Structure-activity studies: in vitro antileishmanial and antimalarial activities of anthraquinones from Morinda lucida.

Anthraquinones were isolated following bioassay-guided fractionation from roots of M. lucida (collected from Ghana). Structure-activity studies showed that an aldehyde group at C-2 and a phenolic hydroxy group at C-3 enhanced the antiprotozoal activity of the anthraquinones against Plasmodium falciparum and promastigotes of Leishmania major in vitro.
