Pharmaceutical antibiotics have recently become emerging environmental contaminants. To enhance the removal efficiency of antibiotics in water, hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) with designed porous patterns are used in both batch and column mode adsorption processes in this study, and the role of their nanoporous geometry in the adsorption dynamics are explored. THPC (HPC with trimodal pores) and DHPC (HPC with bimodal pores) exhibit remarkably superior adsorption performances to the selected antibiotics than those of commercial activated carbon (AC) with similar surface area, especially in column mode adsorption. The effective treatment volumes of the HPC-columns remain up to 8–10 times those of the AC-columns for the removal of tetracycline and 4–6 times for the removal of tylosin. The mass transfer rates of the carbon-based columns present the order of THPC > DHPC > AC. As comparison, the columns based on monomodal mesoporous carbon (MEC) and microporous carbon (MAC) exhibit low effective treatment volumes although their high mass transfer speed. The interconnected meso/macropores in HPCs benefit the intraparticle mass transfer of guest molecules and the accessibility of adsorption sites. The micropores linking to the meso/macropores not only provide adsorption sites but also facilitate adsorption affinity.

Pollutant emissions in ship exhaust have been continually increasing. SO₂ is one of the main gaseous pollutants in ship exhaust, resulting from the use of marine heavy fuel oil with high sulfur content. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the fuel sulfur content (FSC) to regulate ship exhaust emissions. Optical remote sensing methods, such as differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and ultraviolet (UV) camera techniques, are regarded as simple and effective remote monitoring methods. One common technique is to estimate the SO₂ concentration in a ship plume using its local optical characteristics and use this to calculate FSC. One drawback of this technique is that there are always errors in the estimations of the SO₂ concentration despite the continuous improvement of such estimations. Another drawback is that calculating FSC from SO₂ often requires additional measurement methods. Here, a sulfur content prediction model based on a deep convolutional neural network using a UV camera is introduced. First, a ship benchmark test is performed. In the test, a large number of ultraviolet characteristic images of the ship exhaust plume are taken with a UV camera and the corresponding FSC data are collected. Next, a visual geometry group (VGG)-16 convolutional neural network model based on transfer learning is built. The model extracts all the features of the exhaust plume image as input data to the deep neural network and outputs the predicted FSC as a classification label. The results show that the model can predict the FSC value with high accuracy corresponding to the exhaust plume image. This study proves that it is theoretically feasible to apply a convolutional neural network to learn features of ultraviolet ship exhaust plume images for FSC predictions, which can provide guidance for the remote regulation of ship exhaust emissions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants produced during incomplete combustion of organic matter and several industrial processes. Humans can be exposed to PAHs through ingestion of food, inhalation of tobacco smoke or polluted air, and dermal contact, causing immunologic, developmental, and reproductive problems. In the present research, eleven metabolites of PAHs were analyzed in the urine of 110 lactating women living in Spain (2015). PAH metabolites were extracted from the urine samples by liquid-liquid extraction and their determination was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. In addition, information on lifestyle and dietary habits of the participants was collected using a questionnaire. All the PAH metabolites were detected in more than 70% of the samples, except for 3-hydroxybenzo(a)pyrene which was detected in less than 1% of the samples. The highest urinary levels were found for naphthalene metabolites, with geometric means of 0.8 (1-hydroxynaphthalene) and 7.1 ng ml⁻¹ (2-hydroxynaphthalene). The statistical analysis showed that smoking status, as well as the ingestion of certain food groups (vegetables, cereals, oils and fats, smoked fish and coffee), were the main influencing factors of exposure to PAHs.The estimated daily intake (EDI) was calculated for naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, ranging from 6 to 1522 ng kg⁻¹·day⁻¹. The non-cancer risk associated to PAH exposure was estimated, showing hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard indexes (HIs) below 1. Therefore, it did not reveal a significant health risk for Spanish women due to PAH exposure.

Chinese children have been exposed to high level of lead due to polluted air, dust, contaminated foods and water, etc. In this research, we investigated published blood lead levels (BLLs) reflecting 1,057,832 Chinese children aged at 0–12 and teenagers aged at 13–18 in the past 30 years (1991–2020). The data mining and estimation were performed innovatively by Monte Carlo simulation to remedy the skewed distribution-induced bias. The temporal trend of Chinese children’s BLLs showed an obvious decrease in the past decades from 88.74 μg/L (Geometric SD = 4.09) during 1991–1995 to 27.32 μg/L (Geometric SD = 4.18) during 2016–2020. This study also indicated that children’s BLLs of Yunnan, Guizhou, Shanxi were at relatively high levels and most provinces showed a downward trend. Chinese boys aged at 1–18 years old had higher BLLs (GM: 44.03 μg/L) compared to girls (GM: 41.32 μg/L) (p < 0.001). At different age groups, Chinese children’s BLLs were 42.04 μg/L (1–3 years old), 52.88 μg/L (4–6 years old), 50.49 μg/L (7 and above years old), respectively. Although the BLLs of Chinese children exhibited a continuous declined trend in the past 30 years, it was still higher than that in developed countries, which indicated that more efforts are needed in children’s BLLs control.

