RESUMO A consorciação de culturas é um sistema de produção capaz de reduzir os custos produtivos e aumentar a rentabilidade dos produtores de hortaliças, uma vez que ele possibilita o uso mais eficiente da área e dos insumos agrícolas. Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da densidade de plantas de alface na viabilidade econômica do consórcio de alface e rúcula, em duas épocas de cultivo (inverno e verão), dois experimentos foram instalados em campo, na Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brasil. Os tratamentos corresponderam a cinco consórcios de alface com rúcula nos espaçamentos entre linhas da alface de: 0,20; 0,25; 0,30; 0,35 e 0,40 m, cinco cultivos solteiros de alface nos mesmos espaçamentos adotados em consórcio, e um cultivo solteiro de rúcula no espaçamento entre linhas de 0,20 m. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições. No inverno, maior rentabilidade é obtida com a maior densidade populacional. Maior rentabilidade das culturas, em ambas épocas de cultivo é obtida no verão. | ABSTRACT Intercropping is a production system that can reduce the production cost and increase the profitability of vegetable producers, since it permits more efficient land and agricultural inputs use. In order to evaluate the effect of lettuce plant density on the economic feasibility of lettuce-rocket intercropping system over two growing seasons (winter and summer), two experiments were conducted in the field at São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil. The treatments consisted of five lettuce-rocket intercrops with spacing between lettuce rows of: 0.20; 0.25; 0.30; 0.35 and 0.40 m, five sole crop of lettuce in the same spacing between rows adopted in the intercropping system, and a sole cropping of rocket with spacing between rows of 0.20 m. The statistical design adopted was the complete randomized block with four replicates. During winter, higher profitability was achieved with the highest population density. Highest profitability of the crops in both seasons was obtained in summer.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivos avaliar o efeito da adubação com esterco bovino em atributos de fertilidade de solos com diferentes teores de argila e, verificar a influência da adubação com esterco bovino na produção de alface americana, e da rúcula e almeirão, cultivados de forma sucessiva a alface. O experimento foi realizado em vasos, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 3x6 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por três solos com diferentes teores de argila (166; 362; 565 g kg-1) e seis doses de esterco bovino (0; 10; 20; 40; 80 e 160 t ha-1). Porções de cada solo receberam esterco bovino e calcário, foram transferidas para vasos, umedecidas e incubadas por 30 dias. A seguir, efetuou-se adubação mineral de plantio e cada vaso recebeu uma muda de alface. Após a colheita da alface, para avaliar o efeito residual da adubação orgânica foram realizados dois cultivos sucessivos, um de rúcula e outro de almeirão. A aplicação de até 160 t ha-1 de esterco bovino diminui a acidez e, aumenta os teores de nutrientes, particularmente P, K e Zn em solos com teores de argila de 165 a 565 g kg-1. A adubação com esterco bovino em doses de até 160 t ha-1 aumenta a condutividade elétrica dos solos, e esse acréscimo não prejudica o crescimento e a produção de hortaliças folhosas. A adubação com esterco bovino aumenta a produção de alface, como também a de rúcula e almeirão, cultivados de forma sucessiva. | ABSTRACT The effect of organic fertilization with cattle manure on fertility properties of soils with different clay contents was evaluated; as well as the influence of cattle manure fertilization on the production of lettuce, and on subsequent arugula and common chicory grown in these soils. The experiment with pot plants was