The high molecular weight composition of glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) of 99 Syrian grown bread wheat genotypes was studied using 10% polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS-PAGE). Twelve different HMW-GS were detected with 4 or 5 subunits present in any genotype. The results indicated that these genotypes contain different allelic frequencies to those reported by other workers at all three loci. Glu-D1 was the most important locus with 5+10 having the highest value, followed by Glu-B1 with 13+16 and 17+18 subunits as the most important alleles. Glu-Al alleles, however, had, in general, no influence on SDS sedimentation values. The relationships between the different alleles and the impact of each locus on gluten strength as determined by SDS sedimentation values are discussed
