For 115 days pigs were given feed containing 24-60% of a cracked rye. Histopathological (cloudy swelling) and histochemical (increased activity of acid phosphatase and decreased activity of lactic and succinic dehydrogenases) lesions developed in the liver and kidneys. The lesions were attributed to toxic action of 5-alkyloresorcine present in rye grains. Husking and silaging the grains decreased the content of the compound and eliminated its toxic action
