International audience | Gentle remediation options (GRO) are based on the combined use of plants, associated microorganisms and soil amendments, which can potentially restore soil functions and quality. We studied the effects of three GRO (aided-phytostabilisation, in situ stabilisation and phytoexclusion, and aided-phytoextraction) on the soil microbial biomass and respiration, the activities of hydrolase enzymes involved in the biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P, and S, and bacterial community structure of trace element contaminated soils (TECS) from six field trials across Europe. Community structure was studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting of Bacteria, α- and β-Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Streptomycetaceae, and sequencing of DGGE bands characteristic of specific treatments. The number of copies of genes involved in ammonia oxidation and denitrification were determined by qPCR. Phytomanagement increased soil microbial biomass at three sites and respiration at the Biogeco site (France). Enzyme activities were consistently higher in treated soils compared to untreated soils at the Biogeco site. At this site, microbial biomass increased from 696 to 2352 mg ATP kg-1 soil, respiration increased from 7.4 to 40.1 mg C-CO2 kg-1 soil d-1, and enzyme activities were 2-11-fold higher in treated soils compared to untreated soil. Phytomanagement induced shifts in the bacterial community structure at both, the total community and functional group levels, and generally increased the number of copies of genes involved in the N cycle (nirK, nirS, nosZ, and amoA). The influence of the main soil physico-chemical properties and trace element availability were assessed and eventual site-specific effects elucidated. Overall, our results demonstrate that phytomanagement of TECS influences soil biological activity in the long term.

Unplanned urbanization and heavy automobile use by the rapidly growing population contribute to a variety of environmental issues. Roadside plants can mitigate air pollution by modifying their enzymatic activity, physiological and anatomical traits. Plant enzymes, physiological and anatomical traits play an important role in adaptation and mitigation mechanisms against vehicular emissions. There is a significant gap in understanding of how plant enzymes and anatomical traits respond or how they participate in modulating the effect of vehicular emissions/air pollution. Modulation of leaf anatomical traits is also useful in regulating plant physiological behavior. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vehicular pollution on the enzymatic activity, physiological, and anatomical traits of plant species that grow in forests (S1) and alongside roads (S2-1 km away from the S1 site) during different seasons. The present study examines four commonly found roadside tree species i.e. Grevillea robusta, Cassia fistula, Quercus leucotrichophora and Cornus oblonga. The study found that the activities of catalase and phenylalanine ammonium enzymes were higher in G. robusta species of roadside than control site (S1). Non-enzymatic antioxidants such as flavonoid and phenol were also found in higher concentrations in roadside tree species during the summer season. However, the measured values of physiological traits were higher in Q. leucotrichophora tree species of S1 during the summer season. When compared to the other species along the roadside, Q. leucotrichophora had the highest number of stomata and epidermal cells during the summer season. Hence, we found that tree species grown along the roadside adapted towards vehicular emissions by modulating their enzymatic, physiological, and anatomical traits to mitigate the effect of air pollution.

Soil fumigants aim to control soil-borne diseases below levels that affect economic crop production, but their use also reduces the abundance of beneficial microorganisms. Previous studies have shown that adding various types of fertilizers to soil after fumigation can reshape the soil microbial community and regulate crop growth. We fumigated soil with dazomet (DZ) that had been cropped continuously for more than 20 years. After fumigation we applied silicon fertilizer, potassium humate organic fertilizer, Bacillus microbial fertilizer or a mixture of the last two. We studied the effects of different fertilizers treatments on the soil's physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, key soil pathogens and beneficial microbes. We found that fertilizers applied after fumigation promoted soil beneficial microorganisms (such as Fimicutes, Chloroflexi, Bacillus and Actinomadura) restoration; increased Fusarium and Phytophthora pathogen mortality, the content of ammonium nitrogen, sucrase enzyme activity; and increased strawberry fruit yield. A significant increase in strawberry yield was positively correlated with increases in beneficial microorganisms such as Gemmatimonadota, Firmicutes, Bacillus and Flavisolibacter. We concluded that organic fertilizer applied after fumigation significantly increased the number of beneficial microorganisms, improved the physicochemical properties of the soil, increased soil enzyme activities, inhibited the growth of soil pathogens to increase strawberry fruit yield. In summary, organic fertilizer activated soil beneficial microorganisms after soil fumigation, promoted soil health, and increased strawberry fruit yield.

