Seasonal variation of dissolved organic matter in the upper reaches of Nevezis River in middle Lithuania

The pollution of the river water with organic matter deteriorates the chemical, biological and microbiological quality of the water and has a negative effect upon the biological variety of the water environment. The paper analyses the study period (1996-2000) seasonal change of organic matter in the upper reaches of the River Nevezis (study sites upstream and downstream Panevezys). The highest amount of organic matter (according to chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand) got into the river under the influence of concentrated pollution, the fewer amount - under the influence of agricultural pollution and in the course of natural processes. The concentration of organic substances in the river water had a seasonal character: rivers with a better ecological state (the Juosta) were more polluted with organic matter in spring, when water temperature was below 10 deg C, but rivers with a worse ecological state (the Nevezis upstream and downstream Panevezys) – in summer (water temperature was higher than 10 deg C). This may be related with fresh pollution; in the former case organic matter might have come from the environment together with the runoff, in the latter case - due to decomposition of water vegetation and fauna residues in the river itself. In all rivers water temperature was by 0.1-4.4 deg C higher in 1996-2000 in comparison to that in 1986-1989, a significant temperature increases were observed in winter and autumn. The water temperature arose mostly below the town.

Three spectrophotometric methods were compared for the assessment of milk fat oxidation: the AOCS (American Oil Chemists' Society) 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value direct method, the TBA method of Aristova, and the modified method for the estimation of total carbonyl compounds in oils of Endo et al. Two cow milk fat samples – a fresh fat, obtained from fresh milk, and a rancid fat, obtained from a rancid commercial butter by means of high-speed centrifugation (15.871 × g, 30 minutes at 40 deg C) – were analyzed several times in a 22-day period after sample preparation. A positive linear correlation between absorbance and storage time was established in all used methods. The method of Aristova is appropriate for exact determination of oxidation products. This method had rather good R2 value (0.85) of the fresh fat sample results; however, the coefficient of variation (45.78%) showed rather large deviations between parallel analyses. The methods of AOCS and Endo et al. can be used for the assessment of the dynamics of fat oxidation by reporting absorbance values from the assay directly. By these methods rather high R2 values (0.86, 0.93) of the fresh fat sample results were obtained; the coefficients of variation also were satisfactory (10.13%, 11.12%). The last two methods are cheaper and require smaller sample amounts (less than 0.2 g), while the method of AOCS is the most time-consuming method.

In modern life oxidative stress has a serious effect on human health; therefore, natural antioxidants play an important role in human well-being. Hen (Gallus gallus domesticus) eggs can be effectively enriched with selenium and vitamin E and can be used as a source of natural antioxidants. The objective of this study was to determine the interaction of selenium and vitamin E in eggs and egg yolk oil. Two groups of Lohman Brown-Classic breed laying hens from a real production facility were taken as an experimental object. The basal diet was the same for both groups and content 25 mg kgE-1 of vitamin E added. 0.2 mg kgE-1 of sodium selenite was used as an inorganic source of selenium in feed for one hen group and 0.3 mg kgE-1 of organic selenium in the selenized yeast form for the other group. The selenium content was determined in eggs, egg yolk, egg white and egg yolk oil samples and vitamin E content in egg yolks and egg yolk oil. The results of this study indicate that there is no difference in selenium content in eggs from inorganic and organic selenium hen diet taking into account that selenium content in feed was different. The majority of selenium is located in egg yolk, but there was no selenium detected in egg yolk oil. Vitamin E content in egg yolks was not affected by the source of selenium (p is less than 0.05). High vitamin E content in egg yolk oil effectively protects egg yolk oil from oxidation during storage.

The quality and nutritional value of milk and dairy products are considerably influenced by the stability of its constituents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of enhancing oxidative stability of cow’s milk fat and vitamin B2 using carrots and palm oil feed supplement CAF 100 as sources of natural antioxidants in cow feed. Milk samples were collected after 25-day period of feed supplementation. The intensity of riboflavin losses during its photo oxidative degradation in sunlight was measured by the fluorometric method. A slight and significant (p is less than 0.05) difference in higher vitamin B2 stability was seen in carrot-supplemented group (TG1) milk, where the losses of vitamin B2 were by 3.01% less compared to CG (CG). The oxidative stability of butter oil samples stored in 60 °C temperature was analyzed by peroxide value (PV) method. The oxidative stability of samples initially affected by light from both trial groups was significantly (p is less than 0.05) higher compared to CG showing the good potential of the cow diet enrichment with carotenoid additives. The longest induction period (larger than 14 days) was observed in CAF-100- supplemented (TG2) cow milk fats, which can be explained by carotenoids and tocopherol presence and its possible synergism in fat protection. The induction periods of the TG1 and CG were 12.03 and 10.97 days, respectively.

Lactobionic acid is a high value added compound industrially produced through energy intensive chemical synthesis, which uses costly metal catalysts, like gold and platinum. In the next years, biotechnological production of lactobionic acid can be supposed to take the full transition to the manufacturing stage. Productivity of lactobionic acid by microbial production can be affected by various factors – choice of microorganism and its concentration, supply of oxygen, temperature, substrate, cultivation method, pH and aeration rate. The aim was to review research findings for lactobionic acid production as well innovative and efficient technology solutions for self-costs reducing. Whey was recommended as a cheap and suitable substrate for the lactobionic acid production. Whey processing has been advised with Pseudonomas teatrolens in 28 °C and in pH 6 to 7 for yielding the highest productivity. The increasing commercial importance urges the progression of schemes for lactobionic acid biotechnological manufacturing.

The dynamic of rapeseed oil oxidizing processes under the influence of light in brown glass, colourless glass, and colourless PET bottles during storage at 18+-2 deg C were investigated. The changes in A and E vitamins content in rapeseed oil packed in colourless PET packaging materials were determined after 4 months storage at 18+-2 deg C at daylight. The connection between different packaging materials' transparency and oxidizing of oil were observed.
