The efficacy of florfenicol was evaluated on experimental Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia in 5 to 7-week-old pigs. All pigs were intranasally inoculated with bacterial suspension containing 10(8) or 10(9) colony forming units of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Fukushima (serotype 2), Shope4074 (serotype 1), K17 (serotype 5), 8541 or 8543 (serotype 2; thiamphenicol-resistant strain). Florfenicol and thiamphenicol were given in feed for 12 days, from 5 days before inoculation to 7 days post inoculation (at necropsy). More than half the pigs died in the infected control groups, while no pigs died in florfenicol 50 ppm groups inoculated with each strain. On inoculation with thiamphenicol-sensitive strains, Fukushima, Shope4074 and K17, the average total score of clinical signs and percentage of lung lesion area in florfenicol 50 ppm groups were significantly lower than those in the infected control groups (P0.05). On inoculation with thiamphenicol-resistant strains, 8541 and 8543, the average total score of clinical signs and percentage of lung lesion area in florfenicol 50 ppm groups were significantly lower than those in the infected control and thiamphenicol 200 ppm groups (P0.05). The development of pleuropneumonia was remarkably prevented by medication with feed containing florfenicol in pigs inoculated with serotype 1, 2, 5 strains and thiamphenicol-resistant strains of A. pleuropneumoniae

There is increasing concern in the United States about the pesticide movement in soil, groundwater contamination, and pesticide residue in food. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy, degradation, and movement of fenamiphos (Nemacur 15G) in the soil and residues in squash fruit as influenced by four simulated rainfall treatments (2.5 or 5.0 cm each applied 1 or 3 days after nematicide application) under field conditions. In 1990, concentrations of fenamiphos were greater in the top 15 cm of soil in plots with no rainfall than in those treated with rainfall. Eighty to 95% of the fenamiphos recovered from treated plots was found in the 0-15-cm soil layer. The concentration of fenamiphos recovered from the 0-15-cm soil layer in 1991 was approximately one-half the concentration recovered in 1990, but greater concentrations of fenamiphos sulfoxide (an oxidation product of fenamiphos) were recovered in 1991 than in 1990. Concentrations of fenamiphos, fenamiphos sulfoxide, and fenamiphos sulfone were near or below detectable levels (0.002 mg/kg soil) below the 0-15-cm soil layer. Rainfall treatments did not affect the efficacy of the nematicide against Meloidogyne incognita race 1. The concentration of fenamiphos in squash in fruit in 1991 was below the detectable level (0.01 mg/kg).

In this paper the results of the investigation on the efficacy of some herbicides for weed control in soybean crop are presented. The applied herbicides manifested different efficacy depending on rainfall, reducing number of species, number of individuals and weed mass per surface unit. According to the degree of efficacy the investigated herbicides fall into three groups. The first group with the highest efficacy includes trifluralin+inmazaquin, alahlor+linuron and acethlor+linuron. In the second group with medium efficacy fall metolachlor+linuron and metolachlor+prometrin. The lowest efficacy was manifested by: trifluralin+linuron, clomazone and bendazon making the third group of investigated herbicides.
