Water pollution by pesticides used in agriculture is currently a major concern both in Spain and in Europe as a whole, prompting the need to evaluate water quality and ecological risk in areas of intensive agriculture. This study involved monitoring pesticide residues and certain degradation products in surface and ground waters of the Denomination of Origin (DO) Jumilla vineyard area in Spain. Sixty-nine pesticides were selected and evaluated at twenty-one sampling points using a multi-residue analytical method, based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analysis by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), providing reliable results. Twenty-six compounds from those selected were detected in the samples analyzed (eleven insecticides including one degradation product, nine herbicides, and six fungicides) and fifteen of them were found in concentrations over 0.1 μg L⁻¹ (upper threshold established by the EU for pesticides detected in waters for human consumption). Indoxacarb was present in more than 70% of the samples, being the most frequently detected compound in water samples. Some pesticides were ubiquitous in all the water samples. Ecotoxicological risk indicators, toxic units (TUs) and risk quotients (RQs), for algae, Daphnia magna and fish were calculated to estimate the environmental risk of the presence of pesticides in waters. The compounds with the highest risk were the herbicides pendimethalin, with RQ values > 1 for the three aquatic organisms, and diflufenican, posing a high risk for algae and fish, and the insecticide chlorpyrifos, with a high risk for Daphnia magna and fish. The ∑TUi determined for water at each sampling point posed only a high risk for the three aquatic organisms in a sample. These results are important for considering the selection of pesticides with less environmental risk in intensive agricultural areas.

The honeybee has economic importance both for the commercial value of bee products and for its role in the pollination of agricultural crops. Despite the fact that the fungicides are widely used in agriculture, studies comparing the effects of this group of pesticides on bees are still scarce. There are many gaps preventing the understanding of bees’ responses to exposure to fungicides, including the influence of the age of the exposed workers. However, this study aimed to compare the effects of residual concentrations of pyraclostrobin on young and old bees of Africanized Apis mellifera. The parameters analyzed were the survival rates, as well as the histopathological and histochemical changes in midgut of orally exposed workers to different sublethal concentrations of this strobilurin fungicide: 0.125 ng a.i./μL (C1), 0.025 ng a.i./μL (C2) e 0.005 ng a.i./μL (C3). The results showed a significant decrease in the longevity only for old bees exposed to the three concentrations of pyraclostrobin. After the five-day exposure period, the fungicide induced sublethal effects in the midgut only from the old bees. These effects were the increase both in cytoplasmic vacuolization of digestive cells and morphological changes in the nests of regenerative cells, which reflected in the higher lesion index of organ for groups C1 and C2. Additionally, there was a reduction in total protein staining in the intestinal epithelium in C1 and C2. At the same exposure period, the midgut of young bees presented only a reduction in the staining of neutral polysaccharides in the group C1. Concluding, old workers are more sensitive to the fungicide than young workers. This study showed different responses according to worker age, which can affect the maintenance of colony health. Future studies should take into account the age of the workers to better understand the effects of fungicides on bees.

Mine tailings are found worldwide and can have significant impacts on ecosystem and human health. In this study, natural vegetation patterns on arsenical (As) gold (Au) mine tailings located in Sudbury, Ontario were assessed using transects located at the edge of the tailings and on the tailings. Vegetation communities were significantly different between the edge and open tailings areas of the site. Arsenic concentrations in both areas were extremely variable (from 285-17,567 mg/kg) but were not significantly correlated with vegetation diversity at the site. Nutrients (carbon (C), phosphorus (P)) and organic matter concentrations were associated with higher diversity and with the presence of climax vegetation on the tailings, but there were no significant relationships between tailings chemistry and vegetation indices on the edge. Encroachment onto the tailings from the edge occurred in conventional succession patterns, with a clear gradient from grasses (Agrostis gigantea) to trees such as Picea glauca. On the tailings, a nucleation pattern was visible, distinct from conventional succession. Trees and shrubs such as Betula papyrifera and Diervilla lonicera were associated with higher diversity and higher nutrient concentrations in the underlying tailings, whereas grasses such as A. gigantea were not. We concluded that at all areas of the site, vegetation - particularly trees - was facilitating amelioration of the underlying tailings. Despite high concentrations of As, nutrients appeared to have a greater influence than metals on vegetation diversity.

The current global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been a tremendous public health challenge globally. While the respiratory transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has been established, evolving reports on the impact of the gastrointestinal system and the prolonged faecal shedding of SARS-CoV-2 show the likelihood of faecally mediated transmission. The increasing evidential presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and faecal material poses a significant public health threat which may potentiate global vulnerability to high risk of human exposure through environmental drivers especially in less developed countries. While extensively exploring the likelihood of faecally mediated SARS-CoV-2 transmission, infection control and prevention measures aimed at mitigating this pandemic should holistically include environmental drivers.

