Functional food is a new concept in food industry and it is based on healthy qualities of foodstuffs. These qualities are enhanced by adding natural products to food (e.g. fibre products or lactic acid bacteria). Some of them are already contained in food and their content needs to be increased. Others are added if necessary. One group of possible admixtures to functional food is probiotics and prebiotics. The article contains the information from literature about this group of admixtures.