Soil contamination in urban environment by trace metals is of public concerns. For better risk assessment, it is important to determine their background concentrations in urban soils. For this study, we determined the background concentrations of 9 trace metals including As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in 214 urban soils in Florida from two large cities (Orlando and Tampa) and 4 small cities (Clay County, Ocala, Pensacola and West Palm Beach). The objectives were to determine: 1) total concentrations of trace metals in urban soils in cities of different size; 2) compare background concentrations to Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs); and 3) determine their distribution and variability in urban soils via multivariate statistical analysis. Elemental concentrations in urban soils were variable, with Pb being the highest in 5 cities (165–552 mg kg⁻¹) and Zn being the highest concentration in Tampa (1,000 mg kg⁻¹). Besides, the As and Pb concentrations in some soils exceeded the FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹ As and 400 mg kg⁻¹ Pb. Among the cities, Clay County and Orlando had the lowest concentrations for most elements, with Cd, Co, and As being the lowest while Ba, Pb and Zn being the highest. Among all values, geometric means were the lowest while 95th percentile was the highest for all metals. Most 95th percentile values were 2–3 folds higher than the GM data, with Pb presenting the greatest difference, being 4 times greater than GM value (58.9 vs. 13.6 mg kg⁻¹). Still they were lower than FSCTL, with As exceeding FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹. In addition, the linear discriminate analysis showed distinct separation among the cities: Ocala (Ba & Ni) and Pensacola (As & Pb) were distinctly different from each other and from other cities with higher metal concentrations. The large variations among elemental concentrations showed the importance to establish proper background concentrations of trace metals in urban soils.

Jain, Ram B.
Data (N = 10336) from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2003–2016 for US adults aged ≥ 20 years were analyzed to evaluate the concentrations of blood and urine cadmium across the various stages of glomerular function. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) > 90 mL/min/1.73 m2 was defined to be glomerular function stage 1 (GF-1), eGFR between 60 and 90 mL/min/1.73 m2 defined as GF-2, eGFR between 45 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 as GF-3A, and eGFR between 15 and 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 as GF-3B/4. Regression models stratified by GF-stages were fitted to estimate associations between the observed levels of blood and urine cadmium across stages of GF. Based on the results of stratified modes, there were consistent increases in adjusted geometric means (AGMSM) for both blood and urine cadmium from GF-1 to GF-3A although increases were not uniform from one GF stage to another. For the total population, AGMSM for blood and urine cadmium were GF-1 (0.47, 0.24), GF-2 (0.60, 0.37), GF-3A (0.72, 0.45), and GF-3B/4 (0.73, 0.45) μg/L. respectively. Although females had higher AGMSMs than males for both blood and urine cadmium, the difference in blood cadmium narrowed as kidney function deteriorated. Smokers had the steepest increases in AGMSMs for blood and urine cadmium across the stages of glomerular function and smoker-nonsmoker differences for blood cadmium narrowed as kidney function deteriorated but smoker-nonsmoker differences for urine cadmium widened as kidney function deteriorated. The important physiologic messages are that both blood and urine cadmium cease to increase from GF-3A to GF-3B/4, suggesting a new steady state based on renal failure. And, the narrowed difference in blood cadmium in smokers vs. nonsmokers suggests why this happens. Incremental exposures to cadmium are offset by excretion as renal failure progresses.

Incineration has overtaken landfilling as the most important option for disposal of the increasing volumes of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in China. Accordingly, disposal of the incineration fly ash, which is enriched with a range of heavy metals, has become a key challenge for the industry. This review analyzes the temporal and spatial trends in the distributions of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg in MSW incineration fly ash between 2003 and 2017, and estimates the inventories of heavy metals associated with the fly ash and the average levels of heavy metals in Chinese MSW based on their mass flow during MSW incineration. It was estimated that MSW incinerators in China released approximately 1.12 × 10², 2.96 × 10³, 1.82 × 10², 3.64 × 10⁴, 1.00 × 10², 7.32 × 10³, 2.42 × 10², and 1.47 × 10¹ tonnes of Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, As, and Hg, respectively, with the fly ash in 2016. Due to the much greater fly ash generation rate, the incinerators based on circulating fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) technology released more heavy metals during incineration of MSW compared to those based on grate furnace combustor (GFC) technology. Results of mass-flow modeling indicate that the geometric mean contents of Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, As, and Hg in Chinese MSW were 3.0, 109, 101, 877, 34, 241, 21, and 1.7 mg/kg, respectively, which are comparable to those in the MSW from other countries. To protect the environment from the significant potential ecological risk posed by heavy metals in the mismanaged fly ash, strict regulation enforcement and compliance monitoring are necessary to reduce the heavy metal pollution brought by improper disposal of MSW incineration fly ash, and more research and development efforts on advanced technologies for stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash and its environmentally sound reuse can help mitigate its environmental risk.

