The main goal of this study is to show the possibilities of dairy co-operatives, with a view to their economic substance and their experiences in Western Europe, for potentional use in Hungary for the future. The study also shows the brief history of dairy co-operatives in Hungary. The first dairy co-operatives were established in the last century. In Western Europe the so-called "promotional" dairy co-operatives are the most important ones with high market shares.
