Supplementation of fats, especially rapeseed oil, to cattle rations may decrease the NH3-N content of rumen liquor and increase the blood serum urea content. Large quantities of fats are toxic to cellulolytic micro-organisms which degrade protein. Moderate amounts of fat increase protein degradability in the rumen
