An anatomical study on the branching patterns of left coronary artery in the rats
2007
Ahn, D.C. (Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Republic of Korea) | Kim, I.S. (Chonbuk National University, Jeonju, Republic of Korea), E-mail: [email protected]
The left main descending artery (LMDA) of left coronary artery (LCA) in rats runs around the left side of conus arteriosus after arising from the aortic sinus and descends to the apex of heart with branching several branches into the wall of left ventricle (LV). The ligation site of LMDA for myocardial infarction (MI) is the 2~4 mm from LCA origin, between the pulmonary trunk and left auricle. The characteristics that rat heart has no interventricular groove on the surface and its coronary arteries run intramyocardially with branching several branches give the difficulty in surgery for MI which resulted in expected size.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidative effects of Houttuynia cordata root on non-lipid oxidative damage. The antioxidative effects of methanolic (MeOH) extract of Houttuynia cordata root on non-lipid, including liposome oxidation, oxidation of deoxyribose, protein oxidation, chelating, scavenging, and 2'-deoxyguanosine (2'dG) oxidation were investigated. Houttuynia cordata root exhibited high antioxidative effect in a liposome model system. The inhibitory effect of MeOH extract on deoxyribose damage exhibited antioxidative effect and it afforded considerable protection against damage to deoxyribose.

Staphylococci are Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic cocci, normally found on the skin and mucosal surfaces of most warm-blooded animals and often involved in a wide variety of diseases in animals. Staphylococcal infections are treated with antibiotics and, consequently, antibiotic resistance and/or acquired resistance have developed. Staphylococcus (S.) intermedius and Staphylococcus (S.) aureus are 2 common veterinary isolates that are frequently associated with suppurative infections. This study was undertaken to examine antimicrobial susceptibility of S. aureus (23 isolates) and S. intermedius (160 isolates) isolated from dogs in Gwangju, Korea and investigate whether the antibiotic resistance of S. aureus and S. intermedius is effected by the site of isolation, age, and sex of dogs.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an important bacterial pathogen that causes chronic gastritis and is associated with gastroduodenal ulcer disease, adenocarcinoma of the distal stomach, and gastric lymphoma in humans. The differences of host susceptibility of H. pylori infection associated with host age have not been well-defined in human. To evaluate the difference in host susceptibility to infection in relation to age of acquisition of H. pylori infection, we designed an experiment involving inoculation of H. pylori ATCC 43504 at different ages of Mongolian gerbils.

Cutaneous asthenia or dematosparaxis is an uncommon, congenital and inherited connective tissue disease of dog and cat, resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in man. EDS is characterized by loose, hyperextensible and, fragile skin, it is attributed to mutations in connective tissue gene. These mutations cause defects in type Ⅰ or Ⅲ collagen synthesis and as a result lack of strength or elasticity to skin, joint, ligament and vessels. EDS-affected animals often experience subcutaneous hematomas that have long bleeding times.

A 3-month-old male Maltese dog was presented with generalized trembling, ataxia, and seizure. The patient had traumatic injury on history takings. Physical examination revealed dome shaped cranium with open fontanelle, nasal hemorrhage, and blepharoedema with hemorrhage on the left side. On serum biochemical profiles, creatine phosphokinase was severely elevated. There was no remarkable finding on radiography. Ultrasound images of brain were obtained via a persistence bregmatic fontanelle, and bilaterally dilated lateral ventricles with a hyperechoic mass on the left temporal lobe were detected.

In 3 dogs with gallbladder mucocele, rupture of gallbladder was diagnosed and treated. Although the diagnosis of gallbladder is challenging due to non-specific clinical signs and physical examination findings, mucoceles are ultrasonographically characterized by the appearance of the stellate of finely striated bile patterns and differ from biliary sludge by the absence of gravity dependent bile movement. In this case, gallbladder rupture caused by mucocele can be diagnosed based on not only above characteristics but secondary lesion such as ascites around gallbladder and swollen hyperechoic mesentery.

Measurement uncertainty could play an important role in the assessment of test results in laboratories and industries. We investigated measurement uncertainties possibly included in determination of flubendazole, a benzimidazole anthelmintic, in pork by HPLC. The concentration of flubendazole was 62.69 ng/g in a sample of pork. Uncertainty was estimated in the analytical procedure of flubendazole. A model equation was made for determination of flubendazole in pork. The four uncertainty components such as weight of sample, volume of sample, calibration curve, and recovery were selected to estimate measurement uncertainties.

This study was carried out to investigate the pathogenesis and pathogenicity of the porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) Korean isolate from weaned pigs. Twenty four weaned pigs, PCV2, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) antibodies free, were allocated to 4 groups (n=6). Six pigs were inoculated intranasally with PCV2 alone, 6 with PCV2 and PRRSV, 6 with the combined PCV2/PRRSV/PPV inoculum, and 6 were remained as a uninoculated negative control. Pigs were killed 3 and 6 weeks after inoculation and tissue samples examined for gross and microscopic lesions and for the presence of PCV2 antigens and nucleic acids.

A 7-year-old Jeju native boar was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University with a clinical signs of anorexia, melena, lethargy and sudden death. At necropsy, four coalescing firm masses were occupied in the abdominal cavity between ventral surface of stomach and pancreas. Individual mass was a yellowish white in color and up to 6 cm in diameter. These masses were not encapsulated and bulged from the cut surface. Liver and spleen were enlarged and pale nodules were presented in these tissues.
