Plasma and tissue glutamine response to acute and chronic supplementation with L-glutamine and L-alanyl-L-glutamine in rats

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of acute oral supplementation with glutamine (GLN) or the dipeptide L-alanyl-L-glutamine (ALA-GLN) on the kinetic response of plasma GLN concentration, as well as the effect of chronic supplementation on plasma, muscle, and liver GLN levels. Acute supplementation with GLN and ALA-GLN significantly increased plasma GLN concentration compared to basal values. However, plasma GLN concentration 30 minutes after supplementation and the area under the curve were significantly higher in the group acutely supplemented with ALA-GLN than in the GLN-supplemented group (P < 0.01). Chronic supplementation with GLN or ALA-GLN did not alter glutaminemia; however, higher muscle (P < 0.05) and liver (P < 0.01) GLN levels were observed for the ALA-GLN-supplemented group. In conclusion, acute ALA-GLN supplementation promoted a greater increase in glutaminemia, and chronic supplementation increased muscle and liver GLN stores.
