This is a study of the ACTH-cells of the anterior pituitary gland and the adrenal cortex in three-month-old rats treated with a single dose of hydrocortisone during the neonatal, the early of late juvenile period of development. The ultrastructural properties of ACTH-cells showed signs of retarded release of hormones in all of the treated animals, being more pronounced if the animals were treated during the juvenile period. The incorporation of 3H-hydrocortisone in the cells of the anterior pituitary gland of rats treated during the juvenile period was more intensive and the number of hypertrophied ACTH-cells in neonatally treated rats increased, on the basis of which it can be concluded that the regenerative ability is more pronounced if a longer period of time has passed after treatment with the tested steroid.
