Recommendations from the final report of the 1984 US Study Commission on Dietetics are summarized and discussed. Specific attention is given to the important and present status of the dietetic programs; educational alternatives and accreditation of dietitians and dietetic programs; the registering, licensing, and certification of dietitians; the question of whether there are adequate dietitians currently available in the US and what future needs might demand; employment opportunities and practices in dietetic practice; dietetic support personnel needs; and the role of the American Dietetic Association, its by-laws, and its future mandates.
