Development and evaluation of the nutrition component of a law enforcement wellness program.

Recognizing that the health and appearance of the police force were important for a good public image and staff morale, the Police Chief of the Austin Police Department (APD)) authorized the formation of a wellness program with a nutrition component. The staff physician/health director at APD contacted us and plans were made for a twelve-month nutrition program. The objectives of the nutrition program were to decrease weight, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels of the participants.
