Selection of yeasts which can produce citric acid

Objective of this study is to select the yeast strains which can produce citric acid. Seventy-five strains of yeast were isolated from various samples of leaves, fruits and soils. Only thirteen strains could produce clear zone with diameter more than 1.0 cm. In the final selection, S11-strain showed the result of high citric acid production. This strain produced quite the same amount of citric acid in sucrose and glucose medium. When comparing citric acid production of S11-strain and candida lipolytic TISTR 5054 and candida guilliermondii TISTR 5206 in sucrose medium, the result showed that S11-strain was able to produce the highest citric acid.
