Highly effective adsorption of antibiotics from water by hierarchically porous carbon: Effect of nanoporous geometry
2021
Xu, Liheng | Zhang, Mengxue | Wang, Yuanyu | Wei, Fang
Pharmaceutical antibiotics have recently become emerging environmental contaminants. To enhance the removal efficiency of antibiotics in water, hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) with designed porous patterns are used in both batch and column mode adsorption processes in this study, and the role of their nanoporous geometry in the adsorption dynamics are explored. THPC (HPC with trimodal pores) and DHPC (HPC with bimodal pores) exhibit remarkably superior adsorption performances to the selected antibiotics than those of commercial activated carbon (AC) with similar surface area, especially in column mode adsorption. The effective treatment volumes of the HPC-columns remain up to 8–10 times those of the AC-columns for the removal of tetracycline and 4–6 times for the removal of tylosin. The mass transfer rates of the carbon-based columns present the order of THPC > DHPC > AC. As comparison, the columns based on monomodal mesoporous carbon (MEC) and microporous carbon (MAC) exhibit low effective treatment volumes although their high mass transfer speed. The interconnected meso/macropores in HPCs benefit the intraparticle mass transfer of guest molecules and the accessibility of adsorption sites. The micropores linking to the meso/macropores not only provide adsorption sites but also facilitate adsorption affinity.

Soil contamination in urban environment by trace metals is of public concerns. For better risk assessment, it is important to determine their background concentrations in urban soils. For this study, we determined the background concentrations of 9 trace metals including As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in 214 urban soils in Florida from two large cities (Orlando and Tampa) and 4 small cities (Clay County, Ocala, Pensacola and West Palm Beach). The objectives were to determine: 1) total concentrations of trace metals in urban soils in cities of different size; 2) compare background concentrations to Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs); and 3) determine their distribution and variability in urban soils via multivariate statistical analysis. Elemental concentrations in urban soils were variable, with Pb being the highest in 5 cities (165–552 mg kg⁻¹) and Zn being the highest concentration in Tampa (1,000 mg kg⁻¹). Besides, the As and Pb concentrations in some soils exceeded the FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹ As and 400 mg kg⁻¹ Pb. Among the cities, Clay County and Orlando had the lowest concentrations for most elements, with Cd, Co, and As being the lowest while Ba, Pb and Zn being the highest. Among all values, geometric means were the lowest while 95th percentile was the highest for all metals. Most 95th percentile values were 2–3 folds higher than the GM data, with Pb presenting the greatest difference, being 4 times greater than GM value (58.9 vs. 13.6 mg kg⁻¹). Still they were lower than FSCTL, with As exceeding FSCTL for residential sites at 2.1 mg kg⁻¹. In addition, the linear discriminate analysis showed distinct separation among the cities: Ocala (Ba & Ni) and Pensacola (As & Pb) were distinctly different from each other and from other cities with higher metal concentrations. The large variations among elemental concentrations showed the importance to establish proper background concentrations of trace metals in urban soils.

Madadi, Mohamad Reza | Akbarifard, Saeid | Qaderi, Kourosh
Transient storage model (TSM) is the most popular model for simulating solutes transport in natural streams. Accurate estimate of TSM parameters is essential in many hydraulic and environmental problems. In this study, an improved version of high-level Moth-Swarm Algorithm (IMSA) was used to predict the TSM parameters. First, the performance of the improved model was successfully assessed through several benchmark functions. Next, a series of 58 measured hydraulic and geometric datasets was used to validate the model. The data were divided into two series randomly, 38 datasets were selected for derivation and the remaining 20 datasets were used to verification. Then the results of IMSA were compared with other algorithms proposed by previous researchers. Two statistical indices of root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of correlation (CC) were employed to evaluate the performance of the model. The results showed that despite the high complexity and uncertainty associated with the dispersion processes, the IMSA algorithm could accurately predict the TSM parameters.

