Detecting the occurrence of indigenous and non-indigenous megafauna through fishermen knowledge: A complementary tool to coastal and port surveys

Marine bioinvasions and other rapid biodiversity changes require today integrating existing monitoring tools with other complementary detection strategies to provide a more efficient management. Here we explored the efficacy of fishermen observations and traditional port surveys to effectively track the occurrence of both indigenous and non-indigenous megafauna in the Adriatic Sea. This consisted mainly of mobile taxa such as fishes, crustaceans and molluscs. Port surveys using traps and nets within 10 major Adriatic harbours, were compared with the information obtained from 153 interviews with local fishermen. Information gathered by traps and nets varied significantly and generally resulted of limited efficacy in exotic species detection. Interviews allowed tracking the occurrence of new species through time and space, providing complementary knowledge at the low cost. This combined approach improves our capability of being informed on the arrival of species of different origin, providing a more rational, improved basis for environmental management and decision making.

The United Arab Emirates fisheries consist of highly diverse fish communities, and the most popular equipment used by fishermen to harvest them is a traditional baited basket fishing trap known locally as “gargoor”. Gargoors are dome-shaped traps made from galvanized steel; they have a circular supporting base and a funnel-like entrance. Unintended impacts of gargoors on marine fauna include bycatch of non-target species and, when lost, ghost fishing. However, there is very little information on sea turtle interaction with gargoors. In this paper we present two case reports from the eastern coast of the UAE of green sea turtle strandings associated with gargoor interactions. The first case report describes a turtle that was discovered trapped inside a lost or abandoned gargoor. The second case report describes another turtle that suffered from extensive perforation of the gastrointestinal tract resulting from the ingestion of 32 pieces of rusty gargoor fragments.

There is a paucity of data in the published literature on the ecological and economic impacts of derelict fishing traps (DFTs) in coastal ecosystems. We synthesized results from seven NOAA-funded trap fisheries studies around the United States and determined that DFT-caused losses to habitat and harvestable annual catch are pervasive, persistent, and largely preventable. Based on this synthesis, we identified key gaps to fill in order to better manage and prevent DFTs. We conclude with suggestions for developing a U.S. DFT management strategy including: (1) targeting studies to estimate mortality of fishery stocks, (2) assessing the economic impacts of DFTs on fisheries, (3) collaborating with the fishing industry to develop solutions to ghost fishing, and (4) examining the regional context and challenges resulting in DFTs to find effective policy solutions to manage, reduce, and prevent gear loss.

The present study aimed to develop monitoring methods for shallow water sessile and mobile epifauna with the main focus on enhancing the chance of early detection for new non-indigenous species (NIS) invasions. The field sampling was conducted between June and September in 2012, in the Archipelago Sea (Finland). The tested monitoring methods included baited traps that capture organisms and habitat collectors that provide habitat and refuges for organisms, as well as fouling plates. Catch efficiency of a trap/collector was defined as the number of NIS and all species caught, including their abundances. The American collector with oyster shells (habitat collector) caught the highest number of NIS, and their use is recommended in all places, where oyster shells are easily accessible. Sampling of all habitats of interest between 1 and 2 m depth is recommended with at least three habitat collectors per site.

Climate change with human direct pressures represent significant threats to the resilience of shoreline habitats like mangroves. A rapid, whole-of-system assessment strategy is needed to evaluate such threats, better linking innovative remote sensing with essential on-ground evaluations. Using the Shoreline Video Assessment Method, we surveyed around 190km of the mostly mangrove-fringed (78%) coastline of Kien Giang Province, Vietnam. The aim was to identify anthropogenic drivers of degradation, establishing baseline for specific rehabilitation and protection strategies. Fish traps occupy at least 87% of shoreline mangroves, around which there were abundant human activities – like fishing, crabbing, farming, plus collecting firewood and foliage. Such livelihoods were associated with remnant, fringing mangrove that were largely degraded and threatened by erosion retreat, herbivory, and excessive cutting. Our assessment quantified associated threats to shoreline stability, along with previous rehabilitation intervention measures. The method offers key opportunities for effective conservation and management of vulnerable shoreline habitats.

