Meiofauna and nematode community composition in a hydrothermal vent and deep-sea sediments in the Central Indian Ridge

The hydrothermal ecosystem is very unusual, yet little research has so far been conducted on meiofauna in hydrothermal zones. To identify the communities of both meiofauna and nematodes around the Onnuri Vent Field (OVF), we collected sediment from a hydrothermal zone in the OVF and deep-sea (DS) sediments (non-vent) outside the OVF. Sampling was conducted at seven stations using multiple corers on the Research Vessel ISABU in June 2018 and June–July 2019. The average densities of meiofauna ± standard deviation ranged from 21.7 ± 5.2 to 122.3 ± 45.0 individuals/10 cm². The structure of the meiofaunal community differed between the OVF and DS. The two most dominant groups of meiofauna in both environments were nematodes and harpacticoids. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in the structure of the nematode community between OVF and DS. We also found that the richness, evenness, and diversity of nematodes in the OVF were lower than those in the DS.

Seabird eggs are considered a favourable matrix for monitoring marine pollutants and are widely used as higher trophic level indicators. Concentrations of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Σ15PAH) were determined in the eggs of four piscivorous seabirds in Ireland from multiple colonies for the first time, Common Guillemot Uria aalge, Northern Gannet Morus bassanus, Common Tern Sterna hirundo and Arctic Tern S. paradisaea. PAH concentrations were generally lower than levels detected in eggs from other seabird studies and considerably lower than concentrations associated with no adverse effect in the eggs of domestic avian species. This study indicates potential site and species differences in PAH concentrations. Baseline data of PAHs in a range of seabird species from this study may provide an important reference point should a major pollution event occur in European waters, such as an oil spill.

Plastics are the most important component in marine debris. In turn, within plastics, microplastics (<5 mm) are those that most affect marine biota. Thus, this review has as its main objective to show the current state of studies of microplastics, as well as to determine the groups of vertebrates most affected by microplastics, and the type and predominant color of microplastics. For this research, we review a total of 132 articles, from 2010 to May of 2020. Our results show that the group more affected are turtles with 88% of the specimens contaminated by microplastics and median of 121.73 particles/individue. The predominant type is fibers (67.3%), polymer is polyethylene (27.3%), size is less than 2 mm (73.6%), and color is blue (32.9%).

The seasonal bioaccumulation of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) in sea snail (Hexaplex trunculus) and sea cucumber (Holothuria polii) from Mar Menor lagoon were characterised. The highest concentrations of p,p'-DDE were detected in the central and south part of Mar Menor lagoon. However, the highest concentrations of metals in sea snail and holothurians were detected in the influence area of El Beal wadi. Biomagnification factors (BMF) in sea snail from cockle (sea snail-cockle concentration ratio) were higher than 5 for metal and organochlorinated compounds. However, similar concentrations were observed in both species for PAHs due to gastropods capability of metabolising these pollutants. Consequently, sea snail is proposed as a sentinel for trace metals, PCBs and OCPs in the coastal lagoons, not only due to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification capacity but also the easy sampling and amply distribution in many coastal areas.

This study reports the levels of plastic contamination in the Atlantic Ocean between 35°N and 32°S during the 1st stage of the 79th cruise of the “Akademik Mstislav Keldysh” from December 12, 2019, to January 4, 2020. A subsurface pump system and a Manta net were used for seawater filtration. Twenty-seven samples were visually analyzed with a microscope. It was found that almost every subsurface sample contained potentially plastic particles, which were classified according to their type and size. Plastic fragments were more commonly found in the samples taken from the surface. In the subsurface layer, the majority of the detected particles were fibers. These results also indicate that minimal concentrations of plastics tend to be found near the equator and to the north of the Canary Islands. The maximum microplastic concentrations were found in tropical zones. The obtained results are in good agreement with previous models and field studies.

Eighteen trace elements were analyzed in a 120-year sediment core from Daya Bay. Burial flux history and potential provenance, the relationships among trace elements, and biogenic compositions were analyzed for determining the trend and extent of trace element accumulation and identifying corresponding anthropogenic effects. Additionally, the effects of anthropogenic activities on Daya Bay were reconstructed, and a baseline/background estimation was provided for Daya Bay. The burial fluxes of V, Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pb, Hg, Zn, Mo, Ag, As, Se, and Tl increased from 1960 to 2010, especially after the late 1980s. Our results are useful for understanding pollution and land-sea interactions along the coasts of the South China Sea, especially in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

An aim of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science is to quantify marine plastic debris in the marine environment. This study analyzes peer-reviewed articles on marine debris monitoring conducted on beaches in the Wider Caribbean Region, with a focus on marine plastic debris. Governance and funding regimes for monitoring events were assessed to determine strategies needed for coordinated and harmonized marine plastic debris monitoring in the Wider Caribbean Region. High variation in standardized survey protocols were observed during monitoring events. Standardization of sampling methodology and reporting metrics among other considerations, are needed to establish a regional marine plastic debris monitoring program that can inform policy for the Wider Caribbean Region.

Polychaete worms can eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments through a mechanism that increases their water solubility. This detoxification starts with cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) and then with glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Here, a novel GST gene was identified and characterized from the widespread polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis. The full-length cDNA of GST is 1544 bp and encodes 256 amino acids, belonging to the omega class. Gene expression patterns in P. aibuhitensis showed that its transcriptional level was positively correlated with the concentration of benzo[α]pyrene (0.5, 2, 4, and 8 μg/L) exposure but was negatively correlated with a PAH benzene ring after it was exposed to the same mass concentrations of fluoranthene (3.2 μg/L), phenanthrene (2.9 μg/L), and benzo[α]pyrene (4.0 μg/L) during the 14-day experimentation. These findings indicate that omega GST may play an important role in the phase II detoxification of PAHs in polychaete worms, and the persistence and bioavailability of PAHs may depend on benzene rings.

Microplastics are gaining worldwide attention due to their omnipresence. The marine environment is one of the most affected systems; especially the sediment compartment. Microplastic separation from the sediment matrix is the first step to evaluate its abundance and availability. Nevertheless, a lack of consistency in extraction protocols is a fact. This paper describes the optimization of the microplastic extraction procedure from marine sediments. The Plackett-Burman saturated factorial design was used to identify the significant factors and to select optimum working conditions. With this purpose, the following variables were studied: the number of extractions; the amount of sediment; the settling time; the density separation solution volume; the agitation time and the suitability of using wet or freeze-dried sediment. The Plackett-Burman design has revealed that the most statistically significant variables were sediment mass and agitation time. The optimized method was applied for two marine sediments collected in the Mar Menor Lagoon.

We studied marine litter ingestion in 380 neonate sea turtles that washed ashore dead onto Florida's central Atlantic coast (USA) following onshore winds. Our sample of “washbacks” included 284 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 95 green turtles (Chelonia mydas), and one hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata). Of these, 78.7% had ingested plastics and 45.3% had ingested tar. There was a significant relationship between turtles' carapace length and total mass of ingested plastic. Ingested plastics included microplastics (<5 mm) and larger sizes up to 25% of carapace length. Washbacks' body condition indices were significantly poorer than condition indices of wild turtles captured at sea. Washbacks showed a negative association between plastic load and body condition index, evidence that high plastic loads resulted in diminished nutrition, with possible effects on somatic growth, stage duration, and survivorship. Evidence points to plastics ingestion being an important source of population-level effects in neonate sea turtles.
