Effects of carbon sources on amylase production by thermophilic bacteria

Maltose was found to be an inducer for the synthesis of amylase by the two strains of thermophilic bacteria isolated from a local hot spring. However, starch was shown to be the better inducer and glucose, on the other hand, repressed amylase synthesis. The repressive effect does not occur when starch is present in the media along with glucose. The repression of amylase systems is greater with higher levels of glucose.
