and double dwarf lines from ME1OE carry desirable characters such as big head and short stature and are involved in the crossing program in order to enhance the yield potential of local commercial varieties. Suggestions are also given concerning improvements of the adaptation of CIMMYT wheats in China and the efficiency of China / CIMMYT Shuttle Breeding Project.
