How fair is workfare? gender, public works, and employment in rural Ethiopia Texte intégral
Sakellariou, Chris | Yohannes, Yisehac | Quisumbing, Agnes R.
The authors use the Ethiopian Rural Household Survey to examine the gender dimensions of public works. They use three rounds of a panel conducted in 1994-95 to explore the determinants of participation in, days worked, wages, and earnings from wage labor, food-for-work (FFW), and self-employment. Then they analyze public works data collected in 1997, together with program data collected in 2003. FFW operates in a similar fashion with other labor markets in Ethiopia where female participation is low. Gender differences are important in the participation decision, but operate differently in different types of labor markets. Better-educated women are more likely to participate in the wage labor market, while higher livestock holdings diminish participation more for women. Females with more schooling are also more likely to participate in FFW. Mens and womens participation in FFW and self-employment responds differently to household and community shocks. After controlling for selection in which gender plays an important role, gender disadvantages in the wage labor market and FFW are insignificant. Returns to schooling and height are consistently positive in both wage labor and FFW, suggesting returns to human capital investment, even in the low-skill labor markets of rural Ethiopia. Program characteristics significantly affect participation, with differential effects on men and women. Participation, days worked, wages, and earnings vary according to the type of project. Relative to infrastructure projects, water, social services, and other projects decrease participation probabilities. Distance has a strong negative effect on womens participation relative to mens.<BR>

| Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, which has felids as the definitive host; and several animal species as intermediary hosts. The intestinal cycle occurs in the definitive host, which results in the production of oocysts eliminated in the feces. In the intermediary hosts, including man, the extra intestinal cycle occurs by forming tissue cysts. Felids eliminate millions of non-sporulated oocysts in the feces during the primary infection, and this phase is self-limiting. Sporulation occurs in the environment in 3 to 5 days, when at optimum temperature. Even though domestic cats play an important role in maintaining the toxoplasma life cycle, direct contact with cats is not an important link in transmission. Human cases are often associated with the consumption of food: vegetables or water contaminated with oocysts eliminated by felids or products of animal origin with the presence of cysts. Toxoplasmosis is of great importance in public health, since it is one of the most widespread zoonosis in the world. Several animals (about 30 species of birds and 300 of mammals), as well as humans, can suffer from the infection. Seroprevalence in humans is high, and it is estimated that up to a third of the global population may be seropositive and present an asymptomatic chronic infection. The primary infection of pregnant women represents a great risk, and transmission to the fetus may occur, which leads to lesions in the central nervous system, due to the tropism of the protozoan for this tissue. This infection form can be fatal. It is also a hazard for immunocompromised patients, in which it causes severe symptoms. Eye disease is probably the most common potentially severe symptomatic manifestation in acute postnatal toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis can be due to a congenital or acquired postnatal disease and can be associated with an acute infection or reactivation. In spite of that, toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis still neglected in Brazil, it is worrying that there is no public policy that makes doctors pay more attention to this disease. It is only recently that congenital toxoplasmosis has become a disease of mandatory notification. Especially considering that its transmission through the consumption of contaminated food and water has been associated with outbreaks involving a large number of people affected in the country.

| As a result of the work that we came carrying out from 1989 in the searching of new rice varieties Which has good performance to low nitrogen fertilizer and moderate resistance to the hydric stress condition. Its was obtained the rice variety IACuba 34 from the crossing carried out in 1995 among the varieties Colombia 1///ECIA 67-140-S1-1-5-31(4024)//IR1857-78-1/CP3C2 and after 6 years of yield studies in different localities and the corresponding management studies also in which the genotype was cultivated under a period of hydric stress from 35 days after germination to the panicle initiation stage and the 50% of mineral nitrogen application reduction. The variety was characterized by a high yield potential from 4.1 - 6,6 t/ha in the different localities, beside the high agricultural yield potential it showed high whole grains percentage (50 - 59% ), very good cooking quality, also resistance to the Tagosodes orizicolus insect and good response to the acarus Stenotarsonemus spinki. Because of this variety showed good performance under low levels of nitrogen applications and conditions and tolerance to moderate drought ones. When it was cultivated applying organic matter form different sources, it was able to reach of yield up to 6 t/ha in soil with good quality water, what constitute without place to doubts an important result for the rice sowing in this production type. Among the results it stands out that the level of 90 Kg of N/ha was the one that produced the highest yield, when if was combined with the seeding density of 102 Kg under different conditions.

| Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic, which efficiently colonizes the human gastric mucosa. It was first isolated in 1982 and is now considered an important human pathogen that causes various gastrointestinal diseases and is also recognized as a carcinogen. There is a high prevalence worldwide, with a higher percentage in developing countries, probably related to living conditions. Thus, the socio-economic status is the most important determinant for the development of the infection by H. pylori, being lower social classes exhibiting the highest prevalence. To date, the routes of transmission of this organism are not fully elucidated. Based on numerous epidemiological and microbiological evidences, several transmission paths have been suggested. Among them water and food are included as potential vectors, although the detection of these bacteria is complex in distinct samples to gastric tissue. H. pylori can happen to a viable but non-culturable state (VBNC) under conditions of stress. However, there have been several studies to assess the prevalence and survival of the bacteria in various water sources and food samples. Results indicate the possibility that they act as a reservoir for transmission. For this reason, this review article focuses on the evidence supporting the transmission of H. pylori through water and food.
