Studies of chloramphenicol effects on white blood cell count of rams

Experiments were performed on 20 clinically healthy rams of the Tsigai breed, from 3 to 5 years of age and from 80 to 85 kg of body mass. Control rams received a daily dose of 5 ml of physiological solution, and experimental rams chloramphenicol in daily dose of 450 mg (0-1), 900 mg (0-2) or 1800 mg (0-3), during five days, intramuscularly. On the basis of the results the following can be concluded: 1) the therapeutic dose of chloramphenicol (900 mg) induces leucosis, and the double dose of this antibiotic (1800 mg) induces leucocytopenia; and 2) animal treated with chloramphenicol developed neutropenia, lymphocytosis and monocytosis, as well as transitional eosinophilia.