arranged in randomized blocks and analyzed in a 3x6 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of three soil types with different clay contents (166; 362; 565 g kg-1) and six cattle manure rates (0; 10; 20; 40; 80, and 160 t ha-1). Batches of each soil were manured, limed, filled in pots, moistened, and incubated for 30 days. Then, mineral base fertilization was applied and one lettuce seedling per each pot was grown. After lettuce harvest, the residual effect of organic fertilization was assessed in two subsequent crops, first arugula and then common chicory. The application of up to 160 t ha-1 cattle manure reduces soil acidity and increases nutrient contents, particularly of P, K and Zn, in soils with 165 to 565 g kg-1 clay content. Fertilization with cattle manure at rates of up to 160 t ha-1 increases electrical conductivity of soils, without affecting growth and yield of the leafy vegetables. Cattle manuring increases the yield of lettuce, as well as of arugula and common chicory grown afterwards.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficiência agronômica de combinações de cenoura e rúcula em diferentes densidades populacionais em bicultivo nas condições semiáridas do Nordeste brasileiro. O estudo foi realizado na Fazenda Experimental "Rafael Fernandes" da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), durante o período de setembro de 2011 a fevereiro de 2012. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 com quatro repetições. As combinações foram quatro densidades populacionais de cenoura (40, 60, 80 e 100% da população recomendada em cultivo solteiro - PRCS) com quatro densidades populacionais de rúcula (40, 60, 80 e 100% da PRCS). As densidades populacionais recomendadas para os cultivos solteiros de cenoura e rúcula são 500.000 e 1.000.000 de plantas por hectare, respectivamente. Todos os tratamentos foram adubados com jitirana (Merremia aegyptia L.), uma espécie espontânea do bioma Caatinga. A maior eficiência agronômica da cenoura consorciada com a rúcula em bicultivo foi alcançada na combinação populacional de 40% da PRCS da cenoura e 100% da PRCS de rúcula. A produção comercial máxima (33,74 t ha-1) de raízes de cenoura e os rendimentos máximos de massa verde (8,06 e 2,67 t ha-1) de rúcula nos dois cultivos foram obtidos também na combinação de densidades populacionais de 40% da PRCS de cenoura e 100% da PRCS de rúcula. | ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of intercropping combinations of carrot and arugula at different population densities in bicropping in the semi-arid conditions of the Brazilian Northeast. The study was conducted at the "Rafael Fernandes" Experimental Farm of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA) during the period September 2011 to February 2012. The experimental design was of randomized complete blocks with treatments arranged in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme with four replications. The combinations were four population densities of carrot (40, 60, 80 and 100% of the recommended population in sole crop - RPSC) with four population densities of arugula (40, 60, 80 and 100% of the RPSC). The recommended population densities for sole crops of carrot and arugula are 500,000 and 1,000,000 plants per hectare, respectively. All treatments were fertilized with hairy woodrose (Merremia aegyptia L.), a spontaneous species of the Caatinga biome. The highest agronomic efficiency of carrot intercropped with arugula in bicropping was achieved in the combination of 40% of RPSC for the carrot and 100% of RPSC for the arugula. The commercial maximum yield (33.74 t ha-1) of carrot roots and the maximum yields of arugula green mass (8.06 and 2.67 t ha-1) in both cultivations were also obtained in the combination of population densities of 40% of RPSC for carrot and 100% of RPSC for arugula.

