Effects of aging on the digestive solubilization of Cu from sediments

Solubilization of particulate Cu by different solutions, mimicking digestive fluids of deposit-feeders, was quantified in stable isotope ⁶⁵Cu-spiked sediments (with 3 days-2 months Cu-sediment contact time or aging). Copper solubilization generally decreased with prolonged aging. However, such decrease became less evident after 1 month and equilibrium of Cu in sediments could be reached after 2 months. Aging effects on Cu solubilization can be explained by the changes in Cu geochemical fractionation with aging: Cu generally transferred from more mobile phases (carbonate and Fe–Mn associated) to more refractory phases (organic associated and residual phase). Besides Cu geochemical fractionation, digestive fluid composition and different Cu solubilization pathways involved, as well as sedimentary organic content, could all affect the digestive solubilization of Cu and its change with aging. Our results emphasize the necessity of considering Cu aging in laboratory sediment toxicity experiments, and in risk assessment of Cu contaminated sediments.

Rice, used as staple food for half of the world population, can easily accumulate arsenic (As) into its grain, which often leads to As contamination. The health risk induced by presence of As in food depends on its release from the food matrix, i.e., its bioaccessibility. Using an in vitro gastrointestinal simulator, we incubated two types of cooked rice (total As: 0.389 and 0.314 mg/kg). Arsenic bioaccessibility and speciation changes were determined upon gastrointestinal digestion. Washing with deionized water and cooking did not result in changes of As speciation in the rice although the arsenic content dropped by 7.1–20.6%. Arsenic bioaccessibility of the cooked rice in the small intestine ranged between 38 and 57%. Bioaccessibility slightly increased during digestion in the simulated small intestine and decreased with time in the simulated colon. Significant speciation changes were noted in the simulated colon, with trivalent monomethylarsonate (MMAᴵᴵᴵ) becoming an important species.

Concentrations of elements (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) were determined in ten species of macroalgae collected from six sites in the Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil, between May and July of 2010. An optimized microwave-assisted digestion procedure was used to digest the samples. The elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A wide range of metal concentrations were observed between the species analysed. Somewhat higher concentrations of Cd (5.99μgg⁻¹), Co (372μgg⁻¹), Mn (640μgg⁻¹), Ni (17.2μgg⁻¹) and Zn (51.4μgg⁻¹) were found in the brown macroalgae species Padina spp., whereas elements, such as As (19.7μgg⁻¹) and Pb (8.27μgg⁻¹), were mainly concentrated in the species Sargassum spp. and Bostrychia montagnei, respectively. Statistical analyses (ANOVA) of the Padina data showed significant inter-site differences for all metals examined except nickel.

Protection of non-human biota from ionizing contaminants, especially in the vicinity of nuclear installations is a very important aspect for nuclear engineers and ecologists. In this view, a baseline data on the activity concentration of ²¹⁰Po and ²¹⁰Pb were quantified in different tissues of molluscs inhabiting the intertidal region along the coast of Kudankulam. The activity concentration was noticed higher in the organs associated with digestion and metabolism. Filter feeding bivalve molluscs registered the maximum activity of ²¹⁰Po in their whole body compared to grazing gastropods. ²¹⁰Po:²¹⁰Pb ratio was calculated to be greater than unity in most of the analysed tissues. The ecological sensitivity of molluscs to the radiation exposure and the safeness of the environment was analysed by calculating the external and internal dose rate. The hazard quotient for molluscs was lesser than the global bench mark dose rate of 10μGyh–¹.

