The key role of Geobacter in regulating emissions and biogeochemical cycling of soil-derived greenhouse gases 全文
2020
Li, Tian | Zhou, Qixing
In the past two decades, more and more attentions have been paid to soil-derived greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) because there are signs that they have rising negative impacts on the sustainability of the earth surface system. Farmlands, particularly paddy soils, have been regarded as the most important emitter of GHGs (nearly 17%) due to a large influx of fertilization and the abundance in animals, plants and microorganisms. Geobacter, as an electroactive microorganism widely occurred in soil, has been well studied on electron transport mechanisms and the direct interspecies electron transfer. These studies on Geobacter illustrate that it has the ability to be involved in the pathways of soil GHG emissions through redox reactions under anaerobic conditions. In this review, production mechanisms of soil-derived GHGs and the amount of these GHGs produced had been first summarized. The cycling process of CH₄ and N₂O was described from the view of microorganisms and discussed the co-culture relationships between Geobacter and other microorganisms. Furthermore, the role of Geobacter in the production of soil-derived GHGs is defined by biogeochemical cycling. The complete view on the effect of Geobacter on the emission of soil-derived GHGs has been shed light on, and appeals further investigation.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) the outbreak of a new strain of coronavirus that causes a serious disease in the city of Wuhan, China. This outbreak was classified as SARS-CoV2 and is the cause of the COVID-19 disease. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declares it a Pandemic and today it is considered the greatest challenge in global health that humanity has faced since World War II and it is estimated that between 40 and 60% of the population worldwide will catch the virus. This has caused enormous challenges in countries around the world in social, economic, environmental and obviously health issues. These challenges are mainly due to the effects of the established quarantines in almost all capitals and major cities around the world, from Asia, Europe to America. However, these lockdown which began worldwide from January 23, have had a significant impact on the environment and on the air quality of cities as recently reported by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and ESA (European Space Agency), with reductions according to them of up to 30% in some of the epicenters such as the case of Wuhan. Knowing that air pollution causes approximately 29% of lung cancer deaths, 43% of COPD deaths, and 25% of ischemic heart disease deaths, it is important to know the effects of quarantines in cities regarding air quality to take measures that favor populations and urban ecosystems when the emergency ends. Therefore, this paper describes the behavior of PM₂.₅ emissions particulate matter from the 50 most polluted capital cities in the world according to the WHO, measured before-after the start of the quarantine. Likewise, the impact at the local and global level of this emissions behavior, which averaged 12% of PM₂.₅ decrease in these cities.

2020
Buss, Nicholas | Nelson, Kiersten N. | Hua, Jessica | Relyea, Rick A.
The application of roadway deicing salts is increasing the salinity of freshwater systems. Increased salinization from salts, such as NaCl, CaCl₂ and MgCl₂, can have direct, negative impacts on freshwater organisms at concentrations found in nature. Yet, our understanding of how these salts can indirectly impact freshwater organisms by altering important ecological interactions, such as those between hosts and their parasites, is limited. Using a larval amphibian and infectious free-living helminth (i.e. trematode) model, we examined whether exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of NaCl, CaCl₂ and MgCl₂ 1) influence trematode mortality; 2) alter amphibian-trematode interactions; and 3) alter larval amphibian activity (a behavior associated with parasite avoidance). We found that exposure to CaCl₂ greatly reduced trematode survival across all Cl⁻ concentrations (230, 500, 860 and 1000 mg Cl⁻ L⁻¹) while NaCl and MgCl₂ had no effect. When both host and parasites were exposed to the salts, exposure to NaCl, but not MgCl₂ or CaCl₂, increased infection. The lack of effect of CaCl₂ on infection was likely driven by CaCl₂ reducing trematode survival. Exposure to NaCl increased infection at 500 mg Cl⁻ L⁻¹, but not 230 or 860 mg Cl⁻ L⁻¹. Increased infection was not due to salt exposure altering tadpole behavior. Our results suggest that NaCl can negatively impact amphibian populations indirectly by increasing trematode infections in tadpole hosts.

