This work studies the influence of the roasting process on sorption isotherms of almond, hazelnut and peanut over the normal range of storage temperatures (5, 25 and 45 °C) The results obtained showed that water sorption properties of unroasted nuts are affected by fat content. The mono layer moisture content and water affinity (sorption heat, Qₛ) increased when the nut fat content decreased. After roasting, a more homogeneous water affinity was observed for the different products, although fat content still affected the monolayer capacity. Also, roasting reduced mono layer moisture content and Qₛ values in each sample and made the moisturizing process less spontaneous (decreasing the thermodynamic driving force). These results are consistent with an increase of the hydrophobicity of the cellular components of nuts due to the enhancement of lipid interactions. The water binding properties of active points in the roasted products were reduced and, hence, some water sorption active points disappeared.

Endotherms dissipate heat to the environment to maintain a stable body temperature at high ambient temperatures, which requires them to maintain a balance between heat dissipation and water conservation. Birds are relatively small, contain a large amount of metabolically expensive tissue, and are mostly diurnal, making them susceptible to physiological challenges related to water balance and heat dissipation. We compiled total evaporative water loss (TEWL) measurements for 174 species of birds exposed to different temperatures and used comparative methods to examine their relationships with body size, ambient temperature, precipitation, diet, and diel activity cycle. TEWL in the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) was associated primarily with body mass and activity phase. Larger and more active-phase birds, with their higher metabolic rates, lost more water through evaporation than smaller, resting-phase birds, particularly at higher thermal exposures. However, maximum temperature of the natural habitat became an important determinant of TEWL when birds were exposed to temperatures exceeding the TNZ. Species from hotter climates exhibited higher TEWL. Adaptation to arid climates did not restrict evaporative water loss at thermal conditions within the TNZ, but promoted evaporative water loss at exposures above the TNZ. The TEWL of granivores, which ingest food with low water content, differed little from species with other food habitats under all thermal conditions. The effects of environmental covariates of TEWL were dissimilar across thermal exposures, suggesting no evidence for a tradeoff between water conservation in the TNZ and heat dissipation at exposure to higher temperatures. Thus, birds may be able to acclimate when climate change results in the need to increase heat dissipation due to warming, except perhaps in hot, arid environments where species will need to depend heavily upon evaporative cooling to maintain homeothermy.

In the state of Mato Grosso, the area planted with cotton is mainly concentrated in the plains, where the climate Aw determines an alternation between a rainy and a dry season, and where the soil is predominant Red-Yellow Latosol and Red Latosol (Oxisol). One of the factors that determine success in cultivation of this species is just the prior knowledge of the hydraulic properties of soils which, for various reasons, are not variables of extensive knowledge in the areas of production. This study aimed to verify the adequacy of pedotransfer functions to evaluate the soil water retention capacity in the cotton regions in Mato Grosso, taking into account the bulk density and content of clay, silt and sand soil. For this, soil samples were collected in 21 plots of commercial production of cotton in the state of Mato Grosso to determinate the particle size distribution, bulk density, and water retention curve in soil. In the region of cotton production in Mato Grosso, the pedotransfer functions, 0,334 - 0,0003 Ar and 0,247 - 0,0003 Ar, for estimating the water content in the tensions of 0.033 and 1.5 MPa, respectively, are suitable to evaluate the water retention capacity of the soils of the cotton production plots in this state.

This paper describes a technique that retrieves soil moisture from monopolarized SAR data. The technique uses SAR data obtained by the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) and two empirical models. One relates the backscatter coefficient with the complex permitivity (Dubois's model), and the other relates the complex permitivity with soil parameters such as soil moisture (Hallikainen's model). First, the SAR data were calibrated to obtain the backscatter coefficient and the Dubois's model was inverted to achieve the complex permitivity. The insertion of estimated values of roughness was necessary to use the inverted equation with JERS-1 SAR data. Using these results and the Hallikainen's model, the soil moisture was calculated and compared with field measurements. The results were found to be moderately accurate and the inverted models were quite sensitive to the precision of the estimated values of roughness.

