Park, S.J. (Chungnam National University, Daejeon, Republic of Korea), E-mail: parksj@cnu.ac.kr
A 7.1 kg, seven-year old, castrated male, Shih-Tzu with severe pruritus, chronic otitis externa and Malassezia infection was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. In local animal hospital, steroid therapy was used to treat uncontrollable pruritus, but the clinical signs were recurrent when steroid therapy was discontinued. On physical examination, generalized alopecia, erythema, papules, severe crust and diffuse lichenification were presented. Tape strip test of skin lesions revealed cocci and Malassezia infections. Based on the result of history, clinical signs and examination described above, canine atopic dermatitis with secondary superficial pyoderma and Malassezia dermatitis was diagnosed.

A 1.35 kg, three-year-old, female, Yorkshire terrier was referred to the veterinary medical teaching hospital of Chungnam National University with an alopecia, scale, polydipsia and polyuria. During hospitalization, the patient revealed swelling and pain of all four foot pads. The hematology indicated nonregenerative anemia. Blood serum chemistry revealed elevation of BUN, serum creatinine and phosphorus contents. Radiographs of feet revealed increased radiodensity in the soft tissue of the foot pad. In ultrasonographs of abdomen, kidneys showed diffusely echodense renal cortex with loss of the normal corticomedullary boundary.

This study was carried out to investigate the skeletal measurement of the sternum and ribs at 60-, 90-, 120-day-old fetuses and neonates of Korean native goats. The total length and width of the ossified part of the sternebrae and ribs were observed at 60-, 90-, 120-day-old fetuses and neonates. The ossification of the ribs from the 1st to the 8th rib was observed in 60-day-old fetuses, but not observed from the 9th to the last rib. In the 90-day-old fetuses, all ribs were observed having ossified parts. In the 60-day-old fetuses, all sternebrae were not observed having ossified parts.

The sacrum fused with ilium in a chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis) was observed. The sacrum consists of four sacral vertebrae which was fused each other. In the ventral part of the fused pelvis, on the left, there was a 20.19 mm gap at the dorsolateral part of the sacroiliac articular part which is in between the promontory and the cranial border of the first ventral sacral foramen. On the right, there was a 14.34 mm gap at the dorsal part of sacroiliac articulation. In the dorsal view of the fused pelvis, the wing of sacrum and the wing of ilium were fused tightly, so that the boundary of the two bones was not recognizable.

Cytogenetic and hematological analysis was performed in peripheral blood obtained from pigs bred in the high background radiation areas (HBRA) (Cheongwon-gun and Boeun-gun) and a control area. The frequencies of gamma-ray induced micronuclei (MN) in the cytokinesis-blocked (CB) lymphocytes at several doses were measured in three pigs. An estimated dose of radiation was calculated by a best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN formation from the swine lymphocytes exposed in vitro to radiation over the range from 0 mGy to 1,969 mGy.

This study was carried out to investigate the morphological development of the tongue in the 60-, 90- and 120-day-old fetuses and neonates of Korean native goats by light microscopy. In 60-day-old fetuses, the tongue tissues were differentiated into epithelium, lamina propria, and muscle layer. The primordia of filiform, conical, lentiform, fungiform, and vallate papillae appeared by this time, and rudiments of taste buds were observed in the epithelia of the primordia gustatory papillae. The dorsal lingual epithelia were PAS positive.

The nucleoside analogue gemcitabine (2', 2-difluorideoxycytide) is potential against a wide variety of solid tumors and considered to be one of the most active drugs in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, we investigated the signals of gemcitabine-induced apoptosis, especially in point of caspase pathway in A549. We exposed A549 cells to gemcitabine for dose/time dependent manner and the results showed that gemcitabine induced apoptotic cell death in a time/dose-dependent manner. We also treated to gemcitabine and Z-VAD-fmk as a pan-caspase inhibitor for 24 hours.

Jung, J.Y. (Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea), E-mail: wangza@snu.ac.kr
Immu-Forte composed of chitosan, β-glucan, manno-oligosaccharide and pangamic acid was evaluated for its effectiveness as a nonspedific immunostimulator in mice. The effects of Immu-Forte were determined by analysis of cytokines using ELISA and phenotype of leukocyte subpopulations using monoclonal antibodies specific to mouse leukocyte differentiation antigens and flow cytometry. All T cells, all B cells, CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, macrophages, IL-2, IL-4, IL-12 and IFN-r in Immu-Forte A-treated group increased in 1 months posttreatment and were significantly higher (p less than 0.05) than that of control at 1 months posttreatment.

2005
Yoon, B.I. (Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Republic of Korea), E-mail: byoon@kangwon.ac.kr
This study was performed to evaluate using wild-type (WT) and C×32 knockout (KO) mice if lack of cell to cell communication by connexin 32 gap junction enhances the benzene-induced hematotoxicity and hemopoietic tumor development. The WT and C×32 KO mice were exposed to 300 ppm of benzene for 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for a total of 26 weeks by inhalation, and then sacrificed to evaluate the toxicities of hemopoietic organs or allowed to live out their life span to evaluate the hemopoietic tumor incidence. The significant increase and decrease of organ weight were respectively noted in spleen and thymus of both WT and C×32 KO mice without significant difference between the genotypes.

The major protocol features of the rodent uterotrophic assay have been evaluated using a range of reference chemicals. The protocol variables considered include the selection of the test species and route of chemical administration, the age of the test animals, the maintenance diet used, and the specificity of the assay for estrogens. The rodents were ovarjectomized under general anesthesia via bilateral flank incisions and randomly assigned to groups of 5 animals. Chemicals were DEHP, DBP, BPA and NP, were injected sc once daily with combinations of chemicals treatments for 3 days.
