The interrelationship between juxtaglomerular cell number and the seawater adaptability index (SWAI) in smelting wild and hatchery-reared masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) was examined to determine whether the cell number would be a useful indicator of seawater adaptability. Juxtaglomerular cell number correlated with the SWAI value in both smelting wild and hatchery-reared masu salmon. The results indicate that juxtaglomerular cell number is a useful indicator for seawater adaptability in smoking masu salmon.
