Screening of lactic acid bacteria from Apis mellifera L. and Trigona spp. against Paenibacillus larvae (White) causing American foul brood disease of honeybees

A total of 28 putative lactic acid bacteria were isolated consisting of 23 isolates from the hindguts of Apis mellifera and 5 from Trigona spp.. The isolates were screened for inhibitory activity against the bee pathogen Paenibacillus larvae (white) using stab-on agar assay. Nine isolates scored positive (with 2 mm zone of inhibition on stab-on assay) for inhibition of the pathogen. Two of these isolates exhibited good antagonistic activity. These were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum based on carbohydrate fermentation patterns and through 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