2020
We report on commuters’ exposure to black carbon (BC), PM₂.₅ and particle number (PN, with aerodynamic diameter, dₐ, in the range 0.01 <dₐ< 1.0 μm) collected on-board diesel- and biodiesel-fuelled buses of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system of the city of Curitiba, Brazil. Particulate concentrations measured at high sampling rates allowed the capture of fine gradients along the route and the comparison of in-cabin air pollution on buses of different technologies.Of all metrics, BC showed the largest discrepancies, with mean concentrations of 20.1 ± 20.0 μg m⁻³ and 3.9 ± 26.0 μg m⁻³ on diesel- and biodiesel-fuelled buses, respectively. Mean PM₂.₅ concentrations were similar (31.6 ± 28.5 μg m⁻³ and 29.0 ± 17.8 μg m⁻³), whilst mean PN concentrations were larger on the biodiesel buses (56,697 ± 26,800 # cm⁻³vs. 43,322 ± 32,243 # cm⁻³). The results are in line with studies on biodiesel emission factors that reported lower BC mass but more particles with smaller diameters. Our hypothesis is that different emission factors of diesel and biodiesel engines reflected in differences of in-cabin particulate concentrations. We found that the passenger exposure during the bus commutes was affected not only by the fuel used but also by the street geometry along the route, with segments with canyon configurations resulting in peak exposure to particulates. The results suggest that i) switching from diesel to biodiesel may help abate commuters’ exposure to BC particles on-board buses of the BRT system, whilst it would need to be complemented with after-treatment technologies to reduce emissions; ii) further reductions in exposure (to peaks in particular) could be achieved by changing bus routes to ones that avoid passing through narrow urban street canyons.

F–53B and PFOS are two per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) widely utilized in the metal plating industry as mist suppressants. Recent epidemiological studies have linked PFASs to cardiovascular diseases and alterations in heart geometry. However, we still have limited understanding of the effects of F–53B and PFOS on the developing heart. In this study, we employed a human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based cardiac differentiation system and whole transcriptomics analyses to evaluate the potential developmental cardiac toxicity of F–53B and PFOS. We utilized F–53B and PFOS concentrations of 0.1–60 μM, covering the levels detected in human blood samples. We demonstrated that both F–53B and PFOS inhibited cardiac differentiation and promoted epicardial specification via upregulation of the WNT signaling pathway. Most importantly, the effects of F–53B were more robust than those of PFOS. This was because F–53B treatment disrupted the expression of more genes and led to lower cardiac differentiation efficiency. These findings imply that F–53B may not be a safe replacement for PFOS.

Aluminum is a widely distributed metal that has been reported to have embryotoxicity and fetotoxicity in animal studies. However, there has been no study of the association between prenatal aluminum exposure and newborn mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn). We aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal aluminum exposure on newborn mtDNAcn. A total of 762 mother-newborn pairs were recruited between November 2013 and March 2015 in Wuhan city, China. We measured maternal urinary aluminum concentrations at three trimesters of pregnancy. Relative mtDNAcn was measured in DNA extracted from umbilical cord blood samples. We used generalized estimating equations to assess the relationship between prenatal aluminum exposure and newborn mtDNAcn. The geometric means of creatinine corrected aluminum concentrations were 31.0 μg/g Cr (95% CI: 27.6, 34.7), 40.9 μg/g Cr (95% CI: 35.7, 46.8) and 58.4 μg/g Cr (95% CI: 51.2, 67.4) for the first, second and third trimesters, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, a doubling of maternal urinary aluminum concentrations during the second and third trimesters was related to 3.16% (95% CI: 0.88, 5.49) and 4.20% (95% CI: 1.64, 6.81) increases in newborn mtDNAcn, respectively, while the association between maternal urinary aluminum concentration during the first trimester and newborn mtDNAcn was not significant (percent difference: 0.70%, 95% CI: −2.25, 3.73). Prenatal aluminum exposure during the second and third trimesters was positively associated with newborn mtDNAcn. Further studies are essential to elucidate on the potential health consequences of newborn mtDNAcn.

