In the present study to develop new use of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) wood using smoke heating technique, (1) manufacture of some smoke heating kilns was tried, (2) thereby effects of far infrared radiation on smoke heating of logs, ( 3 ) effects of smoke heating on wood qualities, (4) effects of smoke heating on quality of boxed heart square timbers, ( 5 ) rupture of pit membranes by smoke heating, and (6) improvement of liquid permeability, were investigated, The results obtained are as follows.
