An increasing number of epidemiological studies have examined the association between ultrafine particles (UFP) and imbalanced autonomic control of the heart, a potential mechanism linking particulate matter air pollution to cardiovascular disease. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes studies on short-term effects of UFP on autonomic function, as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV). We searched PubMed and Web of Science for articles published until June 30, 2022. We extracted quantitative measures of UFP effects on HRV with a maximum lag of 15 days from single-pollutant models. We assessed the risk of bias in the included studies regarding confounding, selection bias, exposure assessment, outcome measurement, missing data, and selective reporting. Random-effects models were applied to synthesize effect estimates on HRV of various time courses. Twelve studies with altogether 1,337 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. For an increase of 10,000 particles/cm³ in UFP assessed by central outdoor measurements, our meta-analysis showed immediate decreases in the standard deviation of the normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) by 4.0% [95% confidence interval (CI): 7.1%, −0.9%] and root mean square of successive R-R interval differences (RMSSD) by 4.7% (95% CI: 9.1%, 0.0%) within 6 h after exposure. The immediate decreases in SDNN and RMSSD associated with UFP assessed by personal measurements were smaller and borderline significant. Elevated UFP were also associated with decreases in SDNN, low-frequency power, and the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency power when pooling estimates of lags across hours to days. We did not find associations between HRV and concurrent-day UFP exposure (daily average of at least 18 h) or exposure at lags ≥ one day. Our study indicates that short-term exposure to ambient UFP is associated with decreased HRV, predominantly as an immediate response within hours. This finding highlights that UFP may contribute to the onset of cardiovascular events through autonomic dysregulation.

Insufficient evidence exists regarding the effects of microplastics (MPs) on the neuronal toxicity of heavy metals in the early stages of organisms. Herein, the effects of micro-polystyrene (μ-PS; 157 μm) and nano-polystyrene (n-PS; 100 nm) particles on the neurodevelopmental toxicity of mercury (Hg) in zebrafish embryos were compared. Zebrafish embryos exposed to Hg at the concentration of 0.1 mg L⁻¹ revealed blood disorders, delayed hatching, and malformations such as pericardial oedema and tail deformity. The length of the larval head was significantly reduced (P < 0.01) and in vivo expression of atoh1a in the cerebellum of neuron-specific transgenic zebrafish Tg(atoh1a:dTomato) larvae was inhibited by 29.46% under the Hg treatment. Most of the toxic effects were inhibited by the combined exposure to μ-PS or n-PS with Hg, and n-PS decreased the neurodevelopmental toxicity of Hg more significantly than μ-PS. Metabolomic analysis revealed that in addition to inhibiting the amino acid metabolism pathway as in the μ-PS+Hg treatment, the n-PS+Hg treatment inhibited unsaturated fatty acid metabolism in zebrafish larvae, likely because of a greater reduction in Hg bioavailability, thus reducing the oxidative damage caused by Hg in the larvae. The combined effects of MPs and heavy metals differ greatly among different species and their targeted effects. We conclude that the combined toxicity mechanisms of MPs and heavy metals require further clarification.

Organic phosphorus (Pₒ) plays a very important role in the process of lake eutrophication, but there is still a lack of knowledge about the internal cycle of Pₒ in suspended particulate matter (SPM) dominated by algal debris. In this study, the characterization of bioavailable Pₒ by sequential extraction and enzymatic hydrolysis showed that 45% of extracted TP was Pₒ in SPM of Lake Dianchi, and 43–98% of total Pₒ in H₂O, NaHCO₃ and NaOH fractions was enzymatically hydrolyzable Pₒ (EHP, H₂O−EHP: 31–53%). Importantly, labile monoester P was the main organic form (68%) of EHP, and its potential bioavailability was higher than that of diester P and phytate-like P. According to the estimation of P pools in SPM of the whole lake, the total load of Pᵢ plus EHP in the H₂O extract of SPM was 74.9 t and had great potential risk to enhance eutrophication in the lake water environment. Accordingly, reducing the amount of SPM in the water during the algal blooming period is likely to be a necessary measure that can successfully interfere with or block the continuous stress of unhealthy levels of P on the aquatic ecosystem.

