OBJECTIVE To compare intraosseous pentobarbital treatment (IPT) and thoracic compression (TC) on time to circulatory arrest and an isoelectric electroencephalogram (EEG) in anesthetized passerine birds. ANIMALS 30 wild-caught adult birds (17 house sparrows [Passer domesticus] and 13 European starlings [Sturnus vulgaris]). PROCEDURES Birds were assigned to receive IPT or TC (n = 6/species/group). Birds were anesthetized, and carotid arterial pulses were monitored by Doppler methodology. Five subdermal braided-wire electrodes were used for EEG. Anesthetic depth was adjusted until a continuous EEG pattern was maintained, then euthanasia was performed. Times from initiation of euthanasia to cessation of carotid pulse and irreversible isoelectric EEG (indicators of death) were measured. Data (medians and first to third quartiles) were summarized and compared between groups within species. Necropsies were performed for all birds included in experiments and for another 6 birds euthanized under anesthesia by TC (4 sparrows and 1 starling) or IPT (1 sparrow). RESULTS Median time to isoelectric EEG did not differ significantly between treatment groups for sparrows (19.0 and 6.0 seconds for TC and IPT, respectively) or starlings (88.5 and 77.5 seconds for TC and IPT, respectively). Median times to cessation of pulse were significantly shorter for TC than for IPT in sparrows (0.0 vs 18.5 seconds) and starlings (9.5 vs 151.0 seconds). On necropsy, most (14/17) birds that underwent TC had grossly visible coelomic, pericardial, or perihepatic hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggested that TC might be an efficient euthanasia method for small birds. Digital pressure directly over the heart during TC obstructed venous return, causing rapid circulatory arrest, with rupture of the atria or vena cava in several birds. The authors propose that cardiac compression is a more accurate description than TC for this procedure.

Objective- To describe the optimal thoracoscopic approach to the bovine pleural cavity and evaluate the short-term effects of thoracoscopy on cardiovascular and pulmonary function of healthy cattle. Sample- 6 healthy adult Holstein cows (12 hemithoraxes). Procedures- For each cow, thoracoscopy was performed in both the left and right hemithoraxes with a 24-hour interval between procedures. Cows were sedated and restrained in a standing position for each thoracoscopic examination. Examination of each hemithorax lasted for 30 minutes. Arterial blood gas variables, heart rate, and respiratory rate were assessed at predetermined times before, during, and after the procedures to monitor cardiovascular and pulmonary function. Thoracic ultrasonography was performed immediately and at 24 hours and 1 week after each thorascopic examination to evaluate the extent of residual pneumothorax. Results- Insertion of the laparoscope into the pleural cavity at the ninth intercostal space 15 cm ventral to the transverse processes of the thoracic vertebrae provided optimal visibility of structures in both the left and right hemithoraxes. Most structures of the pleural cavity were equally visible from both sides except the esophagus and the dorsal branch of the vagus nerve, which were best observed in the left hemithorax, and the pericardium, which was best observed in the right hemithorax. Mild increases in heart and respiratory rates and moderate decreases in arterial oxygen saturation and Pao2 were detected during the procedures. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Standing thoracoscopy was well tolerated in healthy adult dairy cattle and needs to be evaluated in cattle with pulmonary disease.

Magnesium(Mg2+) is one of the most abundant intracellular divalent cation. Although recent studies demonstrate that adrenergic receptor stimulation evokes marked changes in Mg2+ homeostasis, the regulation of Mg2+ by dopaminergic receptor stimulation is not yet known. In this work, we uwed dopaminergic agents to identify which type(s) of receptors were involved inthe mobilization of Mg2+ by dopaminergic receptor stimulation in the perfused rat gearts, isolated myocytes and circulating blood. The mg2+ content was measured by atomic absorbance spedtrophotometry. Dopamine(DA), apomorphine(APO) and pergolide stimulated Mg2+ efflux in the perfused rat hearts and these effects were inhibited by haloperidol or fluphenazine, nonselective dopaminergic antagonists. SKF38393, a selective doparminergic agonist, increased Mg2+ efflux from the perfused hearts in dose dependant manners and SKF38393-induced Mg2+ efflux was potentiated in the presence of sulpiride or eticlopride, D2-selective antagonist, from the perfused hearts. This increase of Mg2+ efflux was blocked by haloperidol or imipramine. DA or pergolide increased in circulating Mg2+ from blood. By contrast, PPHT stimulated Mg2+ influx(a decrease in efflux) from the perfused hearts and circulating blood. PPHT-induced Mg2+ influx was blocked by fluphenazine in the perfused hearts. DA-stimulated Mg2+ efflux was inhibited by dopaminergic antagoinst in the isolated myocytes. In conclusion, the flux of Mg2+ is modulated by DA receptor activation in the rat hearts. The efflux of Mg2+ can be increased by D1-receptor stimulation and decreased by D2-receptor stimulation, respectively.

In this study ELISA was standardized for detecting antibodies against Hydropericardium Syndrome Virus. Factors like Antigen, Conjugate and incubation time were studied. Standardization was carried out by checker board titration method. Optimum incubation time for colour development was found to be 15 minutes while 50 mug/ml of antigen gave better results than 100 mug/ml. The conjugate dilution of 1:500 was observed to give satisfactory results as determined by regression analysis. Cut off value was determined by adding 2SDs and 3SDs in the mean optical density (OD) values of negative serum samples. It was found that mean OD+2SD (0.0684) resulted in better diagnostic sensitivity) and diagnostic specificity than mean OD+3SDs (0.0741).