Wu, Yan | Simon, Kendall L. | Best, David A. | Bowerman, William | Venier, Marta
Decades of large-scale production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have resulted in their ubiquitous presence in the environment worldwide. Similarly to other persistent and bioaccumulative organic contaminants, some PFASs, particularly the long-chain congeners, can be biomagnified via food webs, making top predators vulnerable to elevated PFAS exposure. In this study, we measured seven classes of PFASs in bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) eggs for the first time. The eggs (n = 22) were collected from the North American Great Lakes in 2000–2012. The ranges of total concentrations of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (∑PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (∑PFCAs) were 30.5–1650 and 5.4–216 ng/g wet weight (ww), respectively. In addition to these traditional PFAS compounds, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTS; median: 15.7 ng/g ww), perfluoro-4-ethylcyclohexanesulfonic acid (PFECHS; 0.22 ng/g ww), and 8-chloro-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (Cl-PFOS, detected in wildlife for the first time; 0.53 ng/g ww) were also frequently detected. Bald eagle eggs from breeding areas located less than 8 km from a Great Lake shoreline or tributary had significantly greater total PFAS concentrations (∑PFASs) than those from breeding areas located further than 8 km (p < 0.05). In these samples, ∑PFASs rivalled the total concentration of brominated flame retardants, and were significantly greater than those of several other organic contaminants, such as dechlorane-related compounds, organophosphate esters, and flame retardant metabolites.

As a well-known toxic element, antimony occurred in a wide range of concentrations in the geothermal waters discharging from Rehai and Daggyai, two representative hydrothermal areas in the Yunnan-Sichuan-Tibet Geothermal Province of China. Antimony speciation in different types of the hot springs in Rehai and Daggyai varied greatly as well, and tri- and tetrathioantimonate were detected in most neutral to alkaline Rehai hot springs. Neutral to alkaline pH, high sulfide concentrations, and high sulfide to antimony ratios were the critical factors promoting the formation of thioantimonates. The fact that no thioantimonates were detected in neutral to alkaline Daggyai hot springs is attributed to high concentrations of coexistent arsenic capable of inhibiting the thiolation of oxyantimony anions, because thioantimonates are kinetically more labile than thioarsenates. Upon discharge of the hot springs, both total aqueous antimony and arsenic decreased rapidly and substantially via immobilization to the sediments in the spring vents and their outflow channels. Some of the common iron-bearing minerals in the spring sediments, like pyrite and goethite, are known sinks for antimony and arsenic. Yet, an interesting difference was observed with antimony and iron contents in the sediment samples showing a significant correlation that was lacking for arsenic and iron contents. The explanation might be that for arsenic, sorption affinities are known to vary significantly with aqueous arsenic speciation and mineral phases. Typically, thiolation increases, and oxidation decreases arsenic mobility. Sorption experiments for antimony conducted in the present study, in contrast, showed that different antimony species were comparably sorbed to pyrite over a wide range of initial antimony concentrations and to goethite at relatively low initial antimony concentrations (but still covering the concentration range of antimony in common natural waters), so neither thiolation nor oxidation contributed significantly to the mobility of antimony in the hot springs investigated in this study.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most harmful and widespread environmental pollutants. Despite decades-long research efforts, the remediation of water contaminated by Cd has remained a significant challenge. A novel carbon material, pinecone biochar, was previously hypothesized to be a promising adsorbent for Cd, while so far, it has received little attention. This study evaluated the sorption capacity of pinecone biochar through isotherm experiments. Based on Langmuir model, the adsorption maximum for Cd(II) was up to 92.7 mg g⁻¹. The mechanism of Cd(II) adsorption on pinecone biochar was also explored through both thermodynamic and kinetics adsorption experiments, as well as both solution and solid-phase microstructure characterization. The solid-solution partitioning behaviour of Cd(II) fitted best with the Tόth model while the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order rate, suggesting that the Cd(II) adsorption on the pinecone biochar was mainly a chemisorption process. Microstructure characteristics and mechanism analysis further suggested that coprecipitation and surface complexation were the main mechanisms of Cd adsorption by biochar. Coprecipitation occurred mainly through the forms of Cd(OH)₂ and CdCO₃. Our results demonstrated that pinecone biochar was an efficient adsorbent which holds a huge potential for Cd(II) removal from aqueous solution.

Association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and obesity remains inconclusive, and the evidence from rural areas was limited. Thus, this study aimed to assess the association between ambient air pollution and obesity based on different anthropometric indices in Chinese rural adults, and further to compare the effect sizes of different air pollution types. A total of 38,824 participants (aged 18–79 years) were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Logistic and multivariable linear regression model were used to examine the association between ambient air pollution exposure (including particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 1.0 μm (PM₁), ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), and ≤10 μm (PM₁₀), and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)) and obesity as well as obese anthropometric indices (including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage (BFP), and visceral fat index (VFI)). The potential effect modifications were also examined. Positive associations were found between long-term exposure to PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀ and NO₂ and obesity regardless of how obesity was defined (false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05). Moreover, BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR, BFP, and VFI displayed increased trends with PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀ and NO₂ concentrations increasing (all FDR<0.05). PM₁₀ had the largest effects on obesity among the four types of air pollution. The elderly, women, individuals with low level of education and income, and those who had high fat diet were more vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution. In addition, the results of the sensitivity analysis showed that those associations between ambient air pollution and obesity remained robust. These findings suggest that long-term exposure to ambient air pollutant (particularly PM₁₀) may be positively associated with obesity in Chinese rural adults, especially among the elderly, women, individuals with low education and income, as well as unhealthy lifestyles.

