A massive and dense textured layer (ca. 35–50 cm thick) of hardpan was uncovered at the top layer, which capped the unweathered sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings in depth and physically supported gravelly soil root zones sustaining native vegetation for more than a decade. For the purpose of understanding functional roles of the hardpan layer in the cover profile, the present study has characterized the microstructures of the hardpan profile at different depth compared with the tailings underneath the hardpans. A suit of microspectroscopic technologies was deployed to examine the hardpan samples, including field emission-scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (FE-SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). The XRD and Fe K-edge XAFS analysis revealed that pyrite in the tailings had been largely oxidised, while goethite and ferrihydrite had extensively accumulated in the hardpan. The percentage of Fe-phyllosilicates (e.g., biotite and illite) decreased within the hardpan profile compared to the unweathered tailings beneath the hardpan. The FE-SEM-EDS analysis showed that the fine-grained Ca-sulfate (possibly gypsum) evaporites appeared as platelet-shaped that deposited around pyrite, dolomite, and crystalline gypsum particles, while Fe-Si gels exhibited a needle-like texture that aggregated minerals together and produced contiguous coating on pyrite surfaces. These microstructural findings suggest that the weathering of pyrite and Fe-phyllosilicates coupled with dolomite dissolution may have contributed to the formation of Ca-sulfate/gypsum evaporites and Fe-Si gels. These findings have among the first to uncover the microstructure of hardpan formed at the top layer of sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings, which physically capped the unweathered tailings in depth and supported root zones and native vegetation under semi-arid climatic conditions.

Chen, Chengyu | Wei, Jingyue | Li, Jing | Duan, Zhihui | Huang, Weilin
Soot nanoparticles (SNPs) produced from incomplete combustion have strong impacts on aquatic environments as they eventually reach surface water, where their environmental fate and transport are largely controlled by aggregation. This study investigated the aggregation kinetics of SNPs in the presence of macromolecules including fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), alginate polysaccharide, and bovine serum albumin (BSA, protein) under various environmentally relevant solution conditions. Our results showed that increasing salt concentrations induced SNP aggregation by suppressing electrostatic repulsion and that CaCl2 exhibited stronger effect than NaCl in charge neutralization, which is in agreement with the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The aggregation rates of SNPs were variously reduced by macromolecules, and such stabilization effect was the greatest by BSA, followed by HA, alginate, and FA. Steric repulsion resulting from macromolecules adsorbed on SNP surfaces was mainly responsible for enhancing SNP stability. Such steric repulsion appeared to be affected by macromolecular structure, as BSA having a more compact globular structure on SNP surfaces imparted long-range steric repulsive forces and retarded the SNP aggregation rate by 10–100 times. In addition, alginate was shown to enhance SNP aggregation by ∼10 times at high CaCl2 concentrations due to alginate gel formation via calcium bridging. The results may bear strong significance for the fate and transport of SNPs in both natural and controlled environmental systems.

The Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films (DGT) technique using PIWBA resin (The Dow Chemical Company) was developed and validated for the measurement of uranium (U) concentration in natural and uranium mining influenced waters. The U uptake on the PIWBA resin gel was 97.3 ± 0.4% (batch method; Vsol = 5 mL; [U] = 20 μg L−1; 0.01 M NaNO3; pH = 7.0 ± 0.2). The optimal eluent was found to be HNO3conc/70 °C with an elution efficiency of 88.9 ± 1.4%. The laboratory DGT investigation demonstrated that the PIWBA resin gel exhibits a very good performance across a wide range of pH (3–9) and ionic strength (0.001–0.7 M NaNO3) at different time intervals. Neither effect of PO43− (up to 1.72 × 10−4 M), nor of HCO3− (up to 8.20 × 10−3 M) on the quantitative measurement of uranium by DGT-PIWBA method were observed. Only at very high Ca2+ (2.66 × 10−4 M), and SO42− (5.55 × 10−4 M) concentration, the U uptake on DGT-PIWBA was appreciably lessened. In-situ DGT field evaluation was carried out in the vicinity of three former uranium mining sites in France (Loire-Atlantique and Herault departments), which employ different water treatment technologies and have different natural geochemical characteristics. There was a similar or inferior U uptake on DGT-Chelex®-100 in comparison with the U accumulation on a DGT-PIWBA sampler. Most likely, the performance of Chelex®-100 was negatively affected by a highly complex matrix of mining waters. The high concentration and identity of co-accumulating analytes, typical for the mining environment, did not have a substantial impact on the quantitative uptake of labile U species on DGT- PIWBA.The use of the polyphenol impregnated anion exchange resin leads to a significant advancement in the application and development of the DGT technique for determination of U in the vicinity of the former uranium mining sites.

Toxicity of pesticides towards microorganisms can have a major impact on ecosystem function. Nevertheless, some microorganisms are able to respond quickly to this stress by degrading these molecules. The edaphic Bacillus megaterium strain Mes11 can degrade the herbicide mesotrione. In order to gain insight into the cellular response involved, the intracellular proteome of Mes11 exposed to mesotrione was analyzed using the two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) approach coupled with mass spectrometry. The results showed an average of 1820 protein spots being detected. The gel profile analyses revealed 32 protein spots whose abundance is modified after treatment with mesotrione. Twenty spots could be identified, leading to 17 non redundant proteins, mainly involved in stress, metabolic and storage mechanisms. These findings clarify the pathways used by B. megaterium strain Mes11 to resist and adapt to the presence of mesotrione.