Little information is available about the occurrence of neonicotinoid insecticides in surface water and sediment of the metropolitan regions around the rivers in China. Here we investigate the residual level of neonicotinoids in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River. At least one or two neonicotinoids was detected in each surface water and sediment, and the total amount of neonicotinoids (∑₅neonics) in surface water ranged from 92.6 to 321 ng/L with a geometric mean (GM) of 174 ng/L. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and acetamiprid were three frequently detected neonicotinoids (100%) from surface water. As for the sediment, total concentration was varied between 0.40 and 2.59 ng/g dw with a GM of 1.12 ng/g dw, and acetamiprid and thiacloprid were the common sediment neonicotinoids. Western and Front river-route of the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River suffered a higher neonicotinoids contamination than the Rear river-route, resulting from more effluents of WWTPs receiving, and intensive commercial and human activities. Level of residual neonicotinoids in surface water was significantly correlated with the water quality (p < 0.01), especially items of pH, DO and ORP, and nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants. Compared with reports about residual neonicotinoids in water and sediment previously, the metropolitan regions of the Guangzhou could be confronted with a moderate contamination and showed serious ecological threats (even heavier than the Pearl Rivers). Our results will provide valuable data for understanding of neonicotinoids contamination in the Pearl River Delta and be helpful for further assessing environmental risk of neonicotinoids.

Acrylonitrile is a colorless volatile liquid mostly present in tobacco smoke. Acrylonitrile exposure has shown to increase oxidative stress in animal studies; however, there was no previous research in human epidemiology. In this study, 853 subjects were recruited from a cohort of Taiwanese adolescents and young adults to investigate the association between urinary concentrations of the acrylonitrile metabolite N-acetyl-S-(2-cyanoethyl)-L-cysteine (CEMA), the oxidative stress product 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The geometric mean (SD) of CEMA and 8-OHdG concentrations were 4.67 (8.61) μg/L and 2.97 (2.14) μg/L, respectively. 10% elevated in CEMA (μg/L) was positively correlated with the change of 8-OHdG levels (μg/L) (β = 0.325, SE = 0.105, P = 0.002) in multiple linear regression analyses. The urinary CEMA was not related to other CVD risk factors. In subpopulation analyses, the association between CEMA and 8-OHdG was evident in all genders, adolescents, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance score ≥0.89, and environmental tobacco smokers. In this study, we observed that higher levels of CEMA levels were correlated with increased levels of 8-OHdG in this cohort. Future research on exposure to acrylonitrile and oxidative stress was warranted.

Thallium (Tl) is a well-recognized hazardous toxic heavy metal that has been reported to have embryotoxicity and fetotoxicity. However, little is known about its association with preterm birth (PTB) in humans. We aimed to evaluate the predictors of Tl exposure and assessed its relation with PTB. The study population included 7173 mother-infant pairs from a birth cohort in Wuhan, China. Predictors of Tl concentrations were explored using linear regression analyses, and associations of Tl exposure with risk of PTB or gestational age at birth were estimated using logistic regression or generalized linear models. The geometric mean and median values of urinary Tl concentrations were 0.28 μg/L (0.55 μg/g creatinine) and 0.29 μg/L (0.53 μg/g creatinine). We found that maternal urinary Tl concentrations varied by gestational weight gain, educational attainment, multivitamin and iron supplementations. Women with Tl concentrations higher than 0.80 μg/g creatinine were at higher risk of giving birth prematurely versus those with Tl concentrations lower than 0.36 μg/g creatinine [adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval (CI)): 1.55 (1.05, 2.27)], and the association was more pronounced in PTB with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) rather than in PTB without PROM. About 3-fold increase in creatinine-corrected Tl concentrations were associated with 0.99-day decrease in gestational length (95% CI: −1.36, −0.63). This is the first report on the associations between maternal Tl exposure and the risk of PTB.