Extraction and analysis methods have been developed for the detection of the following four antibacterial agents and two natural estrogens in treated municipal wastewater sludge and commercial compost: sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfadimethoxine (SDM), tetracycline (TET), oxytetracycline (OXY), estrone (E1), and 17β-estradiol (E2). The antibiotics and estrogens were extracted from secondary sludge and mixed compost using ultrasonic solvent extraction. Citric acid (pH 4.7) and methanol were used as extraction buffer, followed by tandem-solid-phase extraction cleanup, strong anion exchange + hydrophilic–lipophilic balance for antibiotics and CarboPrep/NAX for estrogens. For quantification, two different methods were employed, using HPLC–MS/MS, with an electrospray ionization source for antibiotics and an atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization source for estrogens. Recoveries were 11–31% for the sulfonamides (SMX and SDM) and tetracyclines (TET and OXY) and 30–59% for the estrogens (E1 and E2) over the entire method. Limits of detection for the extraction method were in the nanogram per gram range for dry weight sludge and compost samples. Neither of the two sulfonamide antibiotics was detected in secondary sludge or mixed compost samples. Estrogens were found in compost in amounts of 160 ± 65 ng/g (E1) and 21 ± 3 ng/g (E2), but not in sludge. The tetracyclines, as well as what is believed to be the 4-epimer of OXY, were found in both sludge and compost in amounts of 1.57 ± 0.67 and 2.95 ± 0.42 μg/g (TET), 0.56 ± 0.12 and 6.51 ± 0.52 μg/g (OXY), and 7.60 ± 1.68 and 1.35 ± 0.24 μg/g (4-epi-OXY), respectively. These results indicate that sorption-prone compounds are not removed during the wastewater treatment process and can persist through sludge digestion and that the composting process does not sufficiently eliminate these particular contaminants. Thus, biosolids (even composted) are an additional source of drug residues leaching into the environment, and it must be considered while using biosolids as fertilizer.

Assessing multielement adsorption of trace metals on materials having potential to be used as soil amendments is an essential stage for the remediation success, as soil contamination rarely occurs with a single element. This study evaluated mono-/multielement adsorption of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb on aluminum (AMB) and iron mining by-products (IMB, used for comparison). Prior to adsorption, these products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, isoelectric point, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and microwave furnace digestion. Sorption experiments comprised: (1) pH adjustment (5.5, 6.5, and natural suspension pH), (2) mono- and multielement adsorption, and (3) desorption. Rising pH from 5.5 to natural suspension values (9.5) increased monoelement adsorption of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb on AMB up to 3.8-, 1.4-, 6.2-, and 1.1-fold, whereas multielement adsorption was increased up to 17.3-, 2.0-, 20.3-, and 1.2-fold, respectively. Zinc and Cd were less adsorbed than Cu and Pb and more affected by competition. Multielement adsorption at 5.5 pH in AMB resulted in smaller adsorption of Zn (up to 4.6-fold), Cu (1.4-fold), Cd (3.3-fold), and Pb (1.1-fold) when compared with monoelement adsorption. The lower the pH, the smaller the adsorption and the higher the desorption. The AMB showed higher capacity to maintain the elements adsorbed than the IMB.

INTRODUCTION: A chemometric evaluation has been done to classify metal ions in soils and to determine whether or not the gastric and intestinal phases of a physiologically based extraction test bear any relation to any of the phases of the four-stage Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) extraction protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine trace analytes (As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined in extracts obtained from the BCR sequential extraction procedure as well as from in vitro gastro-intestinal experiments. The results showed that high As, Pb, Zn and Cd concentrations were found in these soils. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis were used as classification techniques. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was applied to the data set to determine how the bioaccessibility of a metal is linked to the operationally defined fractions of metal speciation in soil. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This analysis showed that the metal concentrations in the intestinal and gastric extracts are mainly dependent on the concentrations found in BCR phases 1 and 2 for each metal ion except for Cr, which was mainly dependent on the concentrations found in BCR phase 3. From the chemometric technique of correlation analysis, it was concluded that the metals extracted using BCR phases 1 and 2 are more likely to be bioaccessible, i.e. are also extracted by gastric and intestinal digestion solutions. When the correlation and PCA results were interpreted together, it indicated that the bioaccessiblity of Zn, Pb, Mn and Cd were higher than As, Ba, Cr, Ni and Cu for these soils.
