Genotype-environment interaction in Latvian Scots pine growth and quality traits and its impact on progeny testing

Progeny testing of Scots pine in Latvia is carried out in only few locations, however, material from selections via seed orchards is deployed in various climatic and soil conditions, therefore concerns arise for influence of genotype environment interaction on levels of genetic gain. Problem is addressed based on 3 open pollinated progeny tests, consisting of 80 open pollinated families, located in 3 distant climatic regions in Latvia. Test age is 27 years, therefore not only growth, but also branch quality traits can be reliably analyzed. Strong genetic correlation (rb=0.80-0.94) among sites for tree height and diameter was found, but considerably weaker for branch traits like diameter of thickest branch (rb=0.52-0.67), average branch diameter, and sum of branch diameters (rb=0.41-0.49). Coefficients of additive genetic variation and coefficients of phenotypic variation among family means, determining potential of improvement via breeding, can be inflated by up to half, based on single site estimates for growth traits and double for quality traits. Backward selection based on results of several trials, in contrast to forward selection or utilization of single experiment results, could lead to improvement of branch traits close to the same as for growth traits (height and diameter). Single site narrow-sense heritability estimates for analyzed growth and quality traits are up to twice as large as across site estimates, indicating possibilities of serious bias in genetic gain estimates based on results from one test site. Testing at 4-5 sites for further breeding work is recommended.

Black alder wood is suitable for production of high quality veneer and other uses, but doe to its small share in total forest area (3%) in Latvia its genetic improvement have not been a priority. Set of progeny tests, together 22.8 ha, have been established only in the last decade. First of them have reached the age of 8 to 10 years and are suitable for first assessment. Aim of our study was to evaluate potential of improvement of black alder using selection, based on progeny testing. Data from 4 open pollinated progeny tests of phenotypically selected black alder plus trees, located in central part of Latvia, each containing from 15 to 21 families, are evaluated, using breeding value as a criterion. Results reveal that selection of parent trees with the practically possible intensity (10%) yields notable improvement in height at the age of 8 to 10 years: from 10 to 32%. Parent trees of open-pollinated families S9, S14, S16 and 84115 that have superior productivity and above-average quality can be recommended for establishment of second-round seed orchard. Estimates of genetic parameter suggest that selection in black alder trials could be carried out with high accuracy and improvements are possible both in productivity and quality (branch thickness, stem straightness, occurrence of spike knots).

The aim of the present study was to estimate variance and covariance components and genetic parameters for birth, weaning and yearling weights. The data were collected from lambs who born in period from 2007 to 2010 years and located in 58 pure-bred sheep herds in Latvia. Records of 11310 lambs from 160 rams and 4180 ewes for birth and weaning weight and on 3194 lambs from 134 rams and 2058 ewes for yearling weight were used in this study. The total number of individual pedigree was 18932. The fixed effects in the model were sex and type of birth, birth year and month and age of dam, because all growth traits were significantly affected by these fixed effects (p is less than 0.01, p is less than 0.05). Genetic parameters for growth weights were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) procedure fitting three animal models including various combinations of maternal and herd effects. Based on the most appropriate fitted model which included additive genetic, maternal additive genetic and herd effect, direct heritability’s were estimated to be 0.26 ± 0.01, 0.29 ± 0.63, 0.29 ± 2.63, but maternal heritability’s 0.14 ± 0.00, 0.04 ± 0.19, 0.04 ± 0.94, respectively for birth, weaning and yearling weights. The results showed maternal and strong herd influence in this study, therefore inclusion of maternal and herd effects into the model for growth traits is necessary.

Genetic evaluation of dairy cattle for milk production based on 305-day lactation yields was compared to the evaluation based on the corresponding test day (TD) yields from the first lactation. The heritability estimates were 0.19, 0.13 and 0.15, respectively for milk yield, fat yield and protein yield, and these parameters are lower than the corresponding ones for the routine genetic evaluation with the lactation model in Latvia. The results of estimated breeding values (EBV) and relative breeding values (RBV) showed relatively high variance for all traits: higher for fat yield and lower for protein yield. The calculation of reliabilities showed that the use of test day model gives higher reliabilities of the estimated breeding values. The reliabilities are higher (about 2 - 4 %) for all traits using TD model on average for all animals and cows. For bulls group with calculated reliabilities of breeding values of at least 50 % for all traits, the measure of accuracy is higher with TD model from 7% for protein yield to 17% for fat yield. The ranking of the best Top 10 sires by TD model is similar to the lactation model. A total of 3 bulls for fat and protein yield are included in rankings of Top 10 both by TD and lactation models. TD yields could be used instead of 305-day yields for the genetic evaluation of dairy cattle. It helps to improve the accuracy of genetic evaluation and does not change ranking of the best sires drastically.
