With increasing demand for aquaculture products, water reuse is likely to increase for aquaculture operations around the world. Herein, wastewater stabilization ponds (WSP) represents low cost and sustainable treatment technologies to reduce nutrients and various contaminants of emerging concern from effluent. In the present study, we examined bioaccumulation of selected pharmaceuticals from several therapeutic classes by two important fish species in aquaculture with different feeding preferences (Cyprinus carpio and Sander lucioperca) and their common prey to test whether species specific accumulation occurs. Forty and nineteen from 66 selected pharmaceuticals and their metabolites were positively found in water and sediment samples, respectively from the representative WSP. After a six-month study, which corresponds to aquaculture operations, fourteen pharmaceuticals and their metabolites were detected (at a frequency of higher than 50% of samples) in at least one fish tissue collected from the WSP. We observed striking differences for species and organ specific BAFs among study compounds. Though muscle tissues consistently accumulated lower levels of the target analytes, several substances were elevated in brain, liver and kidney tissues (e.g., sertraline) of both species. Low residual concentrations of these target analytes in aquaculture products (fish fillets) suggest WSPs are promising to support the water-food nexus in aquaculture.

It is very important to explore the potential harm and underlying mechanism of fluoride due to the extensive distribution and the significant health risks of fluoride in environment. The objective of this study to investigate whether fluoride can induce mitochondrial impairment and mitophagy in testicular cells. For this, 40 male mice were randomly divided into four groups treated with 0, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 mM NaF deionized water, respectively, for 90 days continuously. The results showed that mitophagy was triggered by F in testicular tissues, especially in the Leydig cells by transmission electron microscopy and mitophagy receptor PHB2 locations by immunofluorescence. Furthermore, TM3 Leydig cells line was employed and treated with 0, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 mM NaF for 24 h. The mitochondrial function indicators and mitophagy maker PHB2, COX IV and regulator PINK1 in transcript and protein levels in Leydig cells were examined by the methods of qRT-PCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence co-localization. The results showed that fluoride decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential with a concomitant increase in the number of lysosomes. Meanwhile, fluoride exposure also increased the expressions of PINK1 and PHB2 in TM3 Leydig cells. These results revealed that fluoride could induce mitochondrial impairment and excessive PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy in testicular cells, especially in Leydig cells, which could contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of F-induced male reproductive toxicity.

Steroid estrogen residues (SEs) in the soil have attracted growing attention because of their potential for endocrine disruption. Soil organic matter (SOM) and soil remediation agent-biochar, both have important influences on the fate of SEs in the soil environment. This study compared the adsorption of 17β-estradiol (E2) on wheat straw biochar (W-BC) and cow manure biochar (C-BC) with main SOM components including biomacromolecules (cellulose, collagen and lignin) and humic acids (HA). The impact of pyrolysis temperature (350 °C, 550 °C, and 700 °C) on the adsorption capacity of biochar and different concentrations NaClO oxidation on the adsorption capacity of HA were also investigated. The experimental results showed that the adsorption of E2 by biomolecules conformed to the linear isotherm (R² > 0.88), and the adsorption of E2 on biochars and HA were well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm (R² > 0.94). Meanwhile, the order of the E2 adsorption capacity of sorbents was W-BC > C-BC > HA > lignin > collagen > cellulose. The adsorption capacity of biochar and SOM for E2 increased with the enhancement of aromaticity and hydrophobicity and the reduction of polarity. In addition, the increase of pyrolysis temperature of biochars also promoted the adsorption capacity of E2, while oxidation treatment with NaClO reduced the adsorption capacity of HA to E2. These results deepened the understanding of the adsorption behaviour of E2 on SOM and biochar, and expanded the understanding of the behaviour of SEs in the soil environment.