PM2.5 pollution is an important and urgent problem in China that can increase mortality and hospital admissions. Traffic-originated PM2.5 organic component (tPo) mainly contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Research has shown that PAHs can promote invasion, metastasis, and cancer stem cell properties in lung adenocarcinoma cells, but the exact toxicological mechanism is unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effect of lncRNAs on the progression of lung adenocarcinoma induced by tPo and the underlying mechanisms mediated by lncRNA-signaling pathway interactions. We found that chronic tPo treatment upregulated the expression of loc107985872, which further promoted cell invasion and migration, EMT and cancer stem cell properties via notch1 pathway in lung adenocarcinoma cells. Meanwhile, activation of the notch1 signaling pathway through loc107985872 might be associated with abnormally high expression of its upstream proteins, such as ADAM17, PSEN1 and DLL1. Moreover, tPo exposure induced EMT and the acquisition of cancer stem cell-like properties via the notch1 signaling pathway in vivo. In summary, loc107985872 upregulated by tPo promoted lung adenocarcinoma progression via the notch1 signaling pathway.

Wastewater discharges from dairy industries can cause a range of harmful effects in aquatic ecosystems, including a decline in biodiversity due to species evasion. Therefore, it is important to know the purification potential of rivers for the removal of pollutants released in dairy wastewater (DWW). The hypothesis adopted in this work was that the release of DWW into stretches of the Ribeirão dos Pombos River (São Paulo State, Brazil) might trigger an avoidance response, resulting in fish migrating to other regions, with the response being greater when the self-cleaning potential of the river is smaller. Therefore, the goals of the present study were to: (i) investigate how land use and seasonality of the rainfall regime influence the quality of the water in different areas of the river (P1: river source; P2: urban region; P3: rural region); (ii) assess the potential of the river to purify DWW; and (iii) evaluate the potential toxicity and repellency of DWW to the freshwater fish Danio rerio, using acute toxicity (mortality) and non-forced avoidance tests, respectively. P1 was shown to be the most preserved area. The chemical composition of the river varied seasonally, with higher concentrations of Cl⁻ and SO₄²⁻ at P3 during the rainy period. The river purification potential for DWW was higher at P2, due to greater microbiological activity (associated with higher BOD). The DWW was more acutely toxic in water from P2. The avoidance response was strongly determined by the concentration of DWW, especially for water from P2. The high capacity for self-cleaning at P2 did not seem sufficient to maintain the stability of the ecosystem. Finally, the non-forced exposure system proved to be a suitable approach that can assist in predicting how contaminants may affect the spatial distributions of organisms.

Natural media such as soil and sediment contain mineralogical and organic components with distinct chemical, surface, and electrostatic properties. To better understand the role of various soil and sediment components on particle transport, columns were packed with quartz sand and natural sediment with added Fe oxyhydroxide coating, illite clay, and peat moss to investigate how these added components influence nTiO₂ retention and transport in geochemically heterogeneous medium. Results showed that nTiO₂ transport was low at pH 5, attributable to the electrostatic attraction between positively-charged nTiO₂ and negatively-charged medium. While illite did not notably affect nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, Fe oxyhydroxide coating increased nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic repulsion between Fe oxyhydroxide and nTiO₂. Peat moss also increased nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, attributable to the increased DOC concentration, which resulted in higher DOC adsorption to nTiO₂ and intensified electrostatic repulsion between nTiO₂ and the medium. At pH 9, nTiO₂ transport was high due to the electrostatic repulsion between negatively-charged nTiO₂ and medium surfaces. Fe oxyhydroxide coating at pH 9 slightly delayed nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic attraction, while illite clay and peat moss substantially inhibited nTiO₂ transport via straining/entrapment or electrostatic attraction. Overall, this study demonstrated that pH has a considerable effect on how minerals and organic components of a medium influence nTiO₂ transport. At low pH, electrostatic attraction was the dominant mechanism, therefore, nTiO₂ mobility was low regardless of the differences in mineralogical and organic components. Conversely, nTiO₂ mobility was high at high pH and nTiO₂ retention was dominated by straining/entrapment and sensitive to the mineralogical and organic composition of the medium.
