Efficacy of albendazole on strongylosis of sheep by faecal egg count reduction test in some farms of Karnataka

Faecal samples of total 264 sheep from four different sheep farms in Karnataka were screened to observe the incidence of gastrointestinal nematodes. It was found that 93% of the sheep harboured strongyle infection with light to moderate intensity. The anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole was assessed using faecal egg count reduction test in all the four farms. It was found that the efficacy of albendazole was 52% in Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) Sheep Farm, 77% in Sheep Breeding and Training Centre (SBTC) Dhanagur 47% in Livestock Research and Information Centre (LRIC), Nagamangala, and 70% in SBTC Kudapura indicating the emergence of albendazole resistance in strongyle worms.