Rice is the world’s most consumed and in-demand grain. Ecuador is one of the main rice-consuming countries in Latin America, with an average per capita consumption of 53.2 kg per year. Rice cultivation takes place under flooding conditions, which favors the mobilization and subsequent accumulation of heavy metals in the plant. This study’s principal objective was to evaluate the contamination of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the rice cultivation system in the province of Guayas. To this end, extensive sampling of water, soil and rice grains was carried. Water samples were analyzed to determine physicochemical properties and concentrations of dissolved Cd and Pb. Physicochemical properties, total organic carbon (TOC), total content of nitrogen (N), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), bioavailable phosphorus (P mehlich), Cd and Pb were determined in soil samples. In addition, to understand the dynamics of Cd and Pb mobility and bioavailability, an extraction of six randomly selected soil samples was carried out. The concentration values of the total Cd and Pb content in the rice cultivation system did not exceed the maximum recommended limit for soil, water and rice grains. However, 85% of the total Cd was in the soluble or exchangeable fraction of the soil, while the Pb was strongly bound to crystalline iron oxyhydroxides. It was established that the TOC, N, Fe, and P mehlich have a significant correlation (p < 0.05) with the overall concentration of Cd and Pb in the rice farming soil. The Cd and Pb present in rice do not represent a dietary health risk to the population of Ecuador.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil becomes increasingly prominent in recent years, which endangers the safe production of food crops. Cd-tolerant endophytes are ideal mediators for decreasing Cd content in rice plants, but their effects on the rice endophytic microbial community and gene expression profile have not yet been well elucidated. In this study, 58 endophytic bacteria from rice seeds were isolated and characterized. Five strains of them were selected based on their potential growth-promoting traits and strong Cd tolerance that could grow well under 4 mM Cd²⁺. By 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) identification, these five strains were designated as Enterobacter tabaci R2-7, Pantoea agglomerans R3-3, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia R5-5, Sphingomonas sanguinis R7-3 and Enterobacter tabaci R3-2. Pot experiments in relieving Cd stress in rice plants showed that the S. maltophilia R5-5 performed the strongest potential for reducing the Cd content in root and blade by 81.33% and 77.78%, respectively. The endophytic microbial community diversity, richness and composition were significantly altered in S. maltophilia R5-5 inoculated rice plants. Reverse-transcription qPCR (RT-qPCR) showed that the expression of Cd transporters, OsNramp5 and OsHMA2, were down-regulated in S. maltophilia R5-5-innoculated rice roots. The results indicate that the inoculation of endophytic bacteria S. maltophilia R5-5 provides a reference for alleviating the heavy metal contamination in paddy fields and can be a better alternative for guaranteeing the safe production of crops. Changes in the relative abundance of Cd-resistant microorganisms and the expression of Cd transporters might be the intrinsic factors affecting cadmium content in rice.

Ramachandran, S. | Rupakheti, M.
This study reports comprehensive analysis of seasonal and inter-annual variations of aerosol properties (optical, physical and chemical) and radiative effects over Pokhara Valley in the foothills of central Himalayas in Nepal utilizing the high-quality multi-year columnar aerosol data observed recently from January 2010 to December 2017. This paper focusses on the seasonal and inter-annual variations of chemical (composition), and absorption properties of aerosols and their radiative effects. The single scattering albedo (SSA) either decreases as a function of wavelength or remains independent of wavelength. The seasonal mean aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) exhibits a behavior opposite to that of SSA. Carbonaceous aerosols (CA) dominate (≥60%) aerosol absorption during the whole year. Black carbon (BC) alone contributes >60% to AAODCA while brown carbon (BrC) shares the rest. The absorbing aerosol types are determined to be BC, and mixed (BC and dust) only. Dust as absorbing aerosol type is absent over the Himalayan foothills. The ARFSFC is ≥ -50 Wm⁻² except in monsoon almost every year. The ARFATM is ≥ 50 Wm⁻² during winter and pre-monsoon in all the years. ARFESFC, ARFETOA and ARFEATM follow a similar pattern as that of ARF. High values of ARFE at SFC, TOA and ATM (except during monsoon when values are slightly lower) suggest that aerosols are efficient in significantly modulating the incoming solar flux throughout the year. The annual average aerosol-induced atmospheric heating rate (HR) over Pokhara is nearly 1 K day⁻¹ every year during 8-year observation, and is highest in 2015 (∼2.5 K day⁻¹). The HR is about 1 K day⁻¹ or more over all the locations in IGP during the year. These quantitative results can be used as inputs in global/regional climate models to assess the climate impact of aerosols, including on regional temperature, hydrological cycle and melting of glaciers and snowfields in the region.