The coexistence of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Cd, and Zn poses a serious challenge to soil ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the phytoremediation potential of rice assisted with a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) consortium for the remediation of DEHP, Cd, and Zn co-contaminated soil. The consortium consisted of four bacterial strains, all of which exhibited Cd–Zn resistance and DEHP degradability. The results showed that the rice assisted by the bacterial consortium dissipated 86.1% DEHP while removing 76.0% Cd²⁺ and 92.2% Zn²⁺ from soil within 30 d. The presence of the PGPR consortium promoted plant growth and improved soil enzymatic activity, which may have helped enhance the removal of DEHP and heavy metals from the soil. Moreover, the application of the consortium modified the bacterial community and increased the relative abundance of bacteria related to DEHP degradation (Sphingomonas, Xanthobacteraceae), heavy metal immobilization (Massilia), and soil nutrient cycling (Nitrospira, Vicinamibacterales), which promoted plant growth and the removal of DEHP and heavy metals from soil. Notably, the DEHP and heavy metal contents in rice decreased substantially during the phytoremediation process. Therefore, the PGPR consortium could be beneficial for enhancing the removal of DEHP and heavy metals from the soil, without inducing the accumulation of these pollutants in rice. In general, this study confirmed that the combined use of rice and the PGPR consortium could remedy DEHP and heavy metal co-contaminated soil economically and ecologically without simultaneously posing risks for rice consumption.

With the development of marine oil industry, oil spill accidents will inevitably occur, further polluting the intertidal zone and causing biological poisoning. The muddy intertidal zone and Boleophthalmus pectinirostris were selected as the research objects to conduct indoor acute exposure experiments within 48 h of crude oil pollution. Statistical analysis was used to reveal the activity changes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the gills and liver of mudskipper. Then, integrated biomarker response (IBR) indicators were established to comprehensively evaluate the biological toxicity. The results showed that the activities of SOD, CAT and GST in livers were higher than those in gills, and the maximum induction multipliers of SOD, CAT and GPx in livers appeared earlier than those in gills. Both SOD and GPx activities were induced at low pollutant concentrations and inhibited at high pollutant concentrations. For the dose-effect, the change trends of CAT and SOD were roughly inversed. There was substrate competition between GPx and CAT, with opposite trends over time. The activating mechanism of GST was similar to that of GPx, and the activation time was earlier than that of GPx. In terms of dose-effect trends, the IBR showed that the antioxidant enzymes activities in biological tissues were induced by low and inhibited by high pollutant concentrations. Overall, SOD and GPx in gills and CAT and GST in livers of the mudskippers were suitable as representative markers to comprehensively analyze and evaluate the biotoxicity effects of oil pollution in the intertidal zone. The star plots and IBR values obtained after data standardization were consistent with the enzyme activity differences, which can be used as valid supplementary indexes for biotoxicity evaluation. These research findings provide theoretical support for early indicators of biological toxicity after crude oil pollution in intertidal zones.

The impact of CeO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) on plant physiology and soil microcosm and the underlying mechanism remains unclear to date. This study investigates the effect of CeO₂ NPs on plant growth and soil microbial communities in both the rhizosphere of cucumber seedlings and the surrounding bulk soil, with CeCl₃ as a comparison to identify the contribution of the particulate and ionic form to the phytotoxicity of CeO₂ NPs. The results show that Ce was significantly accumulated in the cucumber tissue after CeO₂ NPs exposure. In the roots, 5.3% of the accumulated Ce has transformed to Ce³⁺. This transformation might take place prior to uptake by the roots since 2.5% of CeO₂ NPs was found transformed in the rhizosphere soil. However, the transformation of CeO₂ NPs in the bulk soil was negligible, indicating the critical role of rhizosphere chemistry in the transformation. CeO₂ NPs treatment induced oxidative stress in the roots, but the biomass of the roots was significantly increased, although the Vitamin C (Vc) content and soluble sugar content were decreased and mineral nutrient contents were altered. The soil enzymatic activity and the microbial community in both rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were altered, with rhizosphere soil showing more prominent changes. CeCl₃ treatment induced similar effects although less than CeO₂ NPs, suggesting that Ce³⁺ released from CeO₂ NPs contributed to the CeO₂ NPs induced impacts on soil health and plant physiology.

