Developing export market opportunities for Australian beef in Japan were studied during a 40-day staff exchange programme. While considerable opportunities exist, Japan is particularly discerning in the type of beef it will import, which creates a number of challenges for the Australian beef industry. Market promotion remains a major challenge: the inferior image of imported beef in general in Japan and consequent discounted prices it receives appear in many cases unjustified.