2011
Wu, Zhihao | He, Mengchang | Lin, Chunye
Vertical profiles of metals were measured by the in situ application of DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films). Well-defined laboratory systems ensured the good reproducibility and precision DGT accumulated metals on a chelex resin after diffusional transport through a layer of hydrogel. Three kinds of DGT probes (with three thicknesses of diffusive gel: 0.40 mm, 0.80 mm and 1.92 mm) measured interfacial concentration and induced flux from solid to solution phase which had intricate variations with depth. The DGT induced flux and interfacial concentration of four metals belonged to “partially sustained” state, indicating a labile equilibrium of metals between solid phase and porewater. The concentration profiles showed the good correlation between Mn and Co and peak concentrations of Mn and Fe between −2.00 cm and −5.25 cm with depth.

2017
The elastic cellulose-based aerogels (CBAs) with highly porous (99.56%) and low-density (0.0065gcm−1) were prepared using Eichhornia crassipes as cellulose source and polyvinyl alcohol directly as cross-linker via a facile and environment-friendly process. The prepared CBAs exhibited excellent oil/solvent sorption capacities (60.33–152.21gg−1), super-hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 156.7°) as well as remarkable reusability. More importantly, the absorbed oil could be quickly recovered by simple squeezing without significantly structure damage (at least 16 times). All these merits make CBAs very promising materials for oil spillage cleaning.

In this study, reusable poly(alkoxysilane) organogels with high absorption capacities were synthesized by the condensation of a cyclo aliphatic glycol (UNOXOL™) and altering the chain length of the alkyltriethoxysilanes. The structural and thermal properties of cross-linked poly(alkoxysilane) polymers were determined by FTIR, solid-state 13C and 29Si CPMAS NMR and TGA. The oil absorbency of poly(alkoxysilane)s was determined through oil absorption tests, absorption and desorption kinetics. Results showed that the highest oil absorbency capacities were found to be 295% for hexane, 389% for euro diesel, 428% for crude oil, 652% for gasoline, 792% for benzene, 792% for toluene, 868% for tetrahydrofuran, and 1060% for dichloromethane for the poly(alkoxysilane) gels based on UNOXOL™ and dodecyltriethoxysilane. Owing to their hydrophobic structure, the poly(alkoxysilane) organogels can selectively absorb crude oil from water. The reusability of the absorbents was quantitatively investigated, demonstrating that absorbents can be used effectively at least nine times.

A bacterial consortium immobilized in magnetic floating biochar gel beads is proposed to remove high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The microbial consortium performed better than single strains and consisted of four strains of marine bacteria for degrading pyrene (PYR), two strains for benzo(a)pyrene (BAP), and three strains for indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (INP), which were isolated from oil-contaminated seawater. The immobilized cells could biodegrade 89.8%, 66.9% and 78.2% of PYR, BAP and INP, respectively, and had better tolerance to pH, temperature and salinity than free cells. The Andrews model was used to explore the biodegradation kinetics, and when the initial concentrations of PYR, BAP, and INP were 7.80, 3.05, and 3.41 mg/L, the specific biodegradation rates reached maximum values of 0.2507, 0.1286, and 0.1930 d⁻¹, respectively. The immobilized microbial consortium had a high HMW-PAH removal ability and good floatability and magnetic properties and could be collected by an external magnetic field.

Microplastics (MPs) have become a major global issue; their release from various products affects the aquatic environment, especially marine ecosystems. As a primary source of MPs, personal care and cosmetics products (PCCPs) containing MPs contribute to this environmental risk. We visited several supermarket chains in Beijing, China to identify PCCPs containing MPs. Overall, 7.1% of facial cleansers contained MPs, with an average weight of 25.04±10.69mgMP/g and average size of 313±130μm; whereas, 2.2% of shower gel products contained an average weight of 17.80±7.50mgMPs/g with an average size of 422±185μm. The majority of MPs were made of polyethylene, based on Raman and Fourier transform-infrared spectra analyses, while only a few were made of walnut shells and carbon particles. Finally, estimated 39tons MPs were released into the environment based on PCCPs use in China based on available data.

Air pollution control (APC) residues, which are known to be the byproducts of incineration treatment, exhibit a high leaching potential of toxic metals. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S–H), which is a major hydration product of hardened cement and immobilizes toxic metal, can be formed by the reaction of Ca with pozzolanic Si in a highly alkaline environment. Toxic metals might be immobilized by the addition of pozzolanic material to APC residues (instead of using cement), which is a Ca source and provides an alkaline condition. In this study, diatomite, which mainly comprises amorphous silica (SiO₂·nH₂O), was investigated as a pozzolanic material for Pb immobilization in APC residues obtained from a municipal solid waste incinerator. APC residues were cured with and without the addition of diatomite at different temperatures. When diatomite was added to APC residues, pozzolanic phases such as C-S–H gel were formed via the consumption of Ca(OH)₂ and CaClOH. Compared to APC residues cured without diatomite, the leaching of Pb decreased by 99% for APC residues cured for 14 days with 10% diatomite at 70 °C. The results of sequential chemical extraction showed that water-soluble Pb in APC residues was reduced from 10.3% to nearly zero by the pozzolanic reaction. Consequently, the leaching amount of Pb dropped below 0.3 mg/L (Japanese criteria for landfill disposal). Overall, these experiments provide promising results regarding the possibility of using diatomite for pretreating APC residues.