Derelict crab traps impact the coastal ecosystem through continued catch of target species and species of conservation, economic, or recreational importance. During volunteer-supported crab trap cleanups in 2012 and 2013, we quantified ghost fishing activity in derelict crab traps in coastal Louisiana through a citizen scientist program. Volunteers removed 3607 derelict traps during these events, and over 65% of traps analyzed by citizen scientists were actively ghost fishing. Additionally, volunteers identified 19 species enmeshed in derelict traps, including a combination of fresh and saltwater species. We also detected a significant difference in the number of blue crab in actively ghost fishing derelict traps across removal locations with estimated catches varying between 2.4 and 3.5 crabs/trap. Our instantaneous estimates of ghost fishing activity are greater than those previously thought in Louisiana, further justifying current derelict crab trap prevention and removal extension and outreach programs in Louisiana and throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Standardized measurement protocols are required to reduce ammonia (NH₃) emissions. In vitro measurement of NH₃ emissions consists in trapping the emission from an emitting source in an acidic solution under controlled conditions. The objective of this study was to assess the in vitro NH₃ measurement method from pig slurry with acid wet traps, as regards to the following: (i) the variation between replicates of NH₃ emissions measured in vitro, (ii) the relationships between partial and accumulated emissions, and (iii) the reduction of measurement frequency. For this study, a total of 60 pig slurry samples from different animal types (sows and growing animals) were collected from commercial farms. The coefficient of variation among replicates of accumulated NH₃ emission during 15 days was 6.73 %. Emissions tended to decrease with time, and an average reduction of NH₃ emissions about 16 % was found in the period 96–240 h with respect to the 0–96-h period. However, samples continued emitting considerable amounts of NH₃ after 360 h. Linear regression models allowed predicting emissions accumulated for 15 days using only the first 8 days (R ² > 0.90). Reducing NH₃ measurement frequency (from 24 to 48 h) did not significantly affect measured emissions (P > 0.05). The results of this study confirm that replication of measurements is required and a coefficient of variation of 10 % may be established as quality control requirement. The study also suggests that reducing the duration and frequency of measurements is a tangible option to simplify this methodology.

An ongoing project monitors saline dust transportation and accumulation in the Western Junggar Basin to determine the rate and chemical composition of dust inputs to soils and their impact on snow/ice melt and vegetation degradation of the surrounding areas. The 1-year record from ten dust trap sites in the Ebinur region of northwest China reveals that yearly deposition rates fluctuate strongly between different sampling sites. The mass accumulation rates (fluxes) of the dust, including water-soluble solutes and trace element, range from 79 to 381 g m−2 year−1. With increasing distance from the dry lake bed, dust deposition gradually decreases. The salinity of the dust ranges from about 43 to 185 g kg−1 and the mass-soluble salt fluxes range from 4 to 61 g m−2 year−1. The types of water-soluble salt are different at different sampling sites. In all samples, the major types of water-soluble salts in the dust are sulfates and chlorides. Sulfate and chloride are the major anions while sodium and calcium are the main cations, and nitrate was not found in any dust samples. Potentially toxic trace elements such as Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, As, Cu, and Ni are present in all samples, with high levels of Cr, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Ni. The dust is a chemical dust in that it consists of dense fine sulfates, chlorides and potentially toxic elements, and causes serious air pollution, resulting in soil salinization and vegetation degradation and accelerating snow/ice melt.

The goal of this project was to develop a method to measure the total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations in unsaturated soils. Existing methods did not allow for easy replication, were costly, and were more suited for other gases, such as CO2, that do not react with collection surfaces. To overcome these problems, we developed a method that simultaneously collects up to ten soil pore air samples. We used a single mass flow controller, one pump, and two banks of rotameters to draw soil air out of the ground at 25 smL min−1 onto gold-coated quartz traps. Analysis of the gold traps was performed with a Tekran 2500 CVAFS mercury detector. The system was field tested at the Piney Reservoir Ambient Air Monitoring Station in western Maryland. Our system was relatively precise and accurate. For example, replicate TGM concentrations differed by less than 25% and recovery of known amounts of mercury were greater than 95%. Field measurements showed that the maximum soil pore air TGM concentrations, between 3 and 4 ng m−3, occurred at the Oe–A soil horizon interface. At all other depths, the total mercury concentrations were lower than the ambient air concentrations of 1.8 ng m−3. We believe our new method can be used to precisely and accurately measure the TGM concentrations in unsaturated soils at multiple locations simultaneously.

The use of purge and trap gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique for the determination of methylmercury in biological and sediment samples was described. The GC-MS detection system was combined with the dithizone extraction method for biological samples and the distillation method for sediment samples to alleviate matrix interference problems. The method was validated by analysis of CRMs such as SRM 966 (human blood), BCR 463 (tuna fish), IAEA 407 (fish), ERM CC580 (estuarine sediment), and IAEA 405 (sediment). The performance of the purge and trap GC-MS method was also tested on field samples of freshwater fish and sediment. The results were compared with those of the GC-ECD and the GC-CVAFS, which were used widely for methylmercury analysis. Additionally, total mercury and methylmercury levels in freshwater fish and sediments from various reservoirs and streams in Korea were measured to understand mercury contamination status in Korean peninsula. Methylmercury concentrations in freshwater fish were found to correlate with body weight, diet habit, and food availability. In sediment, total mercury concentrations correlated with methylmercury concentrations and organic matter such as %C and %S. However, no significant relationships between methylmercury and sediment organic matter have been found.