The bioaccumulation and biomagnification of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in temperate urban lacustrine ecosystems is poorly understood. We investigated the occurrence and trophic transfer of and probabilistic health risk from 15 PFAAs in the food web of Luoma Lake, a temperate urban lake in East China. The target PFAAs were widely distributed in the water (∑PFAA: 77.09 ± 9.07 ng/L), suspended particulate matter (SPM) (∑PFAA: 284.07 ± 118.05 ng/g dw), and sediment samples (∑PFAA: 67.77 ± 17.96 ng/g dw) and occurred in all biotic samples (∑PFAA: 443.27 ± 124.89 ng/g dw for aquatic plants; 294.99 ± 90.82 for aquatic animals). PFBA was predominant in water and SPM, with 40.11% and 21.35% of the total PFAAs, respectively, while PFOS was the most abundant in sediments (14.11% of the total PFAAs) and organisms (14.33% of the total PFAAs). Sediment exposure may be the major route of biological uptake of PFAAs. The PFAA accumulation capacity was the highest in submerged plants, followed by emergent plants > bivalves > crustaceans > fish > floating plants. Long-chain PFAAs were biomagnified, and short-chain PFAAs were biodiluted across the entire lacustrine food web. PFOS exhibited the greatest bioaccumulation and biomagnification potential among the target PFAAs. However, biomagnification of short-chain PFAAs was also observed within the low trophic-level part of the food web. Human health risk assessment indicated that perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) posed health risks to all age groups, while the other PFAAs were unlikely to cause immediate harm to consumers in the region. This study fills a gap in the knowledge of the transfer of PFAAs in the food webs of temperate urban lakes.

Restoring enzyme function in barren, brownfield soils using green strategies can improve microbial functioning and enable phytoremediation. It is known that adding simple, readily metabolized substrates secreted by growing plant roots (root exudates) or a laboratory prepared solution of root exudates (artificial root exudates) can stimulate soil microbial function. It is not known whether and how well this strategy works in a contaminated, low functioning soil from an industrial barren site because contaminants in the barren soil might inhibit microbial survival and functioning, or the microbial community might not be adapted to functionally benefit from root exudates. The objective of this study was to determine whether artificial root exudates stimulate microbial function in a barren soil. We collected soils from a barren brownfield (25R) site and an adjacent vegetated brownfield site (25F), with low and high enzyme activities, respectively. We subjected both soils to three treatments: switchgrass (native to the site), artificial root exudates, and a combination of switchgrass and artificial root exudates. We measured enzymatic activity, plant growth, soil moisture, organic matter content, and easily extractable glomalin content over 205 days. By day 157, artificial root exudates increased the phosphatase activity by 9-fold in previously vegetated brownfield soil and by 351-fold in barren brownfield soil. When exudates were added to the barren soil, the plant shoot mass was higher (52.2 ± 2.5 mg) than when they were not (35.4 ± 3.6 mg). In both soils, adding artificial root exudates significantly increased the percent moisture, organic matter, and glomalin content. Treating contaminated, barren soil with artificial root exudates resulted in increased soil microbial function and improved soil properties that might promote a hospitable habitat to support vegetation in such extreme environments. Summary: We added artificial root exudates to stimulate enzymatic function in two contaminated soils. Plant shoot mass, soil percent moisture, glomalin content, and organic matter content significantly increased due to the addition of artificial root exudates to the study soils. Microbially-mediated phosphatase activity was established in a barren, previously inactive, polluted soil.

Mulch film (MF) residues is an important source of microplastics (MPs) in farmland, but its transportation risk to the wider environment was still unknown. Some researches have pursued the sources of MPs found in exorheic rivers. Even so, a systematic study depicting the occurrence, source and fate of microplastics derived from mulch films (MPMF), the crucial component of MPs in farmlands, in exorheic rivers still lacking. Here, the combination of UV–Vis Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to identify the full-size MPMF (1–5000 μm) in field sediment samples collected by single-diagonal systematic sampling. This study verified that MPMF, a polyethylene-matrix composite doped with additives, contributed a considerable part of MPs detected in upstream farmland soil and riverine sediments, and even had an abundance of 38 ± 11 items/kg to 82 ± 15 items/kg, accounting for 9.0%–13.7% of the total MPs in estuary sediments. Notably, upstream farmland was identified to the main source of the riverine MPMF by partial least square path modeling (PLS-PM), contributing to 94.7% of MPMF in riverside sediments and 85.0% of MPMF in estuary sediments. Our study first demonstrates that MPMF constitutes a non-negligible component of MPs in estuarine sediments and underlines the urgency of strengthening the management of MPs pollution in drainage areas with a high agricultural intensity.

Steroid estrogens have been detected in oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwaters, soils, and even urban water supply systems, thereby inevitably imposing serious impacts on human health and ecological safety. Indeed, many estrogen-degrading bacterial strains and degradation pathways have been reported, with the 4,5-seco pathway being particularly important. However, few studies have evaluated the use of the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes to degrade 17β-estradiol (E2). In this study, 5 genes involved in E2 degradation were identified in the Rhodococcus equi DSSKP-R-001 (R-001) genome and then heterologously expressed to confirm their functions. The transformation of E2 with hsd17b14 reached 63.7% within 30 h, resulting in transformation into estrone (E1). Furthermore, we found that At1g12200-encoded flavin-binding monooxygenase (FMOAₜ₁g₁₂₂₀₀) can transform E1 at a rate of 51.6% within 30 h and can transform E1 into 4-hydroxyestrone (4-OH E1). In addition, catA and hsaC genes were identified to further transform 4-OH E1 at a rate of 97–99%, and this reaction was accomplished by C–C cleavage at the C4 position of the A ring of 4-OH E1. This study represents the first report on the roles of these genes in estrogen degradation and provides new insights into the mechanisms of microbial estrogen metabolism and a better understanding of E2 degradation via the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes.