Telomeres are located at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes and vulnerable to exogenous chemical compounds. Exposure to coke oven emissions (COEs) leads to a dose-related telomere damage, and such chromosomal damage might trigger the cGAS/STING signaling pathway which plays an important role in immune surveillance. However, the relationship between the genetic variations in the cGAS/STING signaling pathway and telomere damage in the COEs-exposure workers has not been investigated. Therefore, we recruited 544 coke oven workers and 238 healthy control participants, and determined the level of COEs exposure, concentration of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPYR), genetic polymorphisms and telomere length. The results showed that the telomere length significantly decreased from the control-to high-exposure groups as defined by the external exposure level (P < 0.05). The results also indicated that STING rs7447927 CC, cGAS rs34413328 AA, and cGAS rs610913 AA could inhibit telomere shortening in the exposure group (P < 0.05), and cGAS rs34413328, urine 1-OHPYR and cumulative exposure dose (CED) had a significant association with telomere length by generalized linear model. In conclusion, telomere shortening was a combined consequence of short-term exposure, long-term exposure, and genetic variations among the COEs-exposure workers.

The impacts of microplastic particulates in benthic freshwater organisms have been largely unexplored despite abundant plastic accumulation in the sediments of these systems. We investigated the uptake of plastic particles by benthic filter feeding quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) and associated toxicity exhibited through impacts on mortality, filtration rate, reproduction and oxygen consumption. Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) technology was used to assess the microplastic inclusion. For this purpose, quagga mussels were exposed to four treatments ranging from 0.0 to 0.8 g/L of a high density fluorescent red polyethylene powder in the size range of 10–45 μm for 24-h, and the targeted endpoints were quantified. Identification of several micrograms of microplastics in the digestive tract suggests rapid clearance from the water column by filtering. At the higher concentrations, about 95% of the microplastics ingested remained in the mussels after 24-h. Microplastics were found in the gills which correlated with decreasing filtration rate at higher microplastic concentrations. Despite large-scale ingestion, plastic exposure did not affect survivorship, reproduction rates, or oxygen consumption in the period examined. MALDI-IMS identified unique mass spectra that correlated with microplastic inclusion. This research suggests that microplastics can impair feeding through decreased filtration rates of filter feeding organisms, potentially resulting in a reduction of overall fitness over time and that MALDI-IMS may have the potential to identify microplastics and changes in tissue at the borders of plastic inclusion.

Natural organic matter (NOM) affects the environmental behaviors of AgNPs, which may change their phytotoxicity to plants. However, more evidence can be provided to illustrate how NOM influences AgNPs-induced phytotoxicity. In this study, using rice (Oryza sativa) as a model, the effects of NOM, Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and fulvic acid (FA), on the dissolution and phytotoxicity of AgNPs were investigated. Silver ions decreased in both AgNPs and AgNO₃ solution in the presence of NOM, and the effect of SRHA was stronger than FA. Image-XRF (iXRF) results showed that Ag mainly remained in the root rather than the shoot of rice seedling exposed to AgNPs. NOM mitigated the negative effects of AgNPs and AgNO₃ on rice with lower germination inhibition rate, less chlorophyll reduction, more relative biomass and less O₂•⁻ content. Moreover, NOM improved root cell viability according to FDA fluorescent dye as well as maintained the normal root morphology. Interestingly, the neutral sugars content from pectin, hemicellulose 1, hemicellulose 2 and cellulose of root cell wall in AgNPs and AgNO₃ treatments differed from the control, while it was close to the regular content in AgNPs/AgNO₃+SRHA/FA groups, which implied that NOM regulated the changes. Besides, SRHA led to less germination and less relative biomass than FA due to different chemical characters. Thus, NOM needs to be considered when studying the phytotoxicity of AgNPs.

The conductive polyurethane/polypyrrole/graphene (CPU/PPy/Gr) particle electrode was prepared by an in-situ oxidative polymerization method and used as particle electrodes to degrade levofloxacin (LEV) in a three-dimensional electrode reactor. The prepared CPU/PPy/Gr electrode was characterized systematically and the effects of initial pH, initial LEV concentration, aeration volume, voltage, and electrolyte concentration on the degradation efficiency were investigated. Results showed that more than 90% LEV was degraded and the energy consumption was 20.12 kWh/g LEV under conditions of pH 7, 6 V voltage, 2.0 L/min aeration volume, 20 mg/L initial LEV concentration, and 7 mM concentration of electrolyte (Na₂SO₄). A possible electrochemical oxidation pathway of LEV by the CPU/PPy/Gr electrode was proposed. In addition, the biotoxicity of LEV and its oxidation products was calculated using ECOSAR (Ecological Structure Activity Relationships) program in EPISuite. Toxicity evaluation using luminescent bacteria showed that the toxicities of some intermediates were higher than the parent compound. But the toxicity of degradation processes for LEV was effective decreasing. A possible reactive mechanism in the three-dimensional reactor was also recommended. In brief, the prepared CPU/PPy/Gr particle electrode constitutes an insight into the promising practical application in the wastewater treatment.

