Covalent coupling of proteins to different strains of bacteria modified via surface oxidation

Six different bacteria were investigated as protein carriers. Carbohydrate structures of the cell wall were oxidized and human IgG (immunoglobulin G), as a model protein, was bound covalently through Schiff base linkage. The resulting bacteria - protein conjugates were characterized in terms of the amount of hIgG (human immunoglobulin G) coupled per mass unit of bacteria. Agglutination reactions with sheep anti - hIgG (human immunoglobulin G) antiserum illustrated the potential application of this protein immobilized on bacteria as a solid support.