ABSTRACT In the cultivation of leafy vegetables, it is common to apply high amounts of nitrogen fertilizer. The imbalance between the absorption and the use of nitrogen (N) by the plant increases the nitrate content and decreases the quality of the vegetables because nitrate has a strong association with compounds harmful to human health. On the other hand, there is a lack of information on how N dose in intercropping, in order to improve yield, affects the quality (nitrate content) of vegetables. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the nitrate content of intercropped lettuce and rocket, with nitrate content acting as a function of the nitrogen dose applied to these crops. The experiment was carried out at UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, from September to December 2006. The experimental design was a complete randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 × 4 + 2 factorial scheme, with four varying concentrations of N each for lettuce and rocket (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1 of N), plus two treatments corresponding to lettuce and rocket monocrops. Nitrate content in lettuce under intercropping is 42% less compared to that in the monocrop. Increasing nitrogen concentrations increased nitrate levels for lettuce and rocket under intercropping; however, these levels are below those found for their respective monocrops. | RESUMO No cultivo de hortaliças folhosas é comum a aplicação de elevadas quantidades de fertilizante nitrogenado. O desequilíbrio entre a absorção e o uso do nitrogênio (N) pela planta eleva o teor de nitrato e diminui a qualidade das hortaliças, pois tem forte associação com compostos prejudiciais à saúde humana. Por outro lado, há falta de informação para dose de N em cultivos consorciados com vistas à obtenção de boa produtividade e como isso impacta a qualidade (teor de nitrato) das hortaliças. Sendo assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o teor de nitrato na alface e na rúcula, em função da dose de nitrogênio aplicada às culturas em cultivo consorciado. O experimento foi conduzido na UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, de setembro a dezembro de 2006. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 2. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro doses de N para a alface (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1 de N) e quatro doses de N para a rúcula (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1 de N), mais dois tratamentos adicionais correspondentes às monoculturas de alface e rúcula. O teor de nitrato na cultura da alface em consórcio reduziu 42% quando comparado à monocultura. O aumento das doses de nitrogênio, para ambas as culturas em consórcio, resulta em aumento nos teores de nitrato para alface e rúcula; porém, abaixo dos encontrados para suas respectivas monoculturas.

RESUMO Em sistemas intensivos de cultivo de hortaliças é natural o aumento de teores de nutrientes no solo devido às frequentes aplicações de fertilizantes, em especial de fósforo (P). Existem poucos estudos sobre a resposta das olerícolas à fertilização fosfatada nessas condições. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho agronômico da rúcula em função da adubação fosfatada em Latossolo com elevado teor do nutriente. Cinco doses de P (0, 50, 100, 200 e 300 kg ha-1 de P2O5) foram avaliados em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Máximo teor de P no solo e teor de P na parte aérea na colheita foram obtidos com a aplicação de 300 kg ha-1 de P2O5. A rúcula respondeu negativamente à adubação fosfatada. O aumento das doses de P promoveu redução da altura e produtividade da cultura. | ABSTRACT In intensive vegetable production systems, it is natural to increase nutrient contents in the soil due to the frequent fertiliser applications, especially phosphorus (P). There are few studies on the response of vegetables to phosphate fertilisation under such conditions. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of rocket as a function of phosphorus fertilisation in a P-rich Rhodic Eutrudox soil. Five P doses (0, 50, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1 P2O5) were evaluated in a randomised complete block design with four replicates. Maximum soil P content and shoot P content at harvest were obtained at a dose of 300 kg ha-1 P2O5. Rocket responded negatively to P fertilisation. The increase of P doses promoted the decrease of height and yield of the crop.

RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar combinações de cultivares de coentro e rúcula em bicultivo com cultivares de cenoura em sistema consorciado de faixas. O estudo foi desenvolvido de novembro de 2014 a março de 2015. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 2 + 2, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram da combinação de duas cultivares de coentro (Verdão e Português), com duas cultivares de cenoura (Brasília e Esplanada) e duas cultivares de rúcula (Cultivada e Folha Larga) em sistema de consórcio em faixas, mais dois tratamentos adicionais, onde o primeiro representa as cultivares em monocultivo e o segundo os tipos de cultivo (monocultivo e consórcio). As características avaliadas no coentro e na rúcula foram: rendimento de massa verde e massa seca da parte aérea. Na cenoura foram avaliados: massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca de raízes, produtividade total e comercial e produtividade classificada de raízes. No sistema de consórcio, foram avaliados os índices agronômicos: índice de uso eficiente de terra, índice de eficiência produtiva e pontuação da variável canônica. Os indicadores de eficiência econômica determinados foram: lucro bruto e líquido, taxa de retorno, margem de lucro, vantagem monetária e vantagem monetária corrigida. Não houve interação significativa entre as cultivares de coentro, cenoura e rúcula nos rendimentos de massa verde de coentro e de rúcula e nas produtividades total e comercial de raízes de cenoura. A melhor policultura foi a que envolveu a cultivar ―Português‖, ―Esplanada‖ e ―Cultivada‖. | ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate combinations of cultivars of coriander and arugula in two croppings with cultivars of carrot in a strip-intercropping system. The study was conducted from November 2014 to March 2015. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in a 2 x 2 x 2 + 2 factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of two cultivars of coriander (Verdão and Português) with two cultivars of carrot (Brasília and Esplanada) and two cultivars of arugula (Cultivada and Folha Larga) in a strip-intercropping system plus two additional treatments, where the first represents the cultivars in monocropping and the second the cultivation types (monocropping and intercropping). The characteristics evaluated in the coriander and arugula were green mass yield and shoot dry mass. The following were evaluated in carrot: shoot dry mass, dry mass of roots, total and commercial productivity, and classified productivity of roots. In the intercropping system, the agronomic indices of land equivalent ratio, productive efficiency index, and score of the canonical variable were evaluated. The economic efficiency indicators determined were gross and net income, rate of return, profit margin, monetary advantage, and modified monetary advantage. There was no significant interaction among the cultivars of coriander, carrot, and arugula for coriander and arugula green mass yields, and for total and commercial productivities of carrot roots. The best polyculture was of that involved in the cultivars ―Português,‖ ―Esplanada,‖ and ―Cultivada‖.

Abstract: The present work aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of lettuce-arugula intercropping fertilized with different amounts of roostertree biomass incorporated into the ground. The experiment was conducted during the period of September to November of 2011, in the research area of the Experimental Farm Rafael Fernandes, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of the following biomass amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil (5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 t ha- 1 on a dry basis). The characteristics evaluated in the vegetables were: height and diameter of plants (lettuce), number of leaves per plant, productivity (lettuce), yield of green mass (arugula) and dry mass of shoots. The efficiency of intercropping system was determined through the score of the canonical variable. The optimization of the agronomic performance of the lettuce intercropped with arugula was made possible with the incorporation of about 37 t ha-1 of roostertree into the ground. The use of roostertree as green manure is agronomically viable in the intercropping of lettuce and arugula besides contributing to a better use of environmental resources. | Resumo: O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho agronômico do consórcio de alface e rúcula fertilizado com diferentes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo. O experimento foi conduzido no período de setembro a novembro de 2011, na área de pesquisa da Fazenda Experimental Rafael Fernandes da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram das seguintes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo (5,15, 25, 35 e 45 t ha-1 em base seca). As características avaliadas nas hortaliças foram: altura e diâmetro de plantas (alface), número de folhas por planta, produtividade (alface), rendimento de massa verde (rúcula) e massa seca da parte aérea. A eficiência do cultivo consorciado foi determinada pelo escore da variável canônica. A otimização do desempenho agronômico da alface consorciada com rúcula foi viabilizada com a incorporação de aproximadamente 37 t ha-1 de flor-de-seda ao solo. O uso de flor-de-seda como adubo verde é viável agronomicamente no cultivo associado de alface e rúcula, além de contribuir para um melhor aproveitamento dos recursos ambientais.

