Capital costs and operating costs are assessed associated with food irradiation. Estimates are given of the total energy requirements for irradiation and for other food processes, such as packaging, storage and transport. The benefits are described of food irradiation including product quality improvement, preservation efficiency, cost reduction, and market enlargement