The aim of the research was to study short-term variations in concentrations of 17 elements in two widely distributed natural plant species (couch grass and plantain) and in the rhizosphere soil of the plants. The plant and soil samples were collected in a field from a small site over a daytime. In the course of the day, the variations of the total amounts of C, N, and H in the rhizosphere soil were rather marked and different for the soils taken from roots of plantain and couch grass. The concentrations of some other elements in the rhizosphere soil of the plants varied in a similar way. The short-term variations of element concentrations in roots and leaves of the plants were also rather large. In many cases, a decrease of element concentration in roots correlated with an increase of its concentration in leaves. Although couch grass and plantain were collected simultaneously and from the same site, mean concentrations of many elements in the two plant species were statistically significantly different. This may be result of the fact that the plants belong to different clades. The differences between concentrations of most part of elements in roots and leaves of the plants were also statistically significant. The concentrations of many trace elements were higher in roots than in leaves, while the concentrations of essential plant nutrients were often higher in leaves compared to roots. The distribution of elements between different plant parts were not the same in couch grass and plantain.

Natural media such as soil and sediment contain mineralogical and organic components with distinct chemical, surface, and electrostatic properties. To better understand the role of various soil and sediment components on particle transport, columns were packed with quartz sand and natural sediment with added Fe oxyhydroxide coating, illite clay, and peat moss to investigate how these added components influence nTiO₂ retention and transport in geochemically heterogeneous medium. Results showed that nTiO₂ transport was low at pH 5, attributable to the electrostatic attraction between positively-charged nTiO₂ and negatively-charged medium. While illite did not notably affect nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, Fe oxyhydroxide coating increased nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic repulsion between Fe oxyhydroxide and nTiO₂. Peat moss also increased nTiO₂ transport at pH 5, attributable to the increased DOC concentration, which resulted in higher DOC adsorption to nTiO₂ and intensified electrostatic repulsion between nTiO₂ and the medium. At pH 9, nTiO₂ transport was high due to the electrostatic repulsion between negatively-charged nTiO₂ and medium surfaces. Fe oxyhydroxide coating at pH 9 slightly delayed nTiO₂ transport due to electrostatic attraction, while illite clay and peat moss substantially inhibited nTiO₂ transport via straining/entrapment or electrostatic attraction. Overall, this study demonstrated that pH has a considerable effect on how minerals and organic components of a medium influence nTiO₂ transport. At low pH, electrostatic attraction was the dominant mechanism, therefore, nTiO₂ mobility was low regardless of the differences in mineralogical and organic components. Conversely, nTiO₂ mobility was high at high pH and nTiO₂ retention was dominated by straining/entrapment and sensitive to the mineralogical and organic composition of the medium.

Kim, Leesun | Jeon, Jin-Woo | Son, Ji-Young | Kim, Chul-Su | Ye, Jin | Kim, Ho-Joong | Lee, Chang-Ho | Hwang, Seung-Man | Choi, Sung-Deuk
We investigated the levels and distribution patterns of α- and β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in air, soil, water, and sediment samples collected from the South Korean persistent organic pollutants (POPs) monitoring networks. In the air samples, the highest concentrations of the total (Σ₃) endosulfan (50.3–611 pg/m³, mean: 274 pg/m³) were observed during summer. Spearman analysis revealed a good correlation between agricultural land area and atmospheric concentrations of Σ₃ endosulfan except during winter. Regardless of the season, the ratio of the two isomers (α/β) was 3.6–4.9 in the air samples, higher than that observed in technical mixtures (2.0–2.3), possibly due to the higher volatility of α-endosulfan, compared to β-endosulfan. Concentrations of Σ₃ endosulfan in the soil samples (n.d.−13.4 ng/g, mean: 0.8 ng/g) were not significantly different except at some stations adjacent to large areas of farmland. The average levels of Σ₃ endosulfan in the water and sediment samples were 2.1 ng/L and 0.1 ng/g dw, respectively. In analyzing the four largest rivers, it was observed that a few water stations during spring and fall and sediment stations in fall had high concentrations of the two isomers and endosulfan sulfate, particularly around the Yeoungsan and Nakdong Rivers near large areas of agricultural land. Endosulfan sulfate was dominant at most water and sediment sampling stations. This study demonstrates that the endosulfan found in most environmental compartments most probably derives from agricultural areas despite its ban as a pesticide. On the other hand, given that it was also detected in industrial and urban areas, in which pesticide application does not occur, it can be conjectured that endosulfan is aerially transported at higher temperatures and continuously circulates within the environment.