Initial soil conditions, operational aspects, and tool shape affect the efficiency of soil decompaction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a winged scarifier as a function of soil compaction and edaphic water content. The experiment was carried out in a typical Hapludoll. Treatments considered two soil compaction levels: high (HC) and low compaction (LC); and three soil water contents: wet (WS), humid (HS), and dry (DS) with 9, 14, and 19% gravimetric water content, respectively. A split-plot randomized block design was applied. Tractive effort, disturbed area, tillage depth, specific resistance, and power were evaluated. Results showed that tractive effort was 17% greater in HC than LC, and in both cases HS was greater than WS and DS. The specific resistance in HC was equal to 8, 9, and 11 N cm-2 in WS, HS, and DS, respectively, and 7, 8, and 7 N cm-2 in BC in similar soil water contents, respectively. Tillage depth was low and irregular only in HC-DS. Specific resistance was not an adequate indicator of overall work efficiency because it does not consider the final soil physical profile. Overall work efficiency in HC was greater under HS conditions, while in LC it was greater under HS and DS conditions.

The clay fraction mineralogy and the granular structure of Oxisols in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) are the reason for the great volume of large pores as well as of extremely small pores, but no significant medium pore volume, resulting in low available water for plants. This study aimed to characterize and model the behavior of water retention in Oxisols with different texture classes of the Cerrado region. Samples were collected from the Bw horizon of 10 Oxisols under native vegetation. Water retention was measured at matric potentials of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 kPa using a Richards plate, and the water retained in potentials of 1.500 and 300.000 kPa determined by a thermocouple psychrometer model WP4-T Dewpoint Potentia Meter. The double van Genuchten model was proposed to fit the experimental water retention data by non-linear fitting using software R 2.10.1. The relationship between the estimated model parameters and the inflection point with soil texture properties was evaluated also by the Pearson correlation test. Results indicated good fitting of the model and great prediction power and correlation between the soil clay content and equation parameters (Usat, Upmp, Ures), as well as with the slope of the second inflection point (Itex). Oxisol texture influenced the behavior of water retention curves. The water retention curves of Oxisols were bimodal in the studied range of water potential.

A field experiment was carried out in southern Xinjiang, China, to reveal soil-water flow pattern beneath a combined plastic-mulch (film) and drip-irrigation system using brackish water. The soil-water flow system (SWFS) was characterized from soil surface to the water table based on observed spatio-temporal distribution of total soil-water potential, water content and electric conductivity. Root suction provided a strong inner sink. The results indicated that SWFS determined the soil salinity and moisture distribution. Drip-irrigation events could leach excess salts from the root zone and provide soil conditions with a tolerable salinity level that supports the growth of cotton. High-salinity strips were formed along the wetting front and at the bare soil surface. Hydrogeology conditions, irrigation regime, climate, plant growth and use of mulch would affect potential sources and sinks, boundary conditions and the size of the SWFS. At depth 0–60 cm, the soil salinity at the end of the irrigation season was 1.9 times that at the beginning. Beneath the mulch cover, the soil-water content in the ‘wide rows’ zone (55 cm between the two rows with no drip line) was higher than that in the ‘narrow rows’ zone (15 cm between the two rows with a drip line) due to the strong root-water uptake. The downward water flow below the divergent curved surface of zero flux before irrigation, and the water-table fluctuation with irrigation events, indicated that excessive irrigation occurred.

Water and salt migration properties are important in many disciplines, including engineering construction, natural disaster prevention, agricultural irrigation and wastewater disposal. Relevant research into unsaturated loess caters to the development needs of the cities located on it. The objective of this study is to identify the water flow dynamics and consequent salt migration and redistribution (as well as their influence on microstructure alteration of the soil) during long-term seepage in unsaturated loess. In this experimental study, a long-term and one-dimensional seepage simulation test is conducted in a loess column. Probes are buried at different depths along the vertical profile to monitor and record the variations of volume water content and electrical conductivity. After the seepage test, soils at different depths are analyzed with different methods to make further investigation, including use of a pressure-plate apparatus to obtain soil-water characteristic curves, ion chromatography to determine the soluble salt components, and scanning electron microscopy to observe the microstructure changes. Good consistency between the different tests is obtained. Based on those results, the water and salt migration patterns and their influence on loess are analyzed and concluded.
