The use of 5-nitrofurane antimicrobial drugs have been prohibited in the European Union for all food producing animals since 1997 due to their known mutagenicity and genotoxicity. Nitrofurane-type antimicrobials are characterized by their rapid metabolism whose half-time expressed in hours.