Little information is available about the occurrence of neonicotinoid insecticides in surface water and sediment of the metropolitan regions around the rivers in China. Here we investigate the residual level of neonicotinoids in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River. At least one or two neonicotinoids was detected in each surface water and sediment, and the total amount of neonicotinoids (∑₅neonics) in surface water ranged from 92.6 to 321 ng/L with a geometric mean (GM) of 174 ng/L. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and acetamiprid were three frequently detected neonicotinoids (100%) from surface water. As for the sediment, total concentration was varied between 0.40 and 2.59 ng/g dw with a GM of 1.12 ng/g dw, and acetamiprid and thiacloprid were the common sediment neonicotinoids. Western and Front river-route of the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River suffered a higher neonicotinoids contamination than the Rear river-route, resulting from more effluents of WWTPs receiving, and intensive commercial and human activities. Level of residual neonicotinoids in surface water was significantly correlated with the water quality (p < 0.01), especially items of pH, DO and ORP, and nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants. Compared with reports about residual neonicotinoids in water and sediment previously, the metropolitan regions of the Guangzhou could be confronted with a moderate contamination and showed serious ecological threats (even heavier than the Pearl Rivers). Our results will provide valuable data for understanding of neonicotinoids contamination in the Pearl River Delta and be helpful for further assessing environmental risk of neonicotinoids.

2019
Jain, Ram B.
Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2013–2016 were used to compare observed levels of cadmium, lead, and total mercury in blood among US residents aged ≥12 years who were users of cigars, cigarettes, cigars and cigarettes, e-cigarettes and dual users of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Total sample size available for analysis was 1139. Adjusted geometric means (AGM) among cigarette, cigar, e-cigarette, cigarette and cigar, and cigarette-e-cigarette users were comparable for blood cadmium lead, and total mercury. Cigar only users had lower AGM than cigar and cigarette users for total mercury (0.56 vs. 0.97 μg/L, p = 0.03). There is no evidence yet that can show concentrations of blood and urine cadmium, lead, and mercury among e-cigarette users are any different than among cigarette and/or dual users of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are environmentally persistent chemicals that structurally resemble legacy pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PBDEs were added to consumer products for over 30 years, before being phased out due to evidence of toxicity. We examined temporal changes in prenatal exposure to PBDEs, as well as other sources of variation. We measured PBDEs in umbilical cord plasma from 327 minority infants born in New York City between 1998 and 2006. We used linear regression to examine changes in concentrations over time and in relation to lifestyle characteristics collected during pregnancy. We detected BDE-47 in 80% of samples with a geometric mean concentration of 14.1 ng/g lipid. Ethnicity was the major determinant of PBDE exposure; African American infants had 58% higher geometric mean cord plasma concentrations of BDE-47 (p < 0.01) compared to Dominican infants. Notably, African American mothers were more likely to be born in the United States, which itself was associated with 40% (p < 0.01) higher concentrations. We observed small decreases in PBDE concentrations by date of birth and no difference before and after their phase-out in 2004. Final multivariable models explained 8–12% of variability in PBDE concentrations depending on the congener. Our finding that prenatal exposure to PBDEs decreased only modestly between 1998 and 2006 is consistent with the persistent properties of PBDEs and their ongoing release from existing consumer products.

Inorganic arsenic exposure may be associated with diabetes, but the evidence at low-moderate levels is not sufficient. Polymorphisms in diabetes-related genes have been involved in diabetes risk. We evaluated the association of inorganic arsenic exposure on diabetes in the Hortega Study, a representative sample of a general population from Valladolid, Spain. Total urine arsenic was measured in 1451 adults. Urine arsenic speciation was available in 295 randomly selected participants. To account for the confounding introduced by non-toxic seafood arsenicals, we designed a multiple imputation model to predict the missing arsenobetaine levels. The prevalence of diabetes was 8.3%. The geometric mean of total arsenic was 66.0 μg/g. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for diabetes comparing the highest with the lowest tertile of total arsenic were 1.76 (1.01, 3.09) and 2.14 (1.47, 3.11) before and after arsenobetaine adjustment, respectively. Polymorphisms in several genes including IL8RA, TXN, NR3C2, COX5A and GCLC showed suggestive differential associations of urine total arsenic with diabetes. The findings support the role of arsenic on diabetes and the importance of controlling for seafood arsenicals in populations with high seafood intake. Suggestive arsenic-gene interactions require confirmation in larger studies.
