This review presents evidence which challenges the "a calorie is a calorie" belief; diet composition may be as important as energy content in weight control. It explores: 1) dietary fat and body relationships; 2) preferences for dietary fat; 3) weight changes on isocaloric diets which substitute carbohydrate for fat; 4) synthesis of adipose tissue from fat and carbohydrate; and 5) fat intake and weight reduction.