ABSTRACT: This work aimed to study the agronomic feasibility of the arugula (A) and lettuce (L) bicropping intercropped with carrot (C) under different amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil and proportions of population densities among component crops in semiarid conditions of the Rio Grande do Norte state. The experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications, with the treatments arranged in a factorial 4 x 4. The first factor was constituted by the amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil (10, 25, 40 and 55 t ha-1 on a dry basis) and the second factor by the proportions of population densities of the component crops in polyculture [(50A-50C-50L (%); 40A-50C-40L (%); 30A-50C-30L (%) and 20A-50C-20L (%) of the recommended populations in sole crops - RPSC)]. The leafy vegetable crops were planted in two cultivations during the carrot cycle, and a joint analysis was carried out involving the two cultivations in the 4 x 4 factorial scheme. The characteristics evaluated were green mass yield (arugula), dry mass of shoots and productivity (lettuce), total, commercial and classified productivity of carrot roots. The modified monetary advantage was used to evaluate the agronomic feasibility of intercropping systems. The use of roostertree as green manure proved viable in the polyculture of arugula, carrot, and lettuce. The major agronomic performance of the arugula, carrot and lettuce in the polyculture was registered in the amount of 55 t ha-1 of roostertree incorporated into the soil. The population density proportions of arugula, carrot and lettuce of 50A-50C-50L (%) of the RPSC were those that provided the greatest agronomic feasibility of the polycultures. | RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a viabilidade agronômica do bicultivo de rúcula (R) e alface consorciado (A) com cenoura (C) sob diferentes quantidades de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo e de proporções de densidades populacionais entre as culturas componentes no semiárido do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos completos casualizados com quatro repetições, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4. O primeiro fator foi constituído pelas quantidades de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo (10, 25, 40 e 55 t ha-1 em base seca) e o segundo fator pelas proporções de densidades populacionais das culturas componentes em policultivo [(50R-50C-50A (%); 40R-50C-40A (%); 30R-50C-30A(%) e 20R-50C-20A (%) das populações recomendadas em cultivos solteiro - PRCS)]. As folhosas foram plantadas em dois cultivos no ciclo da cenoura e uma análise conjunta foi realizada envolvendo os dois cultivos da rúcula e da alface e o fatorial 4 x 4. As características avaliadas foram: rendimento de massa verde (rúcula); massa seca da parte aérea e produtividade (alface); produtividade total; comercial; e classificada de raízes de cenoura. A vantagem monetária corrigida foi usada para avaliar a viabilidade agronômica dos sistemas consorciados. O uso da flor-de-seda como adubo verde se mostrou viável no policultivo de rúcula, cenoura e alface. O melhor desempenho agronômico do policultivo de rúcula, cenoura e alface foi registrado na quantidade de 55 t ha-1 de flor-de-seda incorporada ao solo. As proporções de densidades populacionais de rúcula, cenoura e alface de 50-50-50 (%) das PRCS foram as que proporcionaram a maior viabilidade agronômica dos policultivos.

ABSTRACT Splitting nitrogen (N) fertilizer application can be an efficient nutrient management technique to improve productivity and plant quality, as well as to reduce the negative environmental impact caused by N losses. In this context, the present study investigated how the management of N affects the agronomic characteristics of field-grown arugula plants. Nine treatments were assessed in a randomized complete block design, in a 4 x 2 + 1 factorial scheme, with three replicates. The evaluated factors were doses of N (60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N ha-1), split N fertilizer applications at side-dress (two and three times) and an additional treatment without a N supply. Maximum height was obtained with the application of 198 kg N ha-1. Nitrate content, fresh mass and productivity increased with increasing N doses. There was no effect of split N fertilizer applications on the characteristics evaluated. Therefore, the supply of 240 kg N ha-1 divided into two portions was considered as the best management strategy.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen is the second nutrient most demanded by arugula. However, the positive effect it has on yield can negatively impact the quality of this vegetable, with negative effects on human health. Two experiments (summer and autumn) were carried out to evaluate the effect of N rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg ha−1) on the arugula growth, yield and quality (nitrate content). Each experiment was set up in a randomized block design with four replications. Increasing rates of N reflected positively on leaf N content and thus, higher and desirable values of height, leaf number, leaf area and plant dry mass were obtained in both growing seasons. Consequently, the yield had significant increase, which N was maximized in summer (4.9 kg m−2) and autumn (2.6 kg m−2) and leaf N of 29.4 and 27.0 g kg−1, respectively, at rates of 250 and 213 kg ha−1 and both growing seasons. The higher rate the higher foliar nitrate content of arugula, in summer (2931.3 mg kg−1) and autumn (4218.4 mg kg−1). The foliar nitrate content in both crop season do not reach the risk level to human being heath.