Serious environmental pollution of heavy metals has attracted people's attention in recent years and halophiles seem to be potential bioremediation in the controlling of heavy metals contamination. In this study, the adaptive mechanism of halophilic Brachybacterium muris (B. muris) in response to salt stress and its mitigation of copper (Cu) toxicity in hydroponic plants were investigated. The cell morphology was observed using transmission electron microscopy. The cell membrane composition and fluidity were examined by the combination of gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and fluorescence spectrophotometry. Moreover, the metabolic pathways of B. muris in response to salt stress were analyzed using the prokaryotic transcriptomics approach. A hydroponic co-culture model was further conducted to explore the effects of B. muris on wheat seedlings subjected to Cu toxicity. It was found that B. muris can respond to high osmotic pressure by improving the cell membrane fluidity, altering the cell morphology and cell membrane compositions. The proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol in B. muris cell membranes increased significantly, while zymosterol, fecosterol, and ergosterol contents decreased under a high salinity situation. Further transcriptomic analysis showed that genes encoding L-glutamate synthase, glutamate ABC transporter ATP-binding protein, and sodium cotransporter were up-regulated, indicating that both the synthesis and transport of glutamate were significantly enhanced under high osmotic pressure. Additionally, B. muris alleviated the inhibitory effect of Cu²⁺ on wheat seedlings' growth, causing a 30.14% decrease in H₂O₂ content and a significant increase of 83.86% and 45.96% in POD activity and GSH content in wheat roots, respectively. The findings of this study suggested that the salt-tolerant B. muris may serve as a promising strategy for improving the bioremediation of metal-contaminated saline water and soils.

The bioavailability of chromium (Cr) in soils is highly dependent on Cr fractions and soil physicochemical properties, but it is still unclear how the Cr fractions change in different soils. In this study, phytotoxicity to wheat root elongation was evaluated in different soils across China, and the kinetics of the biogeochemical processes of the added Cr(VI) were examined. After 105 days of soil Cr(VI) spiking, the added Cr(VI) causing 10% inhibition (EC₁₀) of wheat root elongation varied greatly in soils (0.92–151.12 mg kg⁻¹). The results of correlation analysis between EC₁₀ and soil properties showed that the toxicity of Cr was affected by pH, organic matter (OM), clay, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and amorphous Fe oxides. Moreover, the correlation analysis showed that wheat root elongation was more sensitive to extracted Cr(VI) than Cr(III) after 105 days of incubation. A kinetic model was established to evaluate the redox and aging-activating reactions of Cr(VI)/(III) over 105 days. The correlation analysis between the soil properties and rate constants of the model showed that the pH, clay, and amorphous Fe/Al oxides might be the key factors controlling the aging and reduction processes of Cr(VI), and the OM and CEC might greatly affect the aging process of Cr(III). This modeling study is helpful in understanding which soil properties control the transformation and toxicity of Cr in soils.

Nigra, Anne E. | Cazacu-De Luca, Adina | Navas-Acien, Ana
Inorganic arsenic is a known human carcinogen and is routinely detected in US community water systems (CWSs). Inequalities in CWS arsenic exist across broad sociodemographic subgroups. Our objective was to evaluate the county-level association between socioeconomic vulnerability and CWS arsenic concentrations across the US. We evaluated previously developed, population-weighted CWS arsenic concentrations (2006–2011) and three socioeconomic domains (the proportion of adults with a high school diploma, median household income, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's overall socioeconomic vulnerability score) for 2,604 conterminous US counties. We used spatial lag models and evaluated the adjusted geometric mean ratio (GMR) of CWS arsenic concentrations per higher socioeconomic domain score corresponding to the interquartile range, and also evaluated flexible quadratic spline models. We also stratified by region and by United States Department of Agriculture Rural-Urban Continuum Codes to assess potential effect measure modification by region and rurality. Associations between socioeconomic vulnerability and CWS arsenic were modified by region and rurality and specific to socioeconomic domain. The fully adjusted GMR (95% CIs) of CWS arsenic per interquartile range higher proportion of adults with a high school education was 0.83 (0.71, 0.98) in the Southwest (corresponding to 17% lower arsenic with higher education), 0.82 (0.71, 0.94) in the Eastern Midwest (18% lower), and 0.65 (0.31, 1.36) in New England (35% lower). Associations between median household income and CWS arsenic were largely null. Higher overall socioeconomic vulnerability was significantly associated with lower CWS arsenic, but only in counties in the Central Midwest and those with total populations less than 20,000. Findings may reflect regional/local differences in both socioeconomic/socio-cultural context and public drinking water regulatory efforts. Across the US, individual domains of socioeconomic vulnerability (especially educational attainment) are more strongly associated with inequalities in CWS arsenic than the complex overall socioeconomic vulnerability index.