The decay of algal biomass and aquatic plants in freshwater lakes leads to the overproduction of autochthonous organic matter (OM) and the exhaustion of dissolved oxygen, impacting the microbial community and subsequent biodegradation of emerging contaminants in sediment. This study explored how the microbial processing of aquatic plant- and algal-derived OM (POM and AOM) mediates 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation in the anoxic sediments of Lake Taihu in China. In four months of microcosm incubations, the increased concentrations of protein-like substances in AOM and POM exhibited temporary activation on microbial metabolic enzyme activity (fluorescein diacetate hydrolase and dehydrogenase) and significantly promoted the carbon mineralization with iron reduction (P < 0.001). These in turn increased the EE2 biodegradation efficiency to 77–90 ng g⁻¹ in the anoxic sediment. However, a higher EE2 biodegradation of 109 ng g⁻¹ was achieved with the humic acid augmentation containing more quinone-like compounds, showing a weaker substrate-priming effect but accelerated redox cycling of iron and organic substrates in the later period of incubation. The microbial analysis further revealed that the quinone-like compounds in OM were more closely associated with microbial electron transfer and strengthened their interspecies syntrophic cooperation favorable to contaminant biodegradation, even though the connective members exposed to protein-like components upregulated more functional genes related to organic carbon and xenobiotics metabolism and biodegradation. Our findings will help predict the fate of estrogens in various sedimentary environments under increasing eutrophication and further climate change scenarios.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the ecotoxicity of typical explosives and their mechanisms in the soil microenvironment. Here, TNT (trinitrotoluene), RDX (cyclotrimethylene trinitramine), and HMX (cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine) were used to simulate the soil pollution of single explosives and their combination. The changes in soil enzyme activity and microbial community structure and function were analyzed in soil, and the effects of explosives exposure on the soil metabolic spectrum were revealed by non-targeted metabonomics. TNT, RDX, and HMX exposure significantly inhibited soil microbial respiration and urease and dehydrogenase activities. Explosives treatment reduced the diversity and richness of the soil microbial community structure, and the microorganisms able to degrade explosives began to occupy the soil niche, with the Sphingomonadaceae, Actinobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria showing significantly increased relative abundances. Non-targeted metabonomics analysis showed that the main soil differential metabolites under explosives stress were lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, with the phosphotransferase system (PTS) pathway the most enriched pathway. The metabolic pathways for carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids in soil were specifically inhibited. Therefore, residues of TNT, RDX, and HMX in the soil could inhibit soil metabolic processes and change the structure of the soil microbial community.

A pot experiment was carried out on brown soil polluted by dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to investigate the effects of biochar (BC) derived from corn straw and Fe–Mn oxide modified biochar composites (FMBC) on the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP, as well as ecosystem responses in rhizosphere soil after wheat ripening. The results indicate that the application of BC and FMBC significantly increases soil organic matter, pH, available nitrogen (AN), Olsen phosphorus, and available potassium (AK); reduces the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP; enhances the activities of dehydrogenase, urease, protease, β-glucosidase, and polyphenol oxidase; and decreases acid phosphatase activity. No changes in richness and diversity, which were measured by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, were observed following BC and FMBC application. The bacterial community structure and composition varied with DBP/DEHP concentrations and BC/FMBC additions in a nonsystematic way and no significant trends were observed. In addition, FMBC exhibited better performance in increasing soil properties and decreasing the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP compared with BC. Hence, the FMBC amendment may be a promising way of developing sustainable agricultural environmental management.

Most chemical plant wastewater contains both organic and inorganic pollutants, which are easy to diffuse along with surface runoff. The combined pollution of nonylphenol (NP) and cadmium (Cd) in soil is a serious problem that has not attracted enough attention. Based on the effects of selenium (Se) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) on plant and soil microbial communities, we speculated that the application of Se and P. aeruginosa in soil could improve the phytoremediation efficiency of ryegrass on contaminated soil. In this study, pot experiments with Cd and NP co-contaminated soil were conducted, and the results showed that application of P. aeruinosa alone could improve the removal rates of NP and Cd by ryegrass, and the supplementary of Se further enhanced the effect of micro-phyto remediation, with the highest removal rates of NP and Cd were 79.6% and 49.4%, respectively. The application of P. aeruginosa plus Se reduced the adsorption of Cd and NP through C–O and Si–O–Fe of the soil, changed the enzyme activity, and also affected the changing trend of the microbial community in soil. Pseudomonas, Sphingomonadales, Nitrospira, and other beneficial bacteria were enriched after a 60-day period with P. aeruginosa and Se treatment, thus promoting the removal of NP and Cd. In light of the above results, we suggest that P. aeruginosa application can efficiently facilitate the phytoremediation of ryegrass on Cd-NP co-contaminated soil, and Se supplementation in soil showed the synergistic effect on the remediation.