Toxic metals have been linked to a range of adverse health effects in freshwater organisms. However, for higher vertebrates, there is little understanding of the large-scale drivers of exposure. We quantified toxic metal/semi-metal concentrations in a sentinel freshwater top predator, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), across England and Wales, and determined how this varied with key natural and anthropogenic factors. We related liver concentrations in 278 otters that died between 2006 and 2017 to habitat biogeochemistry, proximity to point source contamination and to biological characteristics (length, sex, condition). Evidence for any positive association with putative anthropogenic sources (mining, human population, known discharges) was weak or lacking in nearly all cases, with the exception of a positive association between lead and human population density. Despite concerns that burgeoning use of nanosilver in consumer products might increase silver concentrations in waste waters, there was no increase over time. Spatial variation in soil/sediment pH, precipitation, and soil calcium oxide are indicated as significant predictors of metal concentrations in otters (higher cadmium and silver in areas with lower pH and higher rainfall, and higher chromium and lead in areas of lower calcium oxide). Liver chromium and nickel concentrations declined significantly over time (Cr 0.030 ± 1.2 to 0.015 ± 1.3 μg/g dry weight, Ni 0.0038 ± 1.2 to 0.00068 ± 1.5 μg/g, between 2006–2009 and 2014–2017), but other metals showed no temporal change. Biotic associations were important, with age related accumulation indicated for mercury and cadmium (as well as interactions with body condition). Our results suggest that larger-scale geochemical and hydrological processes are important in determining metal exposure in otters, and we provide an indication of risk factors that may be of relevance for freshwater vertebrates in other countries with well-developed water pollution management.

Rapid urbanization and industrialization in China stimulated the great increase of energy consumption, which leads to drastic rise in the emission of anthropogenic waste heat. Anthropogenic heat emission (AHE) is a crucial component of urban energy budget and has direct implications for investigating urban climate and environment. However, reliable and accurate representation of AHE across China is still lacking. This study presented a new machine learning-based top–down approach to generate a gridded anthropogenic heat flux (AHF) benchmark dataset at 1 km spatial resolution for China in 2010. Cubist models were constructed by fusing points-of-interest (POI) data of varying categories and multisource remote sensing data to explore the nonlinear relationships between various geographic predictors and AHE from different heat sources. The strategy of developing specific models for different components and exploiting the complementary features of POIs and remote sensing data generated a more reasonable distribution of AHF. Results showed that the AHF values in urban centers of metropolises over China range from 60 to 190 W m⁻². The highest AHF values were observed in some heavy industrial zones with value up to 415 W m⁻². Compared with previous studies, the spatial distribution of AHF from different heating components was effectively distinguished, which highlights the potential of POI data in improving the precision of AHF mapping. The gridded AHF dataset can serve as input of urban numerical models and can help decision makers in targeting extreme heat sources and polluters in cities and making differentiated and tailored strategies for emission mitigation.

Monobutyl phthalate (MBP) is a primary metabolite of an environmental endocrine disruptor dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which poses a potential threat to living organisms. In this research, the acute toxicity of MBP on energy metabolism in zebrafish gills was studied. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that 10 mg L⁻¹ MBP can induce mitochondrial structural damage of chloride cells after 96 h of continuous exposure. The activity of ion ATPase and the expression level of oxidative phosphorylation-related genes suggest that MBP interferes with ATP synthesis and ion transport. Further leading to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and cell viability, thereby mediating early-stage cell apoptosis. Through a comprehensive analysis of principal component analysis (PCA) and integrated biomarker response (IBR) scores, atp5a1, a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, is mainly inhibited by MBP, followed by genes encoding ion ATPase (atp1b2 and atp2b1). Importantly, MBP inhibits aerobic metabolism by inhibiting the key enzyme malate dehydrogenase (MDH) in the TCA cycle, forcing zebrafish to maintain ATP supply by enhancing anaerobic metabolism.
