Effects of whole-shelled corn [Zea mays] feeding in the finishing period on growth performance and carcass measurements in Japanese Black steers

Forty-two Japanese Black steers were used for the evaluation of growth performance and carcass characteristics. These steers were equally divided into 3 groups to be fed on whole-shelled corn (WC), cracked barley (CB) or steam-rolled barley (RB) for 39 weeks prior to slaughter. Each concentrate contained 30% test grain and 8% chopped rice straw formulated the total mixed rations. Although the feed intake was greater for the WC steers than for CB steers (9.7 kg, 8.7 kg, P0.01), the final body weight of RB steers tended to be heaviest among the 3 groups (P
